Book Synopsis The Military and Colonial Destruction of the Roman Landscape of North Africa, 1830-1900 by : Michael Greenhalgh
Download or read book The Military and Colonial Destruction of the Roman Landscape of North Africa, 1830-1900 written by Michael Greenhalgh and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2014-05-08 with total page 1039 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The French invaded Algeria in 1830, and found a landscape rich in Roman remains, which they proceeded to re-use to support the constructions such as fortresses, barracks and hospitals needed to fight the natives (who continued to object to their presence), and to house the various colonisation projects with which they intended to solidify their hold on the country, and to make it both modern and profitable. Arabs and Berbers had occasionally made use of the ruins, but it was still a Roman and Early Christian landscape when the French arrived. In the space of two generations, this was destroyed, just as were many ancient remains in France, in part because “real” architecture was Greek, not Roman.
Book Synopsis La raison des signes by : Stella Georgoudi
Download or read book La raison des signes written by Stella Georgoudi and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2011-12-09 with total page 644 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. How to foresee the unknown and master the unexpected? Ancient people tried to answer those questions by interpreting signs considered as divine messages. In this volume, the writers compare and examine this manifold questioning in the polytheistic and monotheistic societies of the ancient Mediterranean Sea. In the first place, it is shown how signs were ritually constructed within instituted practice of divination ; second, how, although some spontaneous natural phenomena appeared out of any instituted context, may nevertheless constitute omens or monition ; third, how the gods’ intervention may reveal a sort of intention in the course of national history or individual life ; finally, the essays study the epistemology of signs at work in some philosophical or theological elaborations, which may enlighten the tension between oracular evidence and ritual control of signs, and between revealed facts and reasoning arguments intending to neutralize the injunctions of the divine.
Book Synopsis African Christian Theologies and the Impact of the Reformation by : Heinrich Bedford-Strohm
Download or read book African Christian Theologies and the Impact of the Reformation written by Heinrich Bedford-Strohm and published by LIT Verlag Münster. This book was released on 2017 with total page 461 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the strongest heritages of the Reformation for Christianity was to return to the central role given to the Bible, translated in local dialects. Christianity expanded thanks to the translation of the Bible in vernacular languages worldwide. Most importantly, the people who had been victims of prejudices of race supremacy could now have access to God in their own language, culture, and idioms without intermediaries. It is largely thanks to Bible translations that the majority of those churches in Africa, born of European mission activities, continued to develop positively after the end of the colonial age, and that independent African churches emerged.
Download or read book La Cité du Logos: L’ecclésiologie de Clément d’Alexandrie et son enracinement christologique written by Léon-Ferdinand Karuhije and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2022-06-20 with total page 664 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Clement of Alexandria (AD 150-215) is one of the most brilliant thinkers of the early Christian centuries. His teaching, steeped as much in the Bible as in Greek thought, reveals to us the nature of the debates in the early days of the expansion of Christianity. This book deals with a subject little studied to this day, namely his thoughts on the Church. Yet it is a recurring subject in his works, where he reflects at length on the Church from the point of view of the being and the mission of the divine Logos. Analysis of Clement’s discourse on the Church therefore makes it possible to revisit the main intuitions of his Christology while shedding light on his perception of Christian identity at a time when it is still under construction.
