Book Synopsis Three Postwar Eras in Comparison by : C. Levy
Download or read book Three Postwar Eras in Comparison written by C. Levy and published by Springer. This book was released on 2001-12-14 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A brief glance at twentieth century European history would suggest that wars and their aftermath produced the major turning points in its development. Three times - in 1918, 1945 and again in 1989 - Europe was confronted with major questions of restructuring and rebuilding. But can we really divide Europe's development into neat postwar eras? Why was the period 1945-1989 so much more stable and prosperous than 1918-1939? Has the end of the cold war changed the basis of the post-1945 settlement? This comparative collection offers some unique insights into these questions.
Book Synopsis The Jewish Diaspora after 1945 by : S. Behnaz Hosseini

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For Jews across the Middle East and North Africa, the 1948 establishment of the State of Israel was a transformational period—in both the build-up to it and its aftermath. Using this momentous event as its focal point, this book takes the reader on a journey to remote destinations in the 20th century Jewish experience, examining aspects of Jewish history that have hardly ever been discussed in one place and in such an intriguing combination. Jews have played an integral role in the Arab world, Turkey, Iran, and North Africa for millennia. Their lives were intertwined with those of the majority non-Jewish communities among whom they dwelt: their mass expulsion and emigration after World War II ended the existence of a vital part of nearly all the societies in the region.
Author :Lucien Bianco Publisher :The Chinese University of Hong Kong Press ISBN 13 :9882370659 Total Pages :476 pages Book Rating :4.8/5 (823 download)
Download or read book Stalin and Mao written by Lucien Bianco and published by The Chinese University of Hong Kong Press. This book was released on 2018-03-15 with total page 476 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: China's ascent to the ranks of the world's second largest economic power has given its revolution a better image than that of its Russian counterpart. Yet the two have a great deal in common. Indeed, the Chinese revolution was a carbon copy of its predecessor, until Mao became aware, not so much of the failures of the Russian model, but of its inability to adapt to an overcrowded third-world country. Yet, instead of correcting that model, Mao decided to go further and faster in the same direction. The aftershock of an earthquake may be weaker, but the Great Leap Forward of 1958 in China was far more destructive than the Great Turn of 1929 in the Soviet Union. It was conceived with an idealistic end but failed to take all the possibilities into account. China's development only took off after--and thanks to--Mao's death, once the country turned its back on the revolution. Lucien Bianco's original comparative study highlights the similarities: the all-powerful bureaucracy; the over-exploitation of the peasantry, which triggered two of the worst famines of the 20th century; control over writers and artists; repression and labor camps. The comparison of Stalin and Mao that completes the picture, leads the author straight back to Lenin and he quotes the observation by a Chinese historian that, "If at all possible, it is best to avoid revolutions altogether."
Book Synopsis Preferential Trade Agreements and Cultural Products by : Gilbert Gagné
Download or read book Preferential Trade Agreements and Cultural Products written by Gilbert Gagné and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-09-06 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses the treatment of cultural products within international trade law, focusing on preferential trade agreements. Trade and culture intersect when cultural products are involved. These mainly encompass cinema, broadcasting, music, videos, and publishing, either in traditional or digital formats. As such products reflect the cultural identities of states, they have led to a debate as to whether, or the extent to which, they should be exempted from trade obligations. With multilateral negotiations in gridlock, states have increasingly turned to preferential trade agreements. Concurrently, digital technologies have revolutionized how cultural contents are created and distributed. The book analyzes the provisions relating to cultural products within trade agreements, as well as their relationship with the provisions and guidelines on cultural goods and services under the UNESCO Convention on Cultural Diversity. Drawing comparisons between states as to the treatment of cultural products in preferential trade agreements and considering the norms and provisions relating to cultural products under different regimes, the book offers a truly comprehensive overview of the evolution of the trade and culture debate. The book will be of interest to researchers in the fields of cultural products, trade agreements, digital technology, trade law, and cultural diversity.

Book Synopsis Literary Agents in the Transatlantic Book Trade by : Cécile Cottenet
Download or read book Literary Agents in the Transatlantic Book Trade written by Cécile Cottenet and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2017-04-07 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By way of a case study of one of the oldest French book agencies, Agence Hoffman, this book analyzes the role played by French literary agents in the importation of US fiction and literature into France in the years following World War II. It sheds light on the material conditions of the circulation of texts across the Atlantic between 1944 and 1955, exploring the fine mechanisms of agents’ negotiations which allowed texts, and ideas, to cross borders. While providing comparative insights into the history of publishing in France and in the United States in the immediate aftermath of the war, this book aims at foregrounding the role of the book agent, an all-too often neglected intermediary in the field of book history. Grounded in archival work conducted both in France and the United States, this study is based on previously unexamined correspondence. Considering the concept of mediation as central in the field of print culture, this book addresses the dearth of scholarship on literary agents on both sides of the Atlantic, and intersects with the current scholarship on transatlantic, internationalm and transnational cultural and trade networks, as evidenced by the recently emerged field of sociology of translation in Europe.
