L'ouvrage allie démarche théorique neuve, influencée par les théories de l'énonciation et de l'analyse conversationnelle et interactionnelle, à un regard historique ouvert à la pratique quotidienne de la citation. Point ici de prescription ou d'interdit mais une "analyse du discours" applicable transversalement à tous les domaines des sciences humaines, dès lors qu'elles se fondent sur une négociation des paroles d'autrui.
