La maison de campagne, connue des anciens Romains, s’épanouit avec la villegiatura de la Renaissance italienne, à travers les siècles jusqu’à l’actuelle résidence secondaire . Les XVIIIe et XIXe siècles ajoutèrent les saisons et stations estivales de villégiature, thermales, montagnardes, balnéaires océaniques puis méditerranées, après 1925. L’hiver dans le Midi , inventé après 1763, fut, jusqu’à son rapide déclin (en 1930) la plus longue saison de villégiature (d’octobre à avril) ; une nouvelle mode la supplanta : les glisses sur la neige. D’autres formes apparaissent comme la villégiature du soleil . Demeure l’essentiel : la villégiature, hier et plus encore aujourd’hui, est un grand marché économique, un espace d’aménagement. Les stations de villégiature assurent l’animation des saisons, la sédentarité oisive, exprime la quête de la distinction, le désir de contact avec la Nature. La sphère du tourisme n’est donc pas seulement celle du voyage et de la découverte, mais aussi celle de l’enracinement, de la jouissance ou du retour nostalgique.
