Book excerpt: En microscopie à champ proche optique dite "à ouverture" la lumière est confinée dans une ouverture de diamètre de l'ordre de 100 nm située en bout d'une fibre optique étirée et métallisée qui fait office de sonde excitatrice locale. Cette microscopie de proximité se carctérise essentiellement par l'utilisation des propriétés non propagatives de la lumière transmise par l'ouverture. Après un rappel des principes de bases de l'optique en champ proche et une description du fonctionnement du microscope utilisé dans ce travail, nous développons une étude théorique et analytique des profils d'émission en champ lointain de la pointe qui permet de justifier les propriétés observées expérimentalement dans ses carctérisations goniométriques. Ensuite, nous présentons un ensemble de résultats expérimentaux concernant l'étude de nano-objets fluorescents susceptibles d'améliorer notre compréhension des propriétés électromagnétiques locales du champ proche de la pointe. cette étude se termine par une discussion théorique sur la validité des modèles communément admis pour le champ proche (modèle de Bouwkamp) et par une présentation des premiers résultats de détection de molécules uniques obtenus à l'aide de ce microscope.

Book excerpt: Les propriétés singulières des ondes évanescentes ont permis le développement de la microscopie en champ proche optique, mais également l’émergence de capteurs moléculaires basée sur l’excitation de plasmons de surface. Ce travail de thèse est consacré au développement de nano-sondes à base de fibres optiques destinées à ces deux applications. Après un état de l’art des différents procédés de la littérature, ce travail aborde une nouvelle approche pour créer des nano-sondes optiques. La gravure chimique, pour créer une pointe à l’extrémité d’une fibre conique, est premièrement optimisée. Les étapes suivantes sont réalisées dans un dispositif plasma original, basé sur une décharge en régime de cathode creuse cylindrique. Pour finaliser la fabrication des sondes, les pointes métallisées sont ouvertes in situ avec une micro-étincelle obtenue via une décharge couronne en configuration pointe-plan. Notre microscope est ensuite détaillé et une étude paramétrique est menée afin d’optimiser la formation des images, les capacités de résolution du sont discutées. A titre d’exemple, le microscope est ensuite appliqué à la science des nano-matériaux, et quelles pistes d’investigation de nano-structures sont explorées, ainsi que le potentiel de spectroscopie Raman en champ proche. La spectroscopie résonante des plasmons de surface est aussi abordée. Les sondes spécialement modifiées sont ici destinées à la détection moléculaire en milieu aqueux. Les capteurs ainsi élaborés sont testés dans des microvolumes de solution, et leur capacité d’exaltation du signal Raman est présentée

Since the early eighties, atoms coupled to optical and microwave cavities have led to pioneering demonstrations of cavity quantum electrodynamics, Gedanken experiments, and building blocks for quantum information processing, for which the Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded in 2012. In the framework of semiconducting devices, strong coupling has allowed investigations into the physics of Bose gases in solid-state environments, and the latter holds promise for exploiting light-matter interaction at the single-photon level in scalable architectures. More recently, impressive developments in the so-called superconducting circuit QED have opened another fundamental playground to revisit cavity quantum electrodynamics for practical and fundamental purposes. This book aims at developing the necessary interface between these communities, by providing future researchers with a robust conceptual, theoretical and experimental basis on strong light-matter coupling, both in the classical and in the quantum regimes. In addition, the emphasis is on new forefront research topics currently developed around the physics of strong light-matter interaction in the atomic and solid-state scenarios.

Author of the famous Treatise on Political Economy in 1803, which was revised and re-edited on several occasions, he published numerous other works including a voluminous Complete Course in Practical Political Economy in 1828–9. He also taught political economy successively from 1815 until his death in three Parisian establishments: the Athénée, the Conservatory of Arts and Trades, and the Collège de France. The texts in which Say exposes his approach to political economy have not been available in the English language until now except for the fourth edition of the ‘Preliminary Discourse’ which serves as an introduction to the Treatise. This book presents a translation which renders his works accessible to the English speaking world. For the first time, English readers will be able to become directly immersed in Say’s principal texts, where he develops his conception of political economy. Jean-Baptiste Say and Political Economy proposes a translation of a selection of eleven of Say’s texts. The first three are versions of the ‘Preliminary Discourse’ from the Treatise’s editions of 1803, 1814 and 1826 with the variations of the editions of 1817, 1819 and 1841. The following four texts are the opening discourses pronounced at the Conservatory in 1820 and 1828 and the Collège de France in 1831 and 1832. The eighth text is the ‘General Considerations’ which open the Complete Course in Practical Political Economy of 1828, with the variations of the 1840 re-edition. The final three texts are those Say devotes to ‘the progress of political economy’ in what is akin to a history of economic thought. This volume is of great importance to economic historians and people studying Jean-Baptiste Say, as well as those who are interested in economic theory and philosophy and political economy.
