Book excerpt: The poem follows the journey of a well-intentioned but clumsy Archide who dreams of becoming a great writer. Despite his efforts, his writing is filled with awkward prose, tangled sentences, and poorly executed literary devices. Determined to improve, he seeks guidance from various sources but continues to struggle. However, he discovers his talent for humor along the way. Embracing this newfound skill, he finds success and fulfillment in making people laugh, even though he never achieves the literary greatness he once aspired to. The poem celebrates the Archide's journey of self-discovery and highlights important themes such as perseverance, embracing individual talents, and finding joy in creativity. Ultimately, it reminds us that success can come in unexpected forms and that sometimes, laughter is the best reward.

Book excerpt: Humor at its best is a somewhat fluid and transitory element, but most books about it are illustrated with hardened old jokes from the comic papers, or classic witticisms jerked out of their context. Max Eastman, in this work, avoids this catastrophe by quoting mainly from contemporary American humor. This is not an anthology in that selections have been made with a view to making a point rather than covering the field. The purpose of Eastman's fabled work is to make the reader laugh. Since his early school days, it has seemed to him that textbooks are wrongly written in that they are conducted in a way which ignores the natural operation of the mind. As a result, the opinion is universal, and under the circumstances a fact, that in order to learn anything you have to study. Since this introduction to humor is itself near to writing a textbook, Eastman uses the very text he constructs to illustrate the manner in which textbooks should be written. Examination and classification of the kinds of humorous experience upon the basis of a theory is a science. As such, this work offers a fair chance to illustrate a method of instruction. However, the distinction between a good joke and a bad one will not prevent the reader from making bad jokes nor enable one to make good ones. There is an artistic and playful element that simply cannot be taught. Enjoyment of Laughter presents a total view of the science of laughter and draws upon some of the great American humorists to do so.

Richman also examines the forms of humor and empathy that Shakespeare's comedies elicit.

This is storytelling at its funniest. If laughter is the best medicine, then this book is your prescription. Turn off the news and spend a few days not following current events. Instead, return to the basics—humanity’s ability to laugh at itself. Maybe you should even do a news cleanse for a few days! Hide under the covers and read these stories instead. Or read a chapter a day, or a story a day for 101 days. These pages contain the antidote to whatever is troubling you. They will definitely put you in a good mood. No one is safe from our writers— from spouses to parents to children to colleagues and friends. And of course the funniest of all are the stories they tell about their own mishaps and those “most embarrassing moments.” There’s no holding anything back in these pages, so prepare for lots of good, clean (and not so clean) fun.

Book excerpt: The book Potholes consists of a series of poems written to help readers grow in confidence and self-efficacy. Each poem contains a pothole- a difficult situation that confronts most students (and many adults) along with solutions that often work. With the majority of the poems written in the first person, I, the author makes a clarion call for initiative, which ignites a sense of responsibility among readers. The poems drive critical thinking, character building, collaboration, mental discipline, and the pursuit of education. The speaker in the poems varies from student, to teacher, to parent, making this book of poetry one that unites a community and one to be enjoyed by all. Many of the poems were inspired by the authors own three children when they faced similar childhood and teenage challenges. The book is illustrated by the authors older son.
