First, then, there will be found a complete, and, it is hoped, a judicious system of memorizing the Grammar, indicated at the beginning and in the progress of each lesson, by exact references. The revised edition of Andrews and Stoddard's Grammar is referred to, as it is very generally used, and is, no doubt, an the whole, the best yet published. As this system has been carefully studied, and faithfully proved by experiment in the school room, it is earnestly urged that it be strictly followed, without addition or substraction. Book excerpt: Excerpt from First Latin Lessons Evidently one of the chief values to be gained from two years' study of Latin is a better knowledge of the English language. This should involve On the one hand a clearer comprehension of grammatical structure and on the other an enlarged vocabulary and an increased accuracy in the use of words. If these are to be among the major objectives, they should be recognized in the organization of the material which is first presented. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Latin Lessons The present work is new, and has been prepared in response to the extensive demand for a beginners book suited for use in conjunction with the Latin Grammar. In all essentials it follows the plan of my Foundations of Latin, published in 1898. Beginning with Lesson XVII, it has been found possible to introduce a number of simple selections of continuous discourse, which, it is hoped, will add an element of interest to the book without detracting from its disciplinary value. Most of these selections are taken, with the consent of the publishers (Messrs. Longmans, Green and Co.), from Longmans' Illustrated First Latin Beading Book. I have also inserted frequent 'review lessons' throughout the book. The material of the body of the work is arranged in sixty-six 'Lessons, ' a designation chosen more in view of its convenience and familiarity than because the single 'Lessons' were deemed to represent the normal amount of work to be prepared for each class exercise. Many of them will be too long, probably, even for the best class. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Teaching of Latin IN the following pages I have attempted to show what a classical course can do for a boy, even though the time devoted to it be strictly limited. Many believe that classics are a good thing, but that they take up more hours Of the time-table than can be spared. This I think is an error. Chapters II., III. And IV. Contain a discussion Of the methods Of Latin teaching for the first three years. I have kept in view not only the boy with a genius for classics, who will flourish under any system, but also that Often neglected person, the average boy. The teaching Of Greek is not discussed here. I believe it should follow the lines Of Latin teaching. Progress, however, is much more rapid, because there is no need to spend time in learn ing again principles Of language already learnt in the Latin course. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Latin Lessons and Tables: Combining the Analytic and Synthetic Methods; Consisting of Selections From Cæsar's Commentaries, With a Complete System of Memorizing the Grammar, Notes, Exercises in Translating From English Into Latin, Tables, and a Vocabulary We have often met with bright, intelligent students of Latin, into whose hands these analytical books have been put by their teach ers, who have spent a year or more upon detached, isolated sen tenoes and exercises, with dissected portions of the Grammar inter spersed, who had become equally befogged and bewildered, and who were entirely lost and perplexed, when put into connected sentences of the regular classical authors. The writer has for years abandoned this whole system, as such; and it is believed that our best teachers are fast doing the same, and that there is a rapidly-increasing demand for a different course. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Latin Primer: A First Book of Latin for Boys and Girls This book is designed for a class of learners too young to use the Grammar or Lessons to advantage, including those who have not yet studied English grammar. While the inevi table drill-book had better be left till they are some years older, I do not see why intelligent children of ten or twelve as the way was, forty or fifty years ago - should not learn to know Latin and enjoy it in some of its simpler forms; which, indeed, seems to me the best possible introduction to a systematic school course. But, to serve this end, it must be taught, first of all, as a living and flexible tongue, not in the abstract principles and method of its grammar; and, in the second place, by familiar use in actual narrative and dialogue, not by committing to memory disjointed examples and dry forms. If we consent to regard it as a dead language merely, or study it as if it had no other than an antiquarian or a scientific interest, we cannot long uphold the general study of it at all. An easy and familiar reading knowledge of a language is worth incomparably more, to most students of it, than any supposed advantage in the study of its grammatical theory. These lessons aim to give as much of the grammar as is essential for this, and no more. The selections which follow have a vocabulary of considerable variety and range; and the learner who has mastered them all will be prepared either for the severer method of a classical course, or (if old enough) for entering directly on a line of read ing in the masterpieces of classical antiquity.
