Book Synopsis Exaltation of the Cross by : Louis van Tongeren
Download or read book Exaltation of the Cross written by Louis van Tongeren and published by Peeters Publishers. This book was released on 2000 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The origin, development and spread of the feast of the Exaltation of the Cross is traced on the basis of liturgical sources, and through a careful examination of the liturgical textual material, the meaning of the feast is analyzed with respect to its content. Among the important points receiving attention in this analysis are the place, function and significance of the Cross relic, and the theology of the Cross, or the process whereby the understanding of the Cross was shaped, as that was invested in the feast. The research is based on sources of Western liturgy from the early Middle Ages, and therefore has bearing on the period in the West in which a multiform liturgy, celebrated according to various indigenous local and regional traditions, gradually made way for one uniform Latin liturgy patterned on Roman models. The feast of the Exaltation of the Cross spread through the West from Rome within this context of standardization and Romanization. This raises questions about the uniformity and the Roman content of the feast. This study especially examines to what degree indigenous interpretations of the Cross, which were part of the legacy of the Hispanic and Gallican traditions in particular, continued to be preserved through the liturgical books of the early Middle Ages.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The final volume in the Handbook for Liturgical Studies series, Volume V: Liturgical Time and Space contains the concluding material for an integral study of the liturgy. It opens with a preliminary notion of time and space, before discussing in detail three types of liturgical celebrations on which time and space have a direct and particular bearing. The first of these is the Liturgy of the Hours. This topic is developed in the light of the early Christian tradition until the fourth century and its subsequent forms in both East and West. The second is the Liturgical Year, traditionally called the anni circulas. The development of the Liturgical Year during the first four centuries is reviewed. This is followed by adetaled study of the Byzantine, Roman, and non-Roman Western tradition. It concludes with the theology and spirituality of the Liturgical Year wherein the mystery of Christ as a saving event is made present in time, so that the faithful may lay hold of it through the Word and the sacraments. The theology of liturgical space is drawn from the mutual interaction between the assembled community, which gives meaning to the place of assembly, and the place itself, which upholds and signifies community. Book excerpt: From 11 to 16 August 2003, the nineteenth international congress of the Societas Liturgica was held in Veldhoven (the Netherlands), with as its theme A cloud of witnesses. Saints and role models in Christian liturgy. The present publication contains a collection of nineteen case studies reflecting the versatility of the congress in its variations and themes, its scope in time (from early Christian times to the present day), and the fact that many churches and religious communities as well as the Jewish tradition are represented. The collection contains a number of articles that reflect on subjects like the phenomenon of saintliness, heortology, the dimensions of time and space in ritual-liturgical practice, and saints and canonizations in the present-day Roman Catholic and Protestant church. The last section consists of contributions on saints and forms of saint's cult by a number of authors, based on their own religious communities, such as the Old Catholic Church, Anglican Church, Dissenting Free Church, Reformed Church and ecumenical movement. The editors of this collection have by way of an introduction compiled a historiographic-bibliographic overview relating to saints and their cults in various research domains, specifically within liturgical studies, also touching upon certain specific, and for this collection interesting, themes such as the position of the (cult of) saints in cultural and historical studies, Protestant traditions, and the Feminist Liturgical Movement.
