Pour répondre à cette question, nous avons évalué neuf enfants sourds sévères à profonds avec un test fondé sur cette approche cognitiviste : le L2MA (langage oral, langage écrit, mémoire, attention). L'analyse a donc consisté en neuf études de cas. Les résultats ont permis de souligner l'utilisation préférentielle d'une voie en lecture et écriture pour chaque enfant. Nous remarquons d'ailleurs que six enfants sur les neuf rencontrés lisent préférentiellement par adressage. Par ailleurs, nous avons constaté un déficit lexical commun à tous les enfants. Nous validons donc la possibilité d'analyser les compétences de l'enfant sourd grâce à une approche cognitive. Néanmoins, plus que la question du choix du courant d'analyse, c'est le mode de passation du L2MA qui est à remettre en cause. En effet, de nombreuses épreuves et consignes sont proposées à l'oral et ceci a mis les enfants sourds en difficulté. Nous avons ainsi dû utiliser le support écrit avec sept enfants. Trois épreuves sont particulièrement peu adaptées : la répétition de mots difficiles, la répétition de phrases et les dictées. Enfin, une des épreuves facultatives du L2MA paraît indispensable à l'évaluation de la production écrite de l'enfant sourd : le récit spontané "les ours".

A priori, les jeunes sourds n'auraient aucune raison de se trouver en difficulté dans des activités de raisonnement logique.Pour vérifier cela, une première étude visait à analyser les résultats obtenus par des adolescents sourds profonds, lors de la passation d'épreuves de l'Echelle de Pensée Logique de Longeot, épreuves caractéristiques de la pensée logique formelle, au sens piagétien du terme. Nous avons remarqué que certains jeunes éprouvaient des difficultés dans le maniement de la pensée logique, notamment pour des opérations logiques spécifiques du stade opératoire concret. Pourtant, ces adolescents, en classe de troisième, montrent de bons potentiels cognitifs et postulent pour une scolarité de second cycle à option scientifique. Partant de cette première constatation, nous avons voulu savoir ce qu'il en était pour des enfants sourds plus jeunes, se situant à un stade de pensée antérieur à celui de ces adolescents. Au stade des opérations concrètes, est-il possible de mettre déjà en évidence certaines difficultés? Nous avons donc mené une seconde étude sur trois enfants sourds profonds de douze ans implantés. Nous leur avons proposé cinq épreuves inspirées de celles de Piaget : conservation du volume et du poids, classification dite épreuve de «changements de critère », inclusion hiérarchique, utilisation opérationnelle du nombre. L'objectifprincipal de cette étude tend à explorer les conduites logiques de ces enfants.Comment appréhendent-ils ces épreuves? Quelles difficultés rencontrent-ils? Les difficultés portent-elles sur des épreuves particulières ou s'observent-elles d'une manière globale? Au cours de ce mémoire, après avoir présenté les résultats de nos différentes études, nous essayerons de répondre à l'ensemble des questions posées.
