Book Synopsis Composite Steel Structures by : R. Narayanan
Download or read book Composite Steel Structures written by R. Narayanan and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1987-07-09 with total page 187 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The constant need for cost-effective structural forms has led to the increasing use of composite construction, and a substantial amount of research effort is currently being spent in developing techniques for combining concrete and steel effectively. Significant economies in this form of construction have been observed, especially in bridges and building floors. Codes of Practice on composite construction are being revised in the UK and in Europe, in the light of the substantial amount of knowledge that has been generated in recent years. An International Conference organised by the Department of Civil and Structural Engineering, University College, Cardiff, UK, with the specific objective of discussing all types of metal structures in an integrated way, provided a forum for the dissemination of new concepts and for reviewing developments; the expectations of the organisers have been amply justified and exceeded by the level of international response to the call for papers. This volume contains 17 papers on composite steel structures, presented at the Conference, many of which were by well-known experts in their respective fields.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Load Testing of Bridges, featuring contributions from almost fifty authors from around the world across two interrelated volumes, deals with the practical aspects, the scientific developments, and the international views on the topic of load testing of bridges. Volume 12, Load Testing of Bridges: Current practice and Diagnostic Load Testing, starts with a background to bridge load testing, including the historical perspectives and evolutions, and the current codes and guidelines that are governing in countries around the world. The second part of the book deals with preparation, execution, and post-processing of load tests on bridges. The third part focuses on diagnostic load testing of bridges. Volume 13, Load Testing of Bridges: Proof Load Testing and the Future of Load Testing, focuses first on proof load testing of bridges. It discusses the specific aspects of proof load testing during the preparation, execution, and post-processing of such a test (Part 1). The second part covers the testing of buildings. The third part discusses novel ideas regarding measurement techniques used for load testing. Methods using non-contact sensors, such as photography- and video-based measurement techniques are discussed. The fourth part discusses load testing in the framework of reliability-based decision-making and in the framework of a bridge management program. The final part of the book summarizes the knowledge presented across the two volumes, as well as the remaining open questions for research, and provides practical recommendations for engineers carrying out load tests. This work will be of interest to researchers and academics in the field of civil/structural engineering, practicing engineers and road authorities worldwide.

Book Synopsis AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specifications by : American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials
Download or read book AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specifications written by American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 1134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The provisions of these Specifications are intended for the design, evaluation and rehabilitation of both fixed and movable highway bridges. Mechanical, electrical, and special vehicular and pedestrian safety aspects of movable bridges, however, are not covered. Provisions are not included for bridges used solely for railway, rail transit or public utilities. For bridges not fully covered herein, the provisions of these Specifications mat be applied, as augmented with additional design criteria where required. These specifications are not intended to supplant proper training or the exercise of judgment by the Designer, and state only the minimum requirements necessary to provide for public safety. The Owner or the Designer may require the sophistication of design or the quality of materials and construction to be higher than the minimum requirements. The concept of safety through redundancy and ductility, and protection against scour and collision are emphasized. The design provisions of these Specifications employ the Load and Resistance Factor Design, LRFD, methodology. The factors have been developed from the theory of reliability based upon current statistical knowledge of loads and structural performance. Methods of analysis, other than those included in previous Specifications, and the modelling techniques inherent in them are included, and their use is encouraged. The commentary is not intended to provide a complete historical background concerning the development of these, or previous Specifications, nor is it intended to provide a detailed summary of the studies and research data reviewed in formulating the provisions of the Specification. However, references to some of the research data are provided for those who wish to study the background material in depth. The commentary directs attention to other documents that provide suggestions for carrying out the requirements and intent of these Specifications. However, those documents and this commentary are not intended to be a part of these Specifications."--Page1-1.
