It is dedicated to one of the main indicators of social change, fashion, analysed within various scientific fields, historical periods, and geographical areas. It offers a comprehensive and detailed analysis of the world of clothes, starting from a historical perspective, religious clothes, and traditional costumes, and then exploring fashion theories and more recent approaches and developments in the media and advertisements. The book analyses the clothing of various cultures, including the Hittite peoples and the less explored fashion of Eastern Europe, and it deals with craft traditions and national costume in different areas, including China, Greece, Romania and Georgia. It also investigates the style of marginalized groups and youth movements and the interpretation of fashion in the studies and writings of sociologists, philosophers and linguists, such as Fausto Squillace and Christian Garve.

The conference “Independent Albania and Italo-Albanian relations, 1912-2012” was held on 22nd November, 2012 at the Sapienza University of Rome, on the occasion of the hundredth anniversary of the declaration of the independence of Albania. Realized within the project PRIN 2009 “Empires and Nations in Europe from the 18th to the 20th century”, and thanks to the efforts of CEMAS (Research Center “Cooperation with Eurasia, the Mediterranean region and Sub-Saharan Africa”) and the Ph.D. in History of Europe, the conference was sponsored by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Albanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Albanian Embassy in Italy, the Historical Office of the Army General Staff and the State Central Archives in Tirana. Italian and Albanian scholars gave their own analyses of the main topics of the history of Albania and of the Italo-Albanian relations with the aim of providing for the scientific community and the public useful and valid tools for reflection and judgment. The common intention of the participants was to give, on the occasion of a very important anniversary for the Albanian State, their own contributions to the knowledge and understanding of the difficult history of the country that shares with Italy old and firm relations and multiple economic, political and cultural interests.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The war between Italy and the Ottoman Empire for possession of Cyrenaica and Tripolitania was a crucial event both for Italian domestic and foreign policy and for the contemporary European balance of power. For Italian society the Libyan conflict was in many ways a dress rehearsal for the First World War. The propaganda campaign for the occupation of Libya, orchestrated around the myth of the “Grande Italia” and the “Grande proletaria” had an important impact on the Italian political system, even more than the military operations, testing its stability and leading to violent debate not only between the parties, but also inside the parties themselves. The essays brought together in this book illustrate the attitude of the political forces that were the main supporters of the Italian intervention in Libya, and the international context in which the war between Italy and the Ottoman Empire came about. Using new sources or re-reading the sources already known with the insight gained from the passage of a hundred years, the authors reflect on a conflict that had profound repercussions for Italian and European politics and contributed to ending the Belle Époque, raising in the minds of both the Italian and European public the specter of a new war in Europe.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the enormous literature on the Muslim world, one of the few gaps in our knowledge is the status of Islam in inter-war Europe, an imbalance this book aims to address. The Muslim population of Europe in the period from 1918-1939 was not one of isolated islands of belief and practice. Rather, there was far more interaction between Muslim communities than had hitherto been imagined. For example, there was much correspondence and exchange of ideas between the Ahmadi-Lahori missions of Berlin and Woking, near London, and Albanian religious leaders. Other topics discussed in this book include the earlier than imagined emergence of notions of a distinctly 'European' Islam, the fraught interplay of politics and Islam, especially the development by some governments of Muslim 'agendas', the richness and importance of debates within Europe's Muslim community, the attempts by the Nazis to foment 'jihad' and the modus operandi of trans-national networks.

The book also covers contemporary politics, economy and society, and relates these to ongoing debates over future directions for the Armenian people, both in the homeland and in the diaspora communities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: World War I, the first 'total war' in history, set in motion profound changes in the economies, demographics, and philosophies of the warring states. In this book, leading experts on the Great War discuss its causes, character, and legacy. Their writings show that to study World War I is to encounter not only the dissolution of the four defeated empires-Russia, Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Turkey-but also the collapse of the optimistic assumption of progress that had defined the nineteenth century.
