This book was released on 2018-10-20 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Laminate and structural mechanics for the analysis of laminated composite plate structures with piezoelectric actuators and sensors are presented. The theories implement layerwise representations of displacements and electric potential, and can model both the global and local electromechanical response of smart composite laminates. Finite-element formulations are developed for the quasi-static and dynamic analysis of smart composite structures containing piezoelectric layers. Comparisons with an exact solution illustrate the accuracy, robustness and capability of the developed mechanics to capture the global and local response of thin and/or thick laminated piezoelectric plates. Additional correlations and numerical applications demonstrate the unique capabilities of the mechanics in analyzing the static and free-vibration response of composite plates with distributed piezoelectric actuators and sensors. Book excerpt: Composite materials are increasingly used in aerospace, underwater, and automotive structures. To take advantage of the full potential of composite materials, structural analysts and designers must have accurate mathematical models and design methods at their disposal. The objective of this monograph is to present the laminated plate theories and their finite element models to study the deformation, strength and failure of composite structures. Emphasis is placed on engineering aspects, such as the analytical descriptions, effective analysis tools, modeling of physical features, and evaluation of approaches used to formulate and predict the response of composite structures. The first chapter presents an overview of the text. Chapter 2 is devoted to the introduction of the definitions and terminology used in composite materials and structures. Anisotropic constitutive relations and Iaminate plate theories are also reviewed. Finite element models of laminated composite plates are presented in Chapter 3. Numerical evaluation of element coefficient matrices, post-computation of strains and stresses, and sample examples of laminated plates in bending and vibration are discussed. Chapter 4 introduces damage and failure criteria in composite laminates. Finally, Chapter 5 is dedicated to case studies involving various aspects and types of composite structures. Joints, cutouts, woven composites, environmental effects, postbuckling response and failure of composite laminates are discussed by considering specific examples.

Book excerpt: Analytical formulations are developed to account for the coupled mechanical, electrical, and thermal response of piezoelectric composite materials. The coupled response is captured at the material level through the thermopiezoelectric constitutive equations and leads to the inherent capability to model both the sensory and active responses of piezoelectric materials. A layerwise laminate theory is incorporated to provide more accurate analysis of the displacements, strains, stresses, electric fields, and thermal fields through-the-thickness. Thermal effects which arise from coefficient of thermal expansion mismatch, pyroelectric effects, and temperature dependent material properties are explicitly accounted for in the formulation. Corresponding finite element formulations are developed for piezoelectric beam, plate, and shell elements to provide a more generalized capability for the analysis of arbitrary piezoelectric composite structures. The accuracy of the current formulation is verified with comparisons from published experimental data and other analytical models. Additional numerical studies are also conducted to demonstrate additional capabilities of the formulation to represent the sensory and active behaviors. A future plan of experimental studies is provided to characterize the high temperature dynamic response of piezoelectric composite materials.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Smart structures that contain embedded piezoelectric patches are loaded by both mechanical and electrical fields. Traditional plate and shell theories were developed to analyze structures subject to mechanical loads. However, these often fail when tasked with the evaluation of both electrical and mechanical fields and loads. In recent years more advanced models have been developed that overcome these limitations. Plates and Shells for Smart Structures offers a complete guide and reference to smart structures under both mechanical and electrical loads, starting with the basic principles and working right up to the most advanced models. It provides an overview of classical plate and shell theories for piezoelectric elasticity and demonstrates their limitations in static and dynamic analysis with a number of example problems. This book also provides both analytical and finite element solutions, thus enabling the reader to compare strong and weak solutions to the problems. Key features: compares a large variety of classical and modern approaches to plates and shells, such as Kirchhoff-Love , Reissner-Mindlin assumptions and higher order, layer-wise and mixed theories introduces theories able to consider electromechanical couplings as well as those that provide appropriate interface continuity conditions for both electrical and mechanical variables considers both static and dynamic analysis accompanied by a companion website hosting dedicated software MUL2 that is used to obtain the numerical solutions in the book, allowing the reader to reproduce the examples given as well as solve problems of their own The models currently used have a wide range of applications in civil, automotive, marine and aerospace engineering. Researchers of smart structures, and structural analysts in industry, will find all they need to know in this concise reference. Graduate and postgraduate students of mechanical, civil and aerospace engineering can also use this book in their studies. www.mul2.com

This book was released on 2018-07 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mechanics for the analysis of laminated composite shells with piezoelectric actuators and sensors are presented. A new mixed-field laminate theory for piezoelectric shells is formulated in curvilinear coordinates which combines single-layer assumptions for the displacements and a layerwise representation for the electric potential. The resultant coupled governing equations for curvilinear piezoelectric laminates are described. Structural mechanics are subsequently developed and an 8-node finite-element is formulated for the static and dynamic analysis of adaptive composite structures of general laminations containing piezoelectric layers. Evaluations of the method and comparisons with reported results are presented for laminated piezoelectric-composite plates, a closed cylindrical shell with a continuous piezoceramic layer and a laminated composite semi-circular cantilever shell with discrete cylindrical piezoelectric actuators and/or sensors. Book excerpt: This report presents the results of an investigation into the formulation and application of assumed-stress hybrid finite-elements for bending of multilayer laminated plates and shells. Two families of hybrid-stress-based multilayer plate elements are considered; these elements are denoted as thick plate and moderately-thick plate elements. In the development of the thick plate elements, transverse shear deformation effects are included by allowing lines normal to the plate midsurface in the undeformed state to be piecewise linear from layer to layer in the deformed state. Transverse shear deformation effects are included in an average sense in the moderately-thick plate element family by assuming that straight lines normal to the plate midsurface prior to deformation remain straight but not necessarily normal to the plate midsurface after deformation. Comparison of the results obtained by using the thick plate and moderately-thick plate elements with independent analytical results shows that the moderately-thick plate elements are more efficient and practical for the analysis of multilayer structures having a large number of elastically dissimilar layers.

This book was released on 1902 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis introduces new conforming and non-conforming finite elements for the static and dynamic analysis of rotating composite layered plates and shells. The elements consider parabolic distributions of transverse shear stresses, and based on Lagrangian and Hermitian shape functions. They can deal with variable thickness distributions as well as uniform distributions, and they are fully capable to deal with rotating plate and shell structures, i. e. centrifugal stiffening and Coriolis force effects are considered. Natural frequency analysis, forced vibration analysis, and flutter analysis of composite layered plate and shell structures, employing those elements, have been investigated. A computer programming package based on the developed theory was designed, and it is machine independent and user friendly. A modular approach was adopted in the package structure to allow any further development to be considered. Efficient frontal solvers were adopted in the package for different types of analysis. The developed package has been successfully validated on a main frame computer (VAX), Unix workstations, and personal computers. Several case studies were investigated and the results obtained were compared with corresponding, published theoretical and/or experimental work. The package has proved to be a very useful tool for the design optimization of composite layered plates and shells by means of using different fibre angles for different layers so as to achieve the required strength and/or stiffness.
