Au prix d'inévitables raccourcis, cet ouvrage s'efforce d'indiquer où se situent exactement les malentendus que l'atmosphère polémique de la "guerre des deux France" a longtemps exacerbés. Le but est aussi et surtout de mettre en lumière la démarche qui, dans la fidélité au message évangélique et à la Tradition vivante de l'Eglise, permet de surmonter ces malentendus et d'envisager l'avenir. La société de cette fin de siècle ne pourra refaire ce socle de valeurs communes dont elle a un pressant besoin que moyennant une démocratie de participation vivante et active.
