Book Synopsis The Effects of Inflationon Economic Growth by : Mr.Jose De Gregorio
Download or read book The Effects of Inflationon Economic Growth written by Mr.Jose De Gregorio and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 1991-10-01 with total page 15 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper investigates the relationship between inflation and long-run growth. It presents an endogenous growth model that illustrates the channels through which inflation affects growth. The model highlights the effects of inflation on the productivity of capital and the rate of capital accumulation. The reduction in growth is caused by a diversion of resources away from activities that lead to faster rates of growth toward activities associated with reducing the costs of inflation. The negative association between inflation and growth is assessed empirically for a sample group of Latin American countries.
Book Synopsis Latin American Inflation by : Julio Cole
Download or read book Latin American Inflation written by Julio Cole and published by Praeger. This book was released on 1987-11-25 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his book, Cole points out that a simple monetarist model can explain Latin Amercian inflation, although it cannot by itself provide an explanation in terms of the ultimate causes of inflation. This is the basis of the structuralist critique, which attempts to provide an explanation in a deeper, overall sense. The author concludes that while the monetarist model deals with empirical testing and data, the structuralist approach highlights the human element and country-specific circumstances that cannot really be measured. In addition, an analysis of the recent Bolivian hyperinflation is given.

Book Synopsis Foreign Exchange Intervention in Inflation Targeters in Latin America by : Mr.Marcos d Chamon
Download or read book Foreign Exchange Intervention in Inflation Targeters in Latin America written by Mr.Marcos d Chamon and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2019-02-28 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Foreign exchange intervention is widely used as a policy tool, particularly in emerging markets, but many facets of this tool remain limited, especially in the context of flexible exchange rate regimes. The Latin American experience can be informative because some of its largest countries adopted floating exchange rate regimes and inflation targeting while continuing to intervene in foreign exchange markets. This edited volume reviews detailed accounts from several Latin American countries’ central banks, and it provides insight into how and with what aim many interventions were decided and implemented. This book documents the effectiveness of intervention and pays special attention to the role of foreign exchange intervention policy within inflation-targeting monetary frameworks. The main lesson from Latin America’s foreign exchange interventions, in the context of inflation targeting, is that the region has had a considerable degree of success. Transparency and a clear communication policy have been key. For economies that are not highly dollarized, rules-based intervention helped contain financial instability and build international reserves while preserving inflation targets. The Latin American experience can help other countries in the design and implementation of their policies.

Download or read book Monetary Policy Strategies for Latin America written by Frederic S. Mishkin and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2000 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Instead of focusing the debate about the conduct of monetary policy on whether the nominal exchange rate should be fixed or flexible, the focus should be on whether the monetary policy regime appropriately constrains discretion in monetary policymaking. Three frameworks deserve serious discussion as possible long-run strategies for monetary policy in Latin America. A hard exchange-rate peg, monetary targeting, and inflation targeting.
Book Synopsis The Decline of Latin American Economies by : Sebastian Edwards
Download or read book The Decline of Latin American Economies written by Sebastian Edwards and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2009-02-15 with total page 427 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Latin America’s economic performance is mediocre at best, despite abundant natural resources and flourishing neighbors to the north. The perplexing question of how some of the wealthiest nations in the world in the nineteenth century are now the most crisis-prone has long puzzled economists and historians. The Decline of Latin American Economies examines the reality behind the struggling economies of Argentina, Chile, and Mexico. A distinguished panel of experts argues here that slow growth, rampant protectionism, and rising inflation plagued Latin America for years, where corrupt institutions and political unrest undermined the financial outlook of already besieged economies. Tracing Latin America’s growth and decline through two centuries, this volume illustrates how a once-prosperous continent now lags behind. Of interest to scholars and policymakers alike, it offers new insight into the relationship between political systems and economic development.
