Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "As a foreign Prince, however, and a Bonaparte, there was never any hope that he might serve in the British army, but when the Anglo-Zulu War broke out in 1879 he was allowed to go to Africa as an observer, attached to General Lord Chelmsford's staff. The war seemed to offer him the perfect chance for military experience without European political repercussions, and with a minimum of danger. This was not to be."--BOOK JACKET.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux (1827-1875) was an extraordinarily gifted sculptor, the greatest in 19th-century France before Rodin, and embodied the emotionally charged artistic climate of his era ... Carpeaux's wrenching representations of human forms, shown in beautiful color details and illustrations, echo his turbulent personal life, fraught with episodes of violence and fatal illness. The book covers the entire span of Carpeaux's career, and includes the masterpiece Ugolino and His Sons, newly discovered drawings, and a number of rarely seen or studied works. Previously unpublished letters between Carpeaux and his family and friends, a wealth of archival material, and the most detailed chronology of the artist's life ever published."--Yale University Press website.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The nineteenth century is notable for its newly proclaimed emperors, from Franz I of Austria and Napoleon I in 1804 through Agustin and Pedro, the emperors of Mexico and Brazil in 1822 to Victoria, empress of India in 1876. Monarchs such as Napoleon III, Maximilian of Mexico, and Wilhelm Iprojected an imperial aura with coronations, courts, medals, costumes, portraits, monuments, international exhibitions, festivals, architecture, and town planning. They relied on ancient history for legitimacy whilst partially espousing modernity. Projecting Imperial Power is the first book toconsider newly proclaimed emperors in six territories across three continents across the whole range of the nineteenth century. The first emperors' successors - Pedro II of Brazil, Franz Joseph of Austria, and Wilhelm II of Germany - expanded their panoply of power, until Pedro was forced to abdicate in 1889 and World War I brought the Austrian and German empires to an end. Britain invented an imperial myth for its Indianempire in the 20th century, until George VI relinquished the title of emperor in 1947. The imperial cities of Berlin, Paris, Vienna, and New Delhi bear witness to vanished empires.Using a wide range of source Projecting Imperial Power explains the imperial ambition behind these imperial cities. It discusses how the empires and their rulers are remembered today by examining how the imperial statues that were erected in huge numbers in the second part of the period are treatedtoday, and how this demonstrates the contested place of emperors in national cultural memory.

Book Synopsis F'Queen N' H'Empire by : Basil Riccomini
Download or read book F'Queen N' H'Empire written by Basil Riccomini and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2004 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book was not planned it just happened. When it occurred to me that I could write a poem describing the charge of the 24th Regiment of Foot of Chilianwala, just how was I to do it? I decided to write it as being related by a soldier who had participated int he charge against the Sikh guns. He speaks in the 'lingo' of some of the soldiers of my acquantance during my colour service in the British Army. I wrote the other poems in a similar style, with the exception of the recruiting serjeant in The Queen's Shilling, who speaks with the 'Midlands' dialect. During Queen Victoria's long sixty-four year reign, there were constant military expeditions, campaigns and conflicts. Many caused the expansion of the empire, and many as result of that expansion. By European standards Great Britain had a very small standing army, but The Royal Navy was the world's largest. Britannia ruled the waves. Rather like the Roman legionaryies, the 'Tommies' of the period were professional and reliable. On many occasions they defeated the enemy although heavily outnumbered. Perhaps that explains why a relatively small regular army was so successful.
