Book Synopsis Making and Breaking Mathematical Sense by : Roi Wagner
Download or read book Making and Breaking Mathematical Sense written by Roi Wagner and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2017-01-10 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In line with the emerging field of philosophy of mathematical practice, this book pushes the philosophy of mathematics away from questions about the reality and truth of mathematical entities and statements and toward a focus on what mathematicians actually do—and how that evolves and changes over time. How do new mathematical entities come to be? What internal, natural, cognitive, and social constraints shape mathematical cultures? How do mathematical signs form and reform their meanings? How can we model the cognitive processes at play in mathematical evolution? And how does mathematics tie together ideas, reality, and applications? Roi Wagner uniquely combines philosophical, historical, and cognitive studies to paint a fully rounded image of mathematics not as an absolute ideal but as a human endeavor that takes shape in specific social and institutional contexts. The book builds on ancient, medieval, and modern case studies to confront philosophical reconstructions and cutting-edge cognitive theories. It focuses on the contingent semiotic and interpretive dimensions of mathematical practice, rather than on mathematics' claim to universal or fundamental truths, in order to explore not only what mathematics is, but also what it could be. Along the way, Wagner challenges conventional views that mathematical signs represent fixed, ideal entities; that mathematical cognition is a rigid transfer of inferences between formal domains; and that mathematics’ exceptional consensus is due to the subject’s underlying reality. The result is a revisionist account of mathematical philosophy that will interest mathematicians, philosophers, and historians of science alike.
Book Synopsis Buddhism & Science by : B. Alan Wallace
Download or read book Buddhism & Science written by B. Alan Wallace and published by Motilal Banarsidass Publishe. This book was released on 2004 with total page 470 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reflecting its wide variety of topics, Buddhism and science is comprised of three sections. The first presents two historical overviews of the engagements between Buddhism and modern science or rather how Buddhism and modern science have definced, rivaled and complemented one another. The second describes the ways Buddhism and the cognitive sciences inform each other, the third address point of intersection between Buddhsim and the physical sciences. On the broadest level this work illuminates how different ways of exploring the nature of human identity the mind, and the universe at large can enrich and enlighten one another.
Book Synopsis Constituting Objectivity by : Michael Bitbol
Download or read book Constituting Objectivity written by Michael Bitbol and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-03-29 with total page 527 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, many philosophers of modern physics came to the conclusion that the problem of how objectivity is constituted (rather than merely given) can no longer be avoided, and therefore that a transcendental approach in the spirit of Kant is now philosophically relevant. The usual excuse for skipping this task is that the historical form given by Kant to transcendental epistemology has been challenged by Relativity and Quantum Physics. However, the true challenge is not to force modern physics into a rigidly construed static version of Kant’s philosophy, but to provide Kant’s method with flexibility and generality. In this book, the top specialists of the field pin down the methodological core of transcendental epistemology that must be used in order to throw light on the foundations of modern physics. First, the basic tools Kant used for his transcendental reading of Newtonian Mechanics are examined, and then early transcendental approaches of Relativistic and Quantum Physics are revisited. Transcendental procedures are also applied to contemporary physics, and this renewed transcendental interpretation is finally compared with structural realism and constructive empiricism. The book will be of interest to scientists, historians and philosophers who are involved in the foundational problems of modern physics.

Book Synopsis Le principe de la méthode infinitésimale et son histoire by : Hermann Cohen
Download or read book Le principe de la méthode infinitésimale et son histoire written by Hermann Cohen and published by Vrin. This book was released on 1999 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Synopsis G.W. Leibniz, Interrelations between Mathematics and Philosophy by : Norma B. Goethe
Download or read book G.W. Leibniz, Interrelations between Mathematics and Philosophy written by Norma B. Goethe and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-04-20 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Up to now there have been scarcely any publications on Leibniz dedicated to investigating the interrelations between philosophy and mathematics in his thought. In part this is due to the previously restricted textual basis of editions such as those produced by Gerhardt. Through recent volumes of the scientific letters and mathematical papers series of the Academy Edition scholars have obtained a much richer textual basis on which to conduct their studies - material which allows readers to see interconnections between his philosophical and mathematical ideas which have not previously been manifested. The present book draws extensively from this recently published material. The contributors are among the best in their fields. Their commissioned papers cover thematically salient aspects of the various ways in which philosophy and mathematics informed each other in Leibniz's thought.
