Book excerpt: The South China Sea is a region of significant importance in terms of the records of SE Asian tectonics, including Tibetan Plateau uplift, and the onset and evolution of the East Asian monsoon. The Mekong River has been a dominant sediment source since at least late Miocene time and has headwaters on the eastern Tibetan Plateau. Understanding the Pliocene to Recent stratigraphy of the paleo-Mekong Delta and associated shelf-edge deposits aids in understanding changes in accommodation, sea level, and sediment supply. This record might then be useful in interpreting the longterm history of basin evolution in the Nam Con Son Basin. Nine sequence boundaries and associated sequences are recognized along the late Miocene to latest Pleistocene shelf in the East Nam Con Son Basin. Age constraints were assigned to key stratigraphic horizons by correlating sequence boundaries with published sea level curves. Accommodation in the study area is controlled by shelf -edge compaction, rift-related thermal subsidence, non-rift-related anomalous subsidence, eustatic change, and shelf edge faulting. Two primary sources supplied sediment to the southwestern South China Sea during Pliocene to Recent time and likely include the paleo-Mekong Delta and a fluviodeltaic system originating from the Sunda Shelf, such as the Molengraaff River. Changes in thickness, area, and location of Pliocene to Recent shelf-edge delta deposits reflect changes in accommodation and sediment supply over time, as well as progradation of the shelf edge during Pliocene to Recent time and avulsion of the shelf edge delta. Anomalous subsidence of LGM shelf edge deposits is estimated at approximately 40-50 m deeper than expected. The current depth of the LGM deltaic wedge may indicate renewed rapid tectonic subsidence during the last 18,000 yrs, possible compaction effects or a combination of these.

Abstract: A study of marine palaeo-landscape development through a sediment core in the western Hong Kong waters has been carried out in this project as the sedimentation record could reflect the environmental changes during the Holocene period. The objectives of this study was to reveal the influences of Holocene post-glacial sea-level fluctuations and the monsoonal freshwater discharge changes to the sedimentation processes in the mouth region of the Pearl River Estuary. These are the two important factors which shape the palaeo-landscape development. Data has been obtained from a ground-truthing vibrocore to 35m below the seafloor at the south of the Shek Pik Reservoir, south Lantau Island. The sediment core was subsampled for elemental analysis to study the sources of the organic carbon by use of stable carbon isotope ratio (Ϭ13C) and for particle size analysis to reveal the energy state of the sedimentary environment. Shell fragments were chosen for radiocarbon analysis to construct the core chronology and marine seismic profiles were obtained to present the sub-bottom geological layers. The data is presented in the form of graphs and tables in showing the sediment changes along the core in different period of time. The data has been interpreted in relation to the knowledge of post-glacial sea-level rise and the proposed model of the Pearl River Estuary evolution from previous studies. Comparison is also made with other sediment cores around the Lantau Island to reveal the regional palaeo-environmental changes in the Holocene period. It is concluded that the sediment core has revealed four major phases of environmental change which is in general agreement with the previous studies except this data set has also shown a few localized climatic events in the mid-Holocene period. The sea-level low stand in the late Pleistocene had incised a network of drainage system on the exposed continental shelf which is the north South China Sea in present time. The rapid rising sea-level by Melt Water Pulse 1B filled the palaeo-valleys with alluvium deposits from 10600 to 9000 cal. yr BP at high sedimentation rate and the East Asian Monsoon was strengthened from 8800 to 5500 cal. yr BP as shown by the freshwater organic carbon deposited in the marine environment. Unconfined deposition occurred when the sediments spilled out of the palaeo-valleys and slowly covered the basin in stable sea-level and low hydrodynamic conditions. Book excerpt: This edited volume is based on the best papers accepted for presentation during the 1st Springer Conference of the Arabian Journal of Geosciences (CAJG-1), Tunisia 2018. The book is of interest to all researchers in the fields of Mineralogy, Geochemistry, Petrology and Volcanology. The Earth's interior is a source of heat, which makes our planet unique. This source regulates the formation and evolution of rocks at larger scales, and of minerals and sediments toward smaller scales. In such context, the exploration of georesources (products) has to be related to petrogenesis (processes). This volume offers an overview of the state-of-the-art petrogenesis and exploration in, but not limited to, the Middle East and Mediterranean regions. It gives new insights into processes and products related to the Earth's interior, and associated georesources by international researchers. Main topics include: 1. Petrogenetic processes: geochemistry, geochronology and geophysical approaches 2. Surficial processes: sedimentation and facies analysis 3. Applied mineralogy and tectonics 4. Geological research applied to mineral deposits

Book excerpt: Sea otters and polar bears are carnivorous marine mammals that still resemble their terrestrial ancestors. Compared with Cetacea (whales and dolphins), Sirenia (dugongs and manatees), and Pinnipedia (seals, sea lions, and walrus), they are less adapted for an aquatic life and the most recently evolved among marine mammals. Sea otters are amphibious but seldom come ashore, and polar bears primarily occur on sea ice or along the shore. When at sea, both species spend most of their time swimming at the surface or making short, shallow dives when foraging or pursuing prey. Indeed, polar bears rarely pursue seals in water. Nevertheless, polar bears are powerful swimmers and will stalk seals from the water. As with many other large carnivores, they are solitary hunters. Although sea otters are gregarious and form aggregations at sea called rafts, they are primarily asocial. Except during mating, the principal interaction among sea otters occurs between a female and offspring during the six-month dependency period. In large carnivores (e.g., wolves and lions) that feed on ungulates, sociality and cooperation are favored because of the need to capture large prey and defend carcasses. Polar bears, which are the largest terrestrial carnivore, are solitary hunters of seals and are neither gregarious nor social. Males and females briefly associate during courtship and mating. During this time, males aggressively compete for females. At other times, males generally avoid each other except for aggregations of males that form while summering on land, and females with cubs avoid males, which are known for infanticide. As with sea otters, the interaction of polar bears outside of mating occurs between a female and her offspring during the 2-3 year dependency period. This interaction is critically important when altricial cubs are born in the winter den. This book provides new insight into the ethology and behavioral ecology of sea otters and polar bears. Each chapter reviews the discoveries of previous studies and integrates recent research using new techniques and technology. The authors also address historic and current anthropogenic challenges for their survival as climate change alters entire marine ecosystems.

Book excerpt: The interest in seismic stratigraphic techniques to interpret reflection datasets is well established. The advent of sophisticated subsurface reservoir studies and 4D monitoring, for optimising the hydrocarbon production in existing fields, does demonstrate the importance of the 3D seismic methodology. The added value of reflection seismics to the petroleum industry has clearly been proven over the last decades. Seismic profiles and 3D cubes form a vast and robust data source to unravel the structure of the subsurface. It gets nowadays exploited in ever greater detail. Larger offsets and velocity anisotropy effects give for instance access to more details on reservoir flow properties like fracture density, porosity and permeability distribution, Elastic inversion and modelling may tell something about the change in petrophysical parameters. Seismic investigations provide a vital tool for the delineation of subtle hydrocarbon traps. They are the basis for understanding the regional basin framework and the stratigraphic subdivision. Seismic stratigraphy combines two very different scales of observation: the seismic and well-control. The systematic approach applied in seismic stratigraphy explains why many workers are using the principles to evaluate their seismic observations. The here presented modern geophysical techniques allow more accurate prediction of the changes in subsurface geology. Dynamics of sedimentary environments are discussed with its relation to global controling factors and a link is made to high-resolution sequence stratigraphy. ‘Seismic Stratigraphy Basin Analysis and Reservoir Characterisation’ summarizes basic seismic interpretation techniques and demonstrates the benefits of intergrated reservoir studies for hydrocarbon exploration. Topics are presented from a practical point of view and are supported by well-illustrated case histories. The reader (student as well as professional geophysicists, geologists and reservoir engineers) is taken from a basic level to more advanced study techniques. * Overview reflection seismic methods and its limitations.* Link between basic seismic stratigraphic principles and high resolution sequence stratigraphy.* Description of various techniques for seismic reservoir characterization and synthetic modelling.* Overview nversion techniques, AVO and seismic attributes analysis.
