Book excerpt: Eight glaciers, covering an area of 1.63 km2, reside on the northern and northeastern slopes of the Goat Rocks tallest peaks in the Cascades of central Washington. At least three glacial stands occurred downstream from these glaciers. Closest to modern glacier termini are Little Ice Age (LIA) moraines that were deposited between 1870 and 1899 AD, according to the lichenometric analysis. They are characterized by sharp, minimally eroded crests, little to no soil cover, and minimal vegetation cover. Glacier reconstructions indicate that LIA glaciers covered 8.29 km2, 76% more area than modern ice coverage. The average LIA equilibrium line altitude (ELA) of 1995 ± 70 m is ~150 m below the average modern ELA of 2149 ± 76 m. To satisfy climate conditions at the LIA ELA, the winter snow accumulation must have been 8 to 43 cm greater and mean summer temperatures 0.2 to 1.3 oC cooler than they are now. Late Pleistocene to early Holocene (LPEH) aged moraines are located between 100 and 400 m below the LIA deposits. They have degraded moraine crests, few surface boulders, and considerable vegetation and soil cover. Volcanic ashes indicate LPEH moraines were deposited before 1480 AD while morphometric data suggest deposition during the late Pleistocene or early Holocene. The average LPEH ELA of 1904 ± 110 m is ~ 240 m and ~90 m below the modern and LIA ELAs, respectively. The climate change necessary to maintain a glacier with an ELA at that elevation for LPEH conditions requires the winter accumulation to increase by 47 to 48 cm weq and the mean summer temperature to cool by 1.4 to 1.5 oC. Last glacial maximum (LGM) moraines are located more than 30 km downstream from modern glacial termini. They are characterized by hummocky topography, rounded moraine crests, complete vegetation cover, and well developed soil cover. Moraine morphometry, soil characteristics, and distance from modern glacial termini indicate that deposition occurred at least 15 ka BP during an expansive cooling event, the last being the LGM. The LGM ELA of 1230 m is ~920 m below the modern ELA. The climate change necessary to maintain a glacier with an ELA at that elevation for LGM conditions requires the mean summer temperature to cool by 5.6 oC with no change in precipitation.

Due to this sensitivity, glaciers in this region are excellent recorders of past climate fluctuations. This high-resolution chronology left on the land by these glaciers is an important link in deciphering the dynamic relationship between glaciers and climate, leading to a better understanding of the extent and magnitude of past Arctic climate variability. Here we present new 10Be based glacier chronologies from the late Pleistocene through the Little Ice Age (LIA) for two valleys located in the north- and south-central Brooks range, Alaska. Moraine boulders from the Alapah Mountain moraines on the northern flank of the range indicate that the Itkillik III glaciation culminated by ~17 ka. This age is much older than previous estimates (~15-13 ka) and suggests a revision of the original late Pleistocene glacial chronology. This new Itkillik chronology requires substantial glacial retreat between ~27-23 ka, at the height of the northern hemisphere last glacial maximum (LGM). Due to their moisture sensitivity, expanded Arctic sea ice may have starved glaciers of precipitation during this time. Erratic boulders and scoured bedrock from several valleys in both the northern and southern Brooks Range show that deglaciation was underway by ~16 ka and glaciers retreated rapidly up valley to their Neoglacial limits, in some case by 14. 9 ℗ł 0. 8 ka. Sampled boulders from two Neoglacial moraines show that glaciers reached their maximum Holocene extent by 3. 2 ℗ł 0. 3 ka. In conjunction, these ages show that glaciers remained at or behind their Holocene maximum from ~14-3 ka. This means that Late Glacial (14-11 ka) or early to middle Holocene advances were either absent or less extensive than their Holocene maximum.

Therefore, glacial deposits are excellent tools for reconstructing past climates. The western United States exhibits an excellent record of glaciation, but ongoing work across the region shows complex and yetunexplained variation in timing and extent of deglaciation between different mountain ranges at the end of the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM). The Trinity Alps of the southern Klamath Mountains in Northern California contain an excellent record of Pleistocene glaciation which I use to fill a significant spatial gap in published glacial chronologies and to provide a bridge between the Sierra Nevada and the Cascades. The Trinity Alps Wilderness is a 2,130 sq. km. federally designated area located at 41.00° N, 123.00°W, approximately 60 km southwest of Mt. Shasta in Northern California. Glacial deposits in the Trinity Alps were located using Google Earth and previously published maps, and were confirmed in the field. Building on a series of previous expeditions, in the summer of 2015 twenty-four samples from five moraines were taken for 10Be exposure dating, as well as three samples from striated bedrock. Of these, six samples were selected for exposure age analysis: five from two early LGM moraines and one from an older moraine. These ages, in addition to twenty-four ages determined in a previous study, provide evidence for at least two stages of post-LGM glaciation of similar extent throughout the Trinity Alps: the first ending at 16.83 ± 1.85 ka, the second at 12.29 ± 1.23 ka. These ages correlate with the regional LGM (~17 ka) and the global Younger Dryas (~12 ka) cooling event, respectively. The moraine maps were then used to constrain results from a climate-driven 2D numerical model of glacier mass balance and flow. This model was used to determine the potential precipitation and temperature difference from modern climate that would generate the mapped glaciers. Comparison of the resulting paleoclimate curves with nearby proxies and global climate models suggest that an approximate 5.5°C decrease in temperature and 0 to 25% increase in precipitation drove LGM glaciation in the region. Additionally, these results suggest that a similarly wet but slightly warmer-than-LGM climate drove a regionally asynchronous re-advance in the Trinity Alps linked with the Younger Dryas cooling event.

The growth axis of stalagmite BCC-025 was sampled for ð18O, ð13C, and Sr/Ca of the calcite. A crude age model was developed using two Th-230 ages, from the top (~490 kyrBP) and bottom (~630 kyrBP) of the stalagmite. A more elaborate age model for stalagmite growth was developed using established marine isotope stage (MIS 13/14, 14/15, 15/16) boundaries. Overall, the MIS boundaries approximate the locations of major hiatuses along the axis of stalagmite growth. The proxy records developed from BCC-025 reveal less covariation and overall diminished absolute ranges when compared to younger records, potentially, because the glacial/interglacial variability of the early-Late Pleistocene is less than that of the Late Pleistocene. Despite the need for better age constraints, the observations and interpretations provide an initial window into the drivers and extent of climate change before the more pronounced swings of glacial/interglacial variability of the Late Pleistocene.

Book excerpt: The Pleistocene period was a time of Earth's History marked by 100-kyr paced glacial-interglacial cycles and dominated by the influence of polar glaciation that stimulated Earth system feedbacks. Climate archives that grew during the Pleistocene thus provide the opportunity to explore past climate variability during a time of known global forcings and when distinct climate transitions occurred. Other than ice cores - one of the most robust terrestrial climate archives used by the paleoclimate community - speleothem-based paleoclimate reconstructions provide some of the highest-resolution continental climate records. This is due to their ability to be precisely dated, relatively continuous growth potential that is uninterrupted by surficial erosional processes, and because they form within carbonate (karst) rocks which are located in a variety of locations from the low- to high-latitudes, and thus not restricted to one geographic location. For this dissertation, I use a collection of speleothem samples from a southwestern Wisconsin cave, Cave of the Mounds, to reconstruct paleoclimate for portions of the last 250,000 years. This dissertation seeks to (1) resolve high-resolution oxygen isotope (Îþ18O) records representative of mid-continental North America during former glacial and interglacial periods through the use of specialized imaging and mass spectrometry techniques, and (2) provide data that will characterize climate variability and regional climate response to distinct global forcings in a relatively data-sparse region of the world. Except for Chapter 1, which focuses on U-Th dating methods of speleothems, all chapters of this dissertation use specialized imaging (confocal laser fluorescent microscopy, CLFM) and mass spectrometry (secondary ion mass spectrometer, SIMS) techniques to produce high-resolution Îþ18O records during different time periods of the last 250,000 years. Each chapter focuses on a different time period of the last 250,000 years, specifically the Last Glacial Period (70-50 ka, respectively; Chapter 2), the Late Holocene (3-2 ka; Chapter 3), the Last Interglacial Period (122-118 ka, respectively; Chapter 4), and the Penultimate Interglacial Period (230-218 ka, respectively; Chapter 5).

Book excerpt: It is uncertain as to how the Greenland Ice Sheet (GrIS) will respond to future climate changes. One means of assessing the sensitivity of the GrIS to projected climate conditions is to determine its response to past conditions. I reconstructed late glacial and Holocene (~15 ka-present) GrIS extents in the Nunatarssuaq, northwestern Greenland. I applied geomorphic mapping, 10Be surface exposure dating and 14C dating of subfossil plants to determine a chronology of past GrIS extents. I also analyzed sediment cores from a glacially fed lake. 10Be ages of boulders and bedrock exposed during deglaciation from the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM; ~26-19.5 ka) are apparently old due to 10Be inherited from prior periods of exposure. The youngest 10Be age (~15 ka) may also contain inherited 10Be but approximates the time of deglaciation. Subfossil plants transported to the GrIS margin on shear planes date to ~4.6 cal ka BP and indicate a less extensive GrIS during middle Holocene time. Geomorphic mapping documents higher levels of Nordsø, a glacial lake dammed by a more extensive GrIS margin. I constrain the age of this GrIS extent to ~3-2 ka using 14C ages of in situ subfossil plants on nunataks and 10Be ages of boulders on the drift deposited during the advance. A fresh drift occurs ~30-50 m beyond the present GrIS margin. 10Be ages of this fresh drift range from 2.2 to 0.5 ka. I interpret the youngest 10Be age (~0.5 ka) as the time the drift was exposed. 14C ages of in situ subfossil plants indicate that the GrIS was at or behind its present margin at AD ~1662-1897. I compare my record of GrIS extents to other glacial fluctuations and climate records. I find that the GrIS margin in Nunatarssuaq fluctuated at similar times as local ice masses and other GrIS margins. The middle Holocene GrIS recession occurred during relatively warm conditions registered by regional climate records and the late Holocene GrIS advances occurred during cooler conditions. I also document asynchronous GrIS margin fluctuations in Nunatarssuaq. These require further investigation to determine whether they were influenced by climate conditions or ice dynamics.

Radiocarbon dating of organic material incorporated in the younger Katolinat till and in adjacent peat and lake sediments suggests that alpine glaciers on the northern Alaska Peninsula briefly expanded between ca. 8500 and 10,000 years B.P. Stratigraphic relationships and radiocarbon dates suggest an age for the older Ukak drift near the Pleistocene-Holocene boundary between ca. 10,000 and 12,000 years B.P. We suggest that rapid deglaciation following deposition of the Iliuk drift occurred ca. 13,000-12,000 years B.P. in response to large increases in global atmospheric greenhouse gas content, including C02. Short-term decreases in these concentrations, as recorded in polar ice cores, may be linked with brief periods of glacier expansion during the latest Pleistocene and early Holocene. A transient episode of low solar intensity may also have occurred during parts of the early Holocene. Rapid environmental changes and glacial fluctuations on the Alaska Peninsula may have been in response to transient changes in the concentration of atmospheric greenhouse gases and solar intensity.

Book excerpt: The island of South Georgia, along with a number of other smaller islands, is part of a microcontinent surrounded by oceanic crust in the Atlantic sector of the sub-Antarctic. Oceanographically, South Georgia lies within the Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC), the broad oceanic current system that is driven by the Southern Hemisphere Westerlies (SHW) and climatically isolates the Antarctic continent from the warmer Northern Hemisphere. Its location in the middle of the ACC and its isolation from continental influences makes South Georgia a sensitive region, where climate changes are registered earlier than on the more thermally isolated Antarctic continent. So far, however, the timing and extent of the Last Glacial Maximum on South Georgia have not been completely resolved, mostly because radiocarbon dated sediment investigations are missing. This is mainly due to the lack of marine geological studies on the continental shelf of the southern side of the island, which is climatically much harsher and therefore less accessible than the northern side. This information, however, is important to create and evaluate reliable climate and ice sheet models. This thesis, based on the investigations of sediment cores, sediment echosounder profiles and high-resolution bathymetry data, closes important knowledge gaps in the King Haakon Trough System and Drygalski Fjord System on the southern shelf of South Georgia. For the latter, the radiocarbon-dated sediments reveal an extensive ice cap before 30 ka BP during the Local Last Glacial Maximum. In the King Haakon Trough System, the bathymetric and sediment echo-graphic mapping of this thesis also reveal shelf-wide glaciation, possibly related to the last glacial period. Furthermore, this thesis investigates the subsequent deglaciation and the traces left by climate variability and its drivers within the sedimentary records in the two cross-shelf troughs. The results show that the southern shelf environments were ice-free since before the Antarctic Cold Reversal and thus exposed to currents at least since the start of the Holocene. These likely reacted to climate fluctuations of the present interglacial and, therefore, impacted trough sedimentation. Thus, this thesis does not only provide evidence for past ice-extent, which is crucial for benchmarking modelling approaches, but also gives further insight into the Holocene climate variability and sedimentary processes around South Georgia, potentially even archiving shelf-intruding behaviour of the nearby Southern Antarctic Circumpolar Current Front (SACCF) for at least the last 8 ka BP.

Book excerpt: A series of environmental changes from late-glacial ice recession through the early Holocene are revealed in a 7000-yr-long record of pollen, charcoal, geochemistry, and stable isotopes from Blacktail Pond, a closed-basin lake in Yellowstone National Park. Prior to 11,500 cal yr BP, cool conditions dominated, fire activity was low, and alpine tundra and Picea parkland grew on the landscape. A step-like climate change to warm summer conditions occurred at 11,500 cal yr BP. In response, fire activity increased facilitating a transition from Picea parkland to closed Pinus forest. From 11,500 to 8280 cal yr BP, warm summers and abundant moisture mostly likely from high winter snowfall supported closed Pinus contorta forests. Cooler drier summer conditions prevailed beginning 8280 cal yr BP due to decreased summer insolation and winter snowpack, and lower parkland developed. The timing of vegetation change in the Blacktail Pond record is similar to other low- and middle-elevation sites in the northern Rocky Mountains during the late-glacial period, suggesting local plant communities responded to regional-scale climate change; however, the timing of vegetation changes was spatially variable during the early and middle Holocene due to the varying influences of strengthened summer monsoons and subtropical high on regional precipitation patterns.

Book excerpt: Over the last decade, numerous Paleo-Indian sites have been identified at Yellowstone Lake, Wyoming, North America?s largest, high-elevation natural lake. This study presents results of University of Montana research between 2009 and 2016 at 25 sites that provide information regarding human use of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem during the Late Pleistocene-Early Holocene. Despite the recovery of Clovis evidence at Yellowstone Lake, Early Paleoindians rarely visited the region, likely due to difficult post-glacial environmental conditions. After 10,000 BP, upon ameliorating climate changes, Late Paleoindian Cody complex hunter-gatherers increased use of the lake area. In order to better understand regional travel patterns, this study compares lithic raw material and tool use between the Fishing Bridge Peninsula and Osprey Beach Late Paleoindian Cody complex sites. The paper?s conclusion discusses the implications of the research on Paleoindian use of the high-elevation Rocky Mountain region.
