One paper discusses studies on the nuclear and cytoplasmic growth of ten different strains of the genus Blepharisma, in which different types of nutrition at high and low temperatures alter the species to the extent that they became morphologically indistinguishable. The paper describes the onset of death at high and low temperatures as being preceded by a decrease in the size of the cytoplasm and a corresponding decrease in the size of the macronucleus. The moribund organisms, still possessing structure, are motionless with no distinguishable macronuclear materials. Another paper presents the response of meiotic and mitotic cells to azaguanine, chloramphenicol, ethionine, and 5-methyltryptophan. The paper describes the failure of spindle action, arrest of second division, inhibition of cytokinesis, aberrant wall synthesis, and alterations in chromosome morphology in meiosis cells. In the case of mitosis, a single enzyme—thymidine phosphorylase—shows that reagents which inhibit protein synthesis also inhibit the appearance of that enzyme if the reagent is applied one day before it normally appears. Other papers discuss control mechanisms for chromosome reproduction in the cell cycle, as well as the force of cleavage of the dividing sea urchin egg. The collection can prove valuable for bio-chemists, cellular biologists, micro-biologists, and developmental biologists.

Book excerpt: It is also possible that contractile vacuoles originate by some form of phase separation not yet understood and possibly involving the contractile properties of proteins, and' it is possible that this process continues to operate in the walls of the vacuoles or feeder canals. This secretory process may be the function of that part of the vacuolar apparatus which blackens on impregnation with osmic acid, and which seems to possess some degree of permanence from vacuole to vacuole and in some cases from parent to daughter cell. Remarkably little is known about the mechanism of systole. General body turgor may contribute, but it is not essential. In ciliates the main force is local and probably comes from a tension in the wall of the vacuole itself, but it is not known whether or not this is an active contraction of an oriented protein layer. The critical process for the initiation of systole is probably the opening of the pore. It is possible that in ciliates there is a rhythmically operating independent timing mechani,sm by which the vacuolar cycle is controlled, but its existence has not been demonstrated.

Obviously terms such as "poly nucleated" and "polyploid" arc inappropriate for protocaryotic cells.) The number of energids pCI' cell can be subject to variation as a response to certain environmental conditions 01' during certain phases of a developmental cycle. The absence in protocaryotic nuclear bodies of structural components other than DNA markedly affects their structure and morphology. Since the protocaryon essentially is an accumulation of DNA, the amount, mo lecular organization and chemical state of the DNA are basic determinants of nuclear shape and fine structure. Therefore, the organized DNA molecule (the genophor) must be considered the principal subject of any treatise dealing with nuclear cytology in bacteria and Cyanophyceae.
