Book excerpt: This book treats the subject of porous flow and its applications in three engineering and scientific problems. The first major part of the book is devoted to solute transport in unsaturated porous media. Dynamic hydraulic conductivity and degree of saturation associate with pore pressures are also included in the consolidation-induced solute transport process. The second part of this book focuses on tidal dynamics in coastal aquifers, including shallow water expansion for sloping beaches, two-dimensional problem in estuarine zone and leaky confined aquifers. The final part of the book summarizes the recent development of porous model in the field of liquefaction around marine infrastructures including fundamental mechanisms of momentary and residual seabed liquefaction, two-dimensional and three-dimensional porous models for fluid-seabed interactions around breakwaters, pipelines and piled foundations in marine environments. The authors’ aim is to describe in detail the applications of porous models for several engineering problems. This book will provide academic researchers and industry an overview of recent development in the field of porous models and the applications. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: FROM THE PREFACE Sanitary landfills are the most widely utilized method of solid waste disposal around the world. With increased use and public awareness of this method of disposal, there is much concern with respect to the pollution potential of the landfill leachate. Depending on the composition and extent of decomposition of the refuse and hydrological factors, the leachate may become highly contaminated. As leachate migrates away from a landfill, it may cause serious pollution to the groundwater aquifer as well as adjacent surface waters. There is growing concern about surface and groundwater pollution from leachate. Better understanding and prediction of leachate generation, containment, and treatment are needed. This book contains a literature review of various methodologies that have been developed for prediction, generation, characterization, containment, control, and treatment of leachate from sanitary landfills. The contents of this book are divided into nine chapters. Each chapter contains theory and definition of the important design parameters, literature review, example calculations, and references. Chapter 1 is devoted to basic facts of solid waste problems current status and future trends towards waste reduction and recycling. Chapter 2 provides a general overview of municipal solid waste generation, collection, transport, resource recovery and reuse, and disposal options. The current status of sanitary landfill design and operation, problems associated with the landfilling, and future trends are presented in Chapter 3. Methods of enhanced stabilization, recycling landfill space, methane recovery, and above grade landfilling, and closure and post closure care of completed landfills are also discussed in detail. Chapter 4 provides a general overview of Subtitle D regulations and its impact upon sanitary landfilling practices. Chapter 5 is devoted entirely to moisture routing and leachate generation mechanisms. Examples of calculation pr

Book excerpt: The biennial Water Resources Management conference is one of the most important of several water-related conferences organised by the Wessex Institute of Technology. As water becomes an increasingly precious resource, communities all over the world Are under extreme pressure to ensure its continued adequate supply to their populations. It is therefore essential that those responsible for managing water resources share their expertise in dealing with issues of water quality, quantity, management and planning, as well as other related concerns that help or hinder sustainable management of this vital resource. In this volume, containing research on recent technological and scientific developments associated with the management of surface and sub-surface water presented at the Sixth International Conference on Water Resources Management, they do just that. The research covers: Water management and planning; Waste water treatment, management, and re-use; Markets, policies and contracts; The right to water; Urban water management; Water quality; Pollution control; Irrigation problems; River basin management; Hydraulic engineering and Hydrological modelling; Flood risk; Decision support systems; Remediation and renaturalisation; Climate change and water resources; Governance and monitoring; Regional and geo-politics of water; Economics; Water ecology; Sanitation; Wetlands; and Extreme events.
