Book Synopsis Readings in Creole Studies by : Ian F. Hancock
Download or read book Readings in Creole Studies written by Ian F. Hancock and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 1979-01-01 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Creole studies embrace a wide range is disciplines: history, ethnography, geography, sociology, etc. The phenomenon of creolization has come to be recognized as widespread; creolization presupposes contact, and that is a human universal. The present anthology discusses social, historical and theoretical aspects of over twenty pidgins and creoles. Part one deals with general theoretical issues, especially those relating to pidgin language formation and expansion. Part two deals with those pidgins and creoles lexically related to indigenous African languages, and with incipient features of creolization in African languages themselves; part three with those related to Romance languages, and part four with those related to English. Throughout the volume, several current debates are taken up, including the still unsettled issues of creole language origins and classification.

Book Synopsis French Dislocation by : Cécile de Cat
Download or read book French Dislocation written by Cécile de Cat and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2007-08-23 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The pervasive use of dislocations (as in Le chocolat, c'est bon) is a key characteristic of spoken French. This book offers various new and well-motivated insights, based on tests conducted by the author, on the syntactic analysis, prosody, and the interpretation of dislocation in spoken French. It also considers important aspects of the acquisition of dislocation by monolingual children learning different French dialects. The author argues that spoken French is a discourse-configurational language, in which topics are obligatorily dislocated. She develops a syntactically parsimonious account, which maximizes the import of interfaces involved with discourse and prosody. She proposes clear diagnostics, following a reexamination of the status of subject clitics and a reevaluation of the characteristic prosody of dislocated constituents. The theoretical arguments throughout the book rest on data that comes from corpora of spontaneous production and from various elitication experiments. This book throws new light on French syntax and prosody and makes an important and original contribution to the study of linguistic interfaces. Clearly expressed and tightly argued it will interest scholars and advanced students of French and of its acquisition as a first language as well as linguistic theorists interested in the interfaces between syntax, discourse, and phonology.
Book Synopsis Redefining Regional French by : David Hornsby
Download or read book Redefining Regional French written by David Hornsby and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-10-10 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study challenges the orthodox view that emergent regional varieties of French represent no more than an ephemeral dialect residue of little theoretical interest. It follows the life cycle of an obsolescent urban Picard variety, spoken in a mining town in the Pas-de-Calais, and attempts to unravel the complex reasons behind the survival of some local variants at the expense of others. Applying a sociolinguistic model developed by Peter Trudgill, it shows how the processes of levelling and simplification have driven change in a dialect contact situation, giving rise to a new, stable variety or koine. This is compared with other new urban varieties in Sweden and the UK, where different economic, social and demographic conditions have produced very different linguistic outcomes. The emergence of Regional French in the north, it is argued, may herald the start of a new diversification of French in Europe. This book will therefore interest both students of French and of language variation more generally.
