Book Synopsis Poetics and Politics of Shame in Postcolonial Literature by : David Attwell
Download or read book Poetics and Politics of Shame in Postcolonial Literature written by David Attwell and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-05-07 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poetics and Politics of Shame in Postcolonial Literature provides a new and wide-ranging appraisal of shame in colonial and postcolonial literature in English. Bringing together young and established voices in postcolonial studies, these essays tackle shame and racism, shame and agency, shame and ethical recognition, the problem of shamelessness, the shame of willed forgetfulness. Linked by a common thread of reflections on shame and literary writing, the essays consider specifically whether the aesthetic and ethical capacities of literature enable a measure of stability or recuperation in the presence of shame’s destructive potential. The obscenity of the in-human, both in the colonial setting and in aftermaths that show little sign of abating, entails the acute significance of shame as a subject for continuing and urgent critical attention.
Book Synopsis Marxism and National Identity by : Robert Stuart
Download or read book Marxism and National Identity written by Robert Stuart and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2006-06-01 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Post-Marxists argue that nationalism is the black hole into which Marxism has collapsed at today's "end of history." Robert Stuart analyzes the origins of this implosion, revealing a shattering collision between Marxist socialism and national identity in France at the close of the nineteenth century. During the time of the Boulanger crisis and the Dreyfus affair, nationalist mobs roamed the streets chanting "France for the French!" while socialist militants marshaled proletarians for world revolution. This is the first study to focus on those militants as they struggled to reconcile Marxism's two national agendas: the cosmopolitan conviction that "workingmen have no country," on the one hand, and the patriotic assumption that the working class alone represents national authenticity, on the other. Anti-Semitism posed a particular problem for such socialists, not least because so many workers had succumbed to racist temptation. In analyzing the resultant encounter between France's anti-Semites and the Marxist Left, Stuart addresses the vexed issue of Marxism's involvement with political anti-Semitism.

Download or read book Sartre written by Christina Howells and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2009-10-29 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a comprehensive study of the writings of Jean-Paul Sartre. As well as examining the drama and the fiction, the book analyses the evolution of his philosophy, explores his concern with ethics, psychoanalysis, literary theory, biography and autobiography and includes a lengthy section on the still much-neglected study of Flaubert, L'Idiot de la famille. One important aim of the book is to rebut the charges made by many theorists and philosophers by revealing that Sartre is in fact a major source for concepts such as the decentred subject and detotalised truth and for the revolt against individualistic humanism. Dr Howells also takes into account much posthumously published material, in particular the Chaiers pour une morale, but also the Lettres au Castor and the Cranets de la drole de guerre. The work is a substantial contribution to Sartre studies, but has been written with the non-specialist in mind; to that end all quotations are translated into English and gathered in an appendix.
Book Synopsis Marxism, Christianity, and Islam by : Julian Roche
Download or read book Marxism, Christianity, and Islam written by Julian Roche and published by Academic Studies PRess. This book was released on 2024-02-20 with total page 393 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Roger Garaudy was for many years at the centre of the French Communist Party but was eventually expelled for his liberal views. In the Seventies, he strove to bring Marxism and Christianity together, to include all humanity in a project to set all people free. What emerges from Garaudy’s project is a very modern Marxism, with its emphasis on the individual, its ecological politics, and in its insistence on religion as central to human emancipation. Although Garaudy himself became frustrated by the failure of Marxism and converted to Islam, eventually resulting in his work being discredited in the West, it is certainly possible that Garaudy’s project represents a good, perhaps even the best, starting point for Marxism in today’s world.

Book Synopsis Marxism and the City by : Ira Katznelson
Download or read book Marxism and the City written by Ira Katznelson and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1992 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this work, Katznelson critically analyzes the development of Marxist scholarship on cities in the last quarter century. He demonstrates how some of the most important weaknesses in Marxism as a social theory can be remedied by forcing it to seriously engage with cities and spatial concerns, and explains the significant shortcomings even of this "improved" Marxism. Katznelson explores how a Marxism that is open to engagement with other social-theoretical traditions can help illuminate our understanding of cities and the patterns of class and group formation that have characterized urban life in the West.

Book Synopsis Contemporary Quebec by : Michael D. Behiels
Download or read book Contemporary Quebec written by Michael D. Behiels and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2011-11-30 with total page 809 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the last seventy years, Quebec has changed from a society dominated by the social edicts of the Catholic Church and the economic interests of anglophone business leaders to a more secular culture that frequently elects separatist political parties and has developed the most comprehensive welfare state in North America. In Contemporary Quebec, leading scholars raise provocative questions about the ways in which Quebec has been transformed since the Second World War and offer competing interpretations of the reasons for the province's quiet and radical revolutions.
