Book excerpt: The legal industry has long been risk averse, but when it comes to adapting to the experience-driven world created by companies like Netflix, Uber, and Airbnb, adherence to the old status quo could be the death knell for today's law firms. In The Client-Centered Law Firm, Clio cofounder Jack Newton offers a clear-eyed and timely look at how providing a client-centered experience and running an efficient, profitable law firm aren't opposing ideas. With this approach, they drive each other. Covering the what, why, and how of running a client-centered practice, with examples from law firms leading this revolution as well as practical strategies for implementation, The Client-Centered Law Firm is a rallying call to unlock the enormous latent demand in the legal market by providing client-centered experiences, improving internal processes, and raising the bottom line.

In fact, some say it’s a must read for any lawyer competing for clients in today’s legal market. There are four things that make TLMB unique. First, it’s interesting and engaging. TLMB uses real-life stories of other private practitioners to highlight the best and worst marketing decisions and strategies. Second, it’s comprehensive. At 300 pages, it covers everything from specific strategies for making the phone ring, to training intake personnel and negotiating with vendors, to measuring ROI. Third, it’s written by a true pro in the industry. Matt Starosciak has nearly two decades of experience on all sides of the law firm marketing process, including work as a lawyer, marketing product sales rep, and consultant to some of the nation’s top law firms. Finally, TLMB provides takeaways on every page that can be implemented by attorneys today to improve their success in the practice of law.

Download or read book Legal Ethics and Professional Responsibility written by Ross Cranston and published by Oxford University Press on Demand. This book was released on 1995 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Among members of the legal profession and judiciary throughout the world, there is a genuine concern with establishing and maintaining high ethical standards. It is not difficult to understand why this should be so. Nor is it difficult to see the professional standards are not completelydivorced from ordinary morality. Indeed, legal ethics and professional responsibility are more than a set of rules of good conduct; they are also a commitment to honesty, integrity, and service in the practice of law. In order to ensure that the standards established are the right ones, it isnecessary first of all to examine important philosophical and policy issues, such as the need to reconsider the boundaries between, on the one hand, a lawyer's obligation to a client and, on the other, the public interest. It is also to be appreciated that conflicts of interest are pervasive andthat all too often they are so common that they are not recognized as such. Yet rarely is public policy clearly cut. The underlying themes of this book are: * that the move to more definite rules is not only inevitable but also desirable * that existing codes of professional practice cannot simply be treated as a system of specific rules * that the current set of ethical rules is contestable and requires further refinement, perhaps even radical surgery * and that legal ethics must be conceived in the more general area of professional responsibility The wider ethical issues of the operation of the legal profession as a whole are now firmly on the agenda. Both law schools and law professionals have a role to play in developing acceptable standards in this area and it is therefore appropriate that the essays in this volume are written by adistinguished group of law teachers and practitioners together with senior members of the judiciary. The book opens with an overview chapter, followed by three chapters analysing the ethical rules pertaining to the judiciary, the Bar, and solicitors, written by, respectively, the Master of the Rolls, Anthony Thornton, and Alison Crawley and Christopher Bramall. The following three chapters lookat the specific issues of confidentiality (Michael Brindle and Guy Dehn) and the particular ethical problems in the family and criminal law jurisdictions (Sir Alan Ward and Professor Andrew Ashworth respectively). Chapter 8, by Sir Alan Paterson, discusses the teaching of legal ethics, whilstChapters 9 and 10, by Marc Galanter, Thomas Palay, and Cyril Glasser put the subject in its wider social and professional context. The book finishes with a chapter which examines what lawyers may learn from looking at the study of medical ethics.

This book was released on 2017-10-18 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I asked my father, a retired attorney, what he did back in the day to develop new business for his law practice. He looked at me with confusion and said, "Nothing. I was a very good attorney. My phone rang and there was the business." How many attorneys can still say that? The reality is that developing a book of business has never been more challenging and more important than in today's competitively charged environment. To put a finer point on this, ask a group of legal recruiters about changing law firms and they will ask you the same initial question, "What size is your book?" Unfortunately, your ability to develop business is now more important than what law school you graduated or even your level of experience as a lawyer. As you may have heard, networking is one of the best ways to grow a legal practice. Most attorneys know this, but either haven't tried yet or have already experienced the time sucking void that networking can become. Time is money. Being efficient and process-oriented with how you network is half the battle. The Attorney's Networking Handbook was specifically written to help lawyers take the guesswork out of networking. The book includes proven methodologies, engaging stories and critical take-aways that will allow you to get actual results from your time invested.

Book excerpt: The unsung heroes who defend the accused from the ultimate punishment What motivates someone to make a career out of defending some of the worst suspected killers of our time? In Capital Defense, Jon B. Gould and Maya Pagni Barak give us a glimpse into the lives of lawyers who choose to work in the darkest corner of our criminal justice system: death penalty cases. Based on in-depth personal interviews with a cross-section of the nation’s top capital defense teams, the book explores the unusual few who voluntarily represent society’s “worst of the worst.” With a compassionate and careful eye, Gould and Barak chronicle the experiences of American lawyers, who—like soldiers or surgeons—operate under the highest of stakes, where verdicts have the power to either “take death off the table” or put clients on “the conveyor belt towards death.” These lawyers are a rare breed in a field that is otherwise seen as dirty work and in a system that is overburdened, under-resourced, and overshadowed by social, cultural, and political pressures. Examining the ugliest side of our criminal justice system, Capital Defense offers an up-close perspective on the capital litigation process and its impact on the people who participate in it.
