As the papers presented here show, diamictite is only one of many types of deposits that form in the glacial-marine sedimentary environment. Papers presented in this volume examine the Quaternary glacia1-marine sedimentary picture in subarctic Alaska, Antarctica, the Arctic Ocean, the Kane Basin, Baffin Island, the Puget-Fraser Lowland of Washington and British Columbia, and the North Atlantic Ocean. Ancient glacia1-marine depos its described are the Neogene Yakataga Formation of southern Alaska, the Late Paleozoic Dwyka Formation of the Karoo Basin of South Africa, and the Precambrian Mineral Fork Formation of Utah. Book excerpt: The Kanairiktok River Valley, central coastal Labrador, extends more than 100 km inland at about 54°45'N latitude. Three of the five sedimentary units in the bluffs of the modern river were deposited in a marine embayment that occupied the isostatically depressed area during the Late Quaternary. The lateral relationships between the units are poorly known due to limited chronological control. The oldest units (units A and B) were deposited from surface sediment plumes originating from several points of fresh water input into the marine fjord, and from a variety of density currents. Unit B contains rare shells that have been dated at 7950 ± 95 yr B.P. (Beta-28885). Evidence for marine conditions comes from the local occurrence of (a) a periglacial shell community including Portlandia arctica and Mya arenaria, (b) benthic foraminifera including Elphidium excavatum f. clavata, Cassidulina reniforme and Islandiella helenae, and (c) marine dinocysts (Brigantedinium). Density currents became progressively more dominant as fjord-head and side-entry deltas prograded. Due to rapid rates of emergence, marine conditions existed for less than 2000 years in the thesis area (from about 8-6 ka), and perhaps for only a few hundred years in the western part of the area nearest the ice margin. Proximal deltaic sediments were deposited from fjord-head and side-entry deltas as the middle and eastern parts of the study area were emerging (upper part of Unit B and parts of Unit C). The marine and deltaic sediments are overlain by either local aeolian sands of Unit C or fluvial deposits of Unit D. The fluvial system truncated and reworked part of the underlying deltaic and marine sediments. A glacial re-advance may have occurred after the western part of the area became emergent, depositing ice-contact glaciofluvial sediments of units C and D and possibly till (Unit E) over marine muds. Alternatively, some Unit E deposits may have been deposited by debris flows of glaciogenic sediments. -- The main contributions of the thesis are: (1) description and interpretation of the postglacial sedimentary record of the Kanairiktok Valley area, (2) a local chronology of deglaciation and sea level, (3) the first sedimentological, micropalaeontological and process link between marine studies (Labrador Shelf and modern bays) and the land record of Quaternary events in coastal Labrador.

Book excerpt: Two gravity cores were collected from 43 km and 90 km offshore of Kuala Terengganu (western Sunda Shelf, southern South China Sea) at ~60 m water depth to characterize late Quaternary paleoenvironments by using bulk sediment magnetic susceptibility (BMS), elemental analysis via X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (XRF), and foraminiferal analyses. Radiocarbon age estimates (using benthic foraminiferal carbonate material) indicated the nearshore core was Holocene (ca. 10,000-6,000 cal years BP) in age while the offshore core was deposited prior to the last glacial maximum (ca. 45,000 cal years BP and possibly older) during marine isotope stage (MIS) 3 (ca. 60,000 - 30,000 yrs BP) within the late Pleistocene. Elemental and BMS data agree well within both cores, except Pleistocene sediments exhibit higher BMS (ca. 1x10-4 si) and higher calcium content (ca. 2%) than Holocene sediments. These data can be interpreted as representing stronger terrestrial influence during the deposition of Pleistocene sediments or a higher dissolution of calcium carbonate. BMS data, elemental data, and micropaleontological evidence, relative abundances of 64 benthic foraminiferal species, indicate that both cores were deposited in an inner shelf environment similar to the modern shelf environment at ca. 50-60 m water depth. However, a higher ratio of planktonic foraminifera (Holocene: 0-1.3%, Pleistocene: 0-8.5%) suggests a greater influence of open marine waters in the Pleistocene sediments. The position of sea level during deposition of the late Pleistocene cored sediments is higher (ca. 60-0 m depending on the data set) than eustatic published sea-level data for MIS 3. This incongruity could be caused by age inaccuracies from limitations of the radiocarbon dating technique, although this seems unlikely as the lower range of age estimates fall within the technique and the uppermost range falls on the border of the limitations of the technique. Other options for the incongruity include large margins of error for late Pleistocene sea-level reconstruction and vertical crustal movement post-deposition from isostatic adjustment or tectonic activity.

During the the last about 20 years, however, several international and multidisciplinary ship expeditions, including the first scientific drilling on Lomonosov Ridge in 2004, a break-through in Arctic research, were carried out into the central Artic and its surrounding shelf seas. Results from these expeditions have greatly advanced our knowledge on Arctic Ocean paleoenvironments. Published syntheses about the knowledge on Arctic Ocean geology, on the other hand, are based on data available prior to 1990. A comprehensive compilation of data on Arctic Ocean paleoenvironment and its short-and long-term variability based on the huge amount of new data including the ACEX drilling data, has not been available yet.
