Qatar University chose to support the growing academic interest and research in the field by hosting the Association Internationale de Dialectologie Arabe (AIDA) conference in 2013. The AIDA10 conference and the tenth volume of AIDA proceedings show that a good deal of change and development in the field is occurring. Fewer papers deal on hitherto unknown dialects as the white spots on the map of Arabic dialects have significantly shrunk. More papers focus on syntactical issues because we now possess more and larger text collections. Papers using "change" in their titles indicate that Arabic dialectology has a long history. The time has come to re-examine the studies of the 1940s, 50s, and 60s concerning the dialects of certain regions. This book includes twenty one essays with six written in French. Most of them deal with Arabic medieval grammatical thought and terminology and are based on the oldest grammatical treatises known to us, especially Sibawayhi's al-Kitab. The study of these two topics is interrelated, since the understanding of Arabic grammatical thought depends on the understanding of its terminology and vice versa. During the nineteenth and the twentieth centuries, some prominent scholars maintained that the linguistic data supplied by the early Arab grammarians are unreliable, and, as a result, their grammatical rules do not accord with the linguistic reality of Old Arabic. Professor Levin's studies concerning the history of Arabic language contribute to the refutation of this view, showing that Sibawayhi's linguistic method was mainly descriptive and that the linguistic information furnished by him is authentic and reliable. Professor Levin also shows that Sibawayhi's accurate description of Old Arabic is based primarily on the ordinary speech of certain Bedouin tribes who lived in Southern Iraq in the eighth century. The linguistic data found in the Ketab indicate that these Bedouins still spoke Old Arabic dialects. Aryeh Levin is Professor of Arabic at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. He is also the author of "A Grammar of the Arabic Dialect of Jerusalem" (in Hebrew).

Sezgin (GAS, IX). More than 40 were used in this book to contribute to a new understanding of the history of the text. She has now definitively shown that all of the recensions, oriental and occidental, follow closely the—now lost—copy of al-Mubarrad (d. 9th century), which functioned as a true vulgate. Only one manuscript, found in Milan, managed to escape its influence, and adhered to the rival Kufan grammatical tradition. This manuscript provides a better version of the text and makes a new reading of the Kitāb possible

Nigm's work portrays Eqypt as a society composed of contending social forces and it is concerned with the cause of liberating Egypt from class inequality and political oppression. For Nigm, the way to achieve such liberation is through a people's revolution that will ultimately pave the way for a new socialist society. Nigm's commitment to the causes of his society is enhanced by his use of the simple, yet evocative, colloquial, an idiom which is close to the mind and heart of Egypt's poor and illiterate people. Moreover, Nigm deftly utilises different folk poetic forms, folk idioms and pungent witticisms to convey his socialist message. Consequently, Nigm's poetry enjoys wide popularity in Egypt, especially when sung to the melodious tune of the 'ûd by Shaykh Imâm, Nigm's partner. Being an example of genuine popular expression, Nigm's protest appears to pose a challenge to the political establishment, which considers Nigm as a provocateur, as well as to the majority of scholars to whom vernacular works have no place in their canonical definition of "high" literature.

But the remembrance of the fall of the Berlin Wall coincided with another event of global importance that caught much less attention: the 250th anniversary of Napoleon Bonaparte’s birth. There is an undeniable historical and philosophical dimension to this coincidence. Napoleon’s appearance on the scene of world history seems to embody European universalism (soon thereafter in the form of a ‘modern’ imperial project); whilst scholars such as Francis Fukuyama saw in the events of 1989 its historical fulfilment. Today, we see more clearly that the fall of the Berlin Wall stands for an epistemic earthquake, which generated a world that can no longer be grasped through universal concepts. Here, we deal with the idea of Europe and of its relation to the world itself. Picking up on this contingency of world history with an ironic wink, the volume analyses in retrospect the epoch of European universalism. It focusses on its dialectics, polemically addressing and remembering both 1769 and 1989. L’année 2019 a été marquée par le 30e anniversaire de la réunification de l’Allemagne, éclipsant un autre événement d’envergure mondiale : le 250e anniversaire de Napoléon Bonaparte. La dimension philosophico-historique de cette coïncidence ne peut pourtant pas être négligée : si l’arrivée de Bonaparte sur la scène de l’histoire mondiale semble incarner l’avènement de l’universalisme européen (bientôt amené à prendre sa forme « moderne » et impériale), certains penseurs ont suggéré, avec Francis Fukuyama, que « 1989 » marquait son accomplissement historique.
