Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lateral Curvature of the Spine and Round Shoulders In the three years and a half since the second edition of this book was published there has been much discussion of the question of the treatment of scoliosis by forcible correction, and a greatly increased interest has been awakened in the matter. In 1911 a modification of former methods of forcible correction was advocated, and for this modification was claimed a degree of effectiveness hitherto quite unknown and not in accord with our pathological knowledge. The method thus advocated was enthusiastically accepted and loudly acclaimed by many competent men. But in the last year or two a reaction has set in, and much unfavorable criticism of the method has been published. Under these circumstances I have fallen back on my own personal experience, and have published certain well-recorded cases showing what I have personally been able to accomplish by forcible correction. In addition to this I have stated what I believe to be the status of the matter at present, a status still unsettled. Apparently the time has come when a serious analysis of the results by means of roentgenograms will be required to place the matter on a convincing basis. Assertions and opinions have too long prevailed in scoliosis, and tangible facts are now required. I have rewritten a large part of the section on treatment, and I have revised extensively other parts of the book, condensing where I could and expanding where it seemed necessary. A chapter on the history of scoliosis has been added, because there seemed to be nothing in English on the subject. I have endeavored to reclassify and rearrange certain parts of the book in order to present with greater clearness certain phases of this complicated affection, because consideration of the matter has in the past tended toward complexity, and it has seemed to me that a clear statement of essential points was desirable in a book intended largely for use as a text-book. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Causes and Treatment of Lateral Curvature of the Spine Although it be unadvisable that an author should in a preface argue the necessity of reading his book, he may nevertheless be permitted to state why it has been written. In the present plethora of medical literature no one should publish unless he has something to say which he believes to be more than a mere repetition of what has been said in another form, - something which he believes to be both new and useful. The reason of my having such faith in the ensuing pages may be thus stated. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. While most texts are highly subspecialized or focus on only a specific area of management, The Spine Handbook provides a thorough overview of the entire spine and interdisciplinary treatment of common spinal conditions. Sections build from the foundations of history and examination, radiological imaging, and behavioral assessment through the core topics of both interventional and surgical options, as well as exploring emerging and special conditions, and neuromodulation. Chapters are written by experts from a wide array of fields, including physical therapists, radiologists, psychologists, physiatrists, anesthesiologists, orthopedic spine surgeons, and neurosurgeons. Each chapter contains key points to summarize content and discussions of anatomy, pathophysiology, presentation, imaging, and treatment options. This comprehensive handbook provides the fundamental diagnostic and therapeutic information needed to effectively deliver 'best practice' care for spinal disorders, making it a must-read for physicians of any training level that may encounter or treat spinal disorders.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a practical, step-by-step guide to orthopedic examination and diagnosis. The author explains a systematic classification of clinical findings that has proven very useful in diagnosing orthopedic disorders in daily routine. The approach to examination begins with a checklist covering the complete patient history, including subjective descriptions of complaints. This is followed by a stepwise approach to physical examination of the patient and collection of clinical findings. Photographs and illustrations clearly depict the necessary examination techniques. The main symptoms are then determined from the patient history and clinical findings, leading to a diagnosis. An overview of all relevant orthopedic conditions for each region of the body facilitates differential diagnosis and thereby completes the examination findings. This book will be of particular value for new residents in orthopedics and trauma but will also be useful for the experienced physician as a means of refreshing knowledge or as a reference.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As we stated in our message in the book of abstracts for this congress, we have planned the programme over a long period with one clear objective: to present musculoskeletal medicine as an integral part of orthodox medical practice, rather than as something alternative or complementary. To this end we have based the plenary programme as far as possible on accepted epidemiological, anatomical, physiological and pathological phenomena. Scientifically well-validated material must surely be the base upon which any viable musculoskeletal medicine practice may be built. While we have chosen the plenary programme to reflect musculoskeletal medicine as a part of orthodoxy, we realize and wish to emphasize that there is a wealth of original work that has been carried out within FIMM. For this reason our first innovation for the congress was to invite members of the scientific advisory committee to select for a 'directed' programme the three topics they felt were of greatest current importance. The results of this democratic procedure was the choice of the sacroiliac joint, a comparison of manual therapies and biomechanics. This illustrates the broad direction of present thinking within FIMM.
