Elles ont transforme ma vision de l'islam en me revelant une tout autre histoire que celle que le discours ambiant veut faire croire: l'islam n'est pas le resultat d'une revelation divine - ou de la predication de Mahomet - mais celui d'un processus tres long et tres complexe de reecriture de l'Histoire, s'enracinant dans des croyances juives et chretiennes devoyees, et manipule par les califes pour satisfaire leurs visees de domination politique. Cette decouverte restait encore a ce jour quasi inconnue du public. La faute sans doute a la complexite du sujet et a son caractere tres sensible qui l'ont confine dans les cercles tres restreints de la recherche. Comment alors la rendre accessible au plus grand nombre ? Comment l'expliquer et la replacer dans une perspective historique ? Comment les travaux les plus recents ont-ils pu la confirmer ? C'est ce a quoi j'espere contribuer avec le Grand secret de l'islam, fruit d'une longue recherche personnelle et de ma collaboration avec Edouard-Marie Gallez. A collection of translations from Arabic, including the Koran, was commissioned in 1140 by Peter the Venerable of Cluny, and d’Alverny found the manuscript in which his secretary wrote these out. This discovery led her to explore other translations into Latin of the Koran and other Islamic texts, to identify the work of the translators Hermann of Carinthia, Robert of Ketton and Mark of Toledo, and to depict the milieu in which this work was possible.

Ainsi, ce volume d'hommage se veut un temoignage de l'essor grandissant des etudes shi'ites imamites et de la dette indeniable de celles-ci aux savants reunis, il y a quarante ans, a Strasbourg, ainsi qu'a l'oeuvre immense d'Etan Kohlberg.

The 20th and 21th centuries are analysed from the perspective of the transformation of religious authority - certainly fragmented but vigorous - among the Bosnian Muslim Reformists, the Albanian Bektashis, the Alevis of Anatolia, and in female Sufism in Istanbul. It appears that religious authority is not limited to traditional authorities and is continuously confronted with limits, whether theological, political, social or institutional.
