Book Synopsis Nearshore Marine Paleoclimatic Regions, Increasing Zoogeographic Provinciality, Molluscan Extinctions, and Paleoshorelines, California by : Clarence A. Hall
Download or read book Nearshore Marine Paleoclimatic Regions, Increasing Zoogeographic Provinciality, Molluscan Extinctions, and Paleoshorelines, California written by Clarence A. Hall and published by Geological Society of America. This book was released on 2002 with total page 502 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Approximately 3000 middle and late Cenozoic nearshore marine molluscan taxa from western California are assigned to six time periods, spanning ~25 m.y. In this interdisciplinary study, western California is palinspastically restored for each of the time periods by backsliding and back-rotating large fault blocks or crustal units. Marine fossil assemblages are assigned to nearshore paleoclimatic regions or water masses within palinspastically restored California. In addition, this volume reveals positive feedback mechanisms between paleolatitudinal changes in sea-surface paleotemperature gradients and changes in the diversity of marine mollusks along the California coast through time; defines "equable" based effective temperatures; and analyzes extinction rates among macroinvertebrate marine taxa from coastal California and the possible causes of these extinctions. The late Paleogene to Neogene faunas reflect an increase in faunal diversity related to strengthened temperature gradients, greater extremes in sea-surface temperatures, reduction in temperateness, and the development of an embayed California coastline.
Book Synopsis Biostratigraphy, Age, and Paleoenvironment of the Pliocene Beaufort Formation on Meighen Island, Canadian Arctic Archipelago by : R.W. Barendregt
Download or read book Biostratigraphy, Age, and Paleoenvironment of the Pliocene Beaufort Formation on Meighen Island, Canadian Arctic Archipelago written by R.W. Barendregt and published by Geological Society of America. This book was released on 2021-09-24 with total page 39 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Meighen Island is a keystone site in the Neogene Canadian High Arctic, unique in the Beaufort Formation for its interbedded marine tongue. This volume is a comprehensive report on the biostratigraphy, age, and correlation of Meighen Island to other important Arctic localities from the standpoint of deposits exposed in the area of Bjaere Bay on the west side of the Island. The authors consider the diverse fossil macrofloras and pollen, the terrestrial and marine faunas, magnetostratigraphy, and amino acid racemization and put this site in the context of major changes in climate and geography during the Pliocene"--

Book excerpt: Microtine history indicates mosaic evolution and complex dispersal patterns around the Northern Hemisphere ; by reflecting this history and evaluating stage of population evolution, microtine biochronology can discriminate time periods as brief as 5,000 years.
Book Synopsis Late Cretaceous and Cenozoic History of North American Vegetation by : Alan Graham
Download or read book Late Cretaceous and Cenozoic History of North American Vegetation written by Alan Graham and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1999-03-25 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a unique and integrated account of the history of North American vegetation and paleoenvironments over the past 70 million years. It includes discussions of the modern plant communities, causal factors for environmental change, biotic response, and methodologies. The history reveals a North American vegetation that is vast, immensely complex, and dynamic.
Book Synopsis The Greenland Entomofauna by : Jens Böcher
Download or read book The Greenland Entomofauna written by Jens Böcher and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2015-05-26 with total page 897 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Greenland Entomofauna an international team of 64 taxonomic specialists provide for the first time a richly illustrated guide to the identification of the ≈1200 species of Hexapods/Insects, Arachnids and Myriapods so far known to occur in the country. While the composition, origin and adaptations of the Greenland fauna has always been a challenge to biogeographers and ecologists/ecophysiologists, the provision of a tool for detailed identification of its constituent species is now particularly timely, since global climate change will expectedly have a particularly noticeable impact on biota at high latitudes. This obviously renders the feasibility of monitoring distributional range shifts of the principal components of this biota a matter of some urgency. Book Synopsis Arctic and Environmental Change by : J.A. Dowdeswell
Download or read book Arctic and Environmental Change written by J.A. Dowdeswell and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-09-17 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This timely book presents a wide-ranging review of Arctic environmental change in response to global warming, and gives a broad insight into the transformation of the Arctic which we can expect during the next century. It is in high northern latitudes that we can expect to observe global warming at its most powerful, making it a natural laboratory where climate changes and their impacts can be monitored and studied more readily than elsewhere in the world. Fourteen authoritative reviews cover the predictions of warming rates by General Circulation Models; variabilities in atmospheric circulation and moisture flux; the dynamics of the polar vortex in the Arctic and its role in ozone loss; the countervailing influence of air pollution in reducing solar irradiance; and the impact of climatic change on Arctic terrestrial and marine ecosystems. Also detailed are the thermohaline circulation of the ocean, the extent and thickness of sea ice, the sizes of glaciers and ice sheets, and the extent of permafrost. Moving to past changes, the records from Greenland ice cores and deep ocean drilling are reviewed for what they tell us about past climates and glaciation in the Arctic., The book paints a vivid and disturbing picture of the enhanced warming that can be expected in the Arctic relative to lower latitudes, and of the major impacts that this will have on the northern cryosphere. It will be an invaluable reference for anyone seeking a greater understanding of the factors and processes affecting the arctic environment, which may ultimately have a major impact on global climatic change.
