Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Off-body flow visualizations and fluid velocity measurements are conducted in a supersonic vortex flow. Three-dimensional laser velocimetry measurements are made in the leeward flowfield over a simple sharp-edged delta wing with 75 degree sweep angle. Tests are conducted at Mach 1.9 and Reynolds number of 2.4 x 10(exp 6) based on model root chord. Measurements are made at 40% and 80% chord positions for 20 and 30 degree angles of attack and at 40% chord for 35 degrees. Mean velocities and turbulence intensities are measured on the five planes. Measurement accuracy is discussed in detail. The measurements define the location of the vortex core and provide the flowfield velocities surrounding the vortex. The difficulties inherent with seeding high velocity vortex flows are discussed ... Laser Velocimetry Measurement of Vortical Flowfields.

Book Synopsis Three Component Doppler Global Velocimeter Measurements of the Flow Above a Delta Wing by : James F. Meyers
Download or read book Three Component Doppler Global Velocimeter Measurements of the Flow Above a Delta Wing written by James F. Meyers and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 6 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new measurement technique is being developed by NASA to measure off-surface flow fields. This method, Doppler global velocimetry, will allow qualification of complex three-dimensional flow fields at video camera rates. The entire flow field structure within a selected plane is measured simultaneously rather than by scanned, point-by-point measurements using conventional laser velocimetry. To assess the capability of this new technique, three component velocity measurements of the vortical flow field above a thin 75 degree delta wing were made in the NASA Langley Basic Aerodynamics Research Tunnel. Measurements were made of the flow field at the 70-percent chord locations at angles-of-attack of 20.5-and 40.0-degrees to investigate unburst and burst vortices. For comparison, previous fringe-type laser velocimeter measurements of the flow field at the same conditions are included.

This book was released on 1983 with total page 13 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Compressibility effects on the lee-side vortical flow field of a delta wing at incidence were studied using laser doppler velocimetry. The tests covered the Mach number range from 0.18 to 0.80; both axial and circumferential velocity components were measured. It was found that the axial velocity excess observed at low Mach numbers became an axial velocity deficit at Mach numbers above 0.6. Strong asymmetry was observed in the circumferential velocity distribution at the higher Mach numbers. A flow picture including an embedded shock wave is proposed as physical explanation of the observed compressibility effects. (Author).
Book Synopsis Laser Velocimetry in Fluid Mechanics by : Alain Boutier
Download or read book Laser Velocimetry in Fluid Mechanics written by Alain Boutier and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2013-01-09 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In fluid mechanics, velocity measurement is fundamental in order to improve the behavior knowledge of the flow. Velocity maps help us to understand the mean flow structure and its fluctuations, in order to further validate codes. Laser velocimetry is an optical technique for velocity measurements; it is based on light scattering by tiny particles assumed to follow the flow, which allows the local fluid flow velocity and its fluctuations to be determined. It is a widely used non-intrusive technique to measure velocities in fluid flows, either locally or in a map. This book presents the various techniques of laser velocimetry, as well as their specific qualities: local measurements or in plane maps, mean or instantaneous values, 3D measurements. Flow seeding with particles is described with currently used products, as well as the appropriate aerosol generators. Post-processing of data allows us to extract synthetic information from measurements and to perform comparisons with results issued from CFD codes. The principles and characteristics of the different available techniques, all based on the scattering of light by tiny particles embedded in the flow, are described in detail; showing how they deliver different information, either locally or in a map, mean values and turbulence characteristics.

This book was released on 2018-07 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Results from an experimental investigation documenting the flowfield over a 75 deg swept delta wing at an angle-of-attack of 20.5 deg are presented. Results obtained include surface flow visualization, off-body flow visualization, and detailed flowfield surveys for various Reynolds numbers. Flowfield surveys at Reynolds numbers of 0.5, 1.0, and 1.5 million based on the root chord were conducted with both a Pitot pressure probe and a 5-hole pressure probe; and 3-component laser velocimeter surveys were conducted at a Reynolds number of 1.0 million. The Pitot pressure surveys were obtained at 5 chordwise stations, the 5-hole probe surveys were obtained at 3 chordwise stations and the laser velocimeter surveys were obtained at one station. The results confirm the classical roll up of the flow into a pair of primary vortices over the delta wing. The velocity measurements indicate that Reynolds number has little effect on the global structure of the flowfield for the Reynolds number range investigated. Measurements of the non-dimensional axial velocity in the core of the vortex indicate a jet like flow with values greater than twice freestream. Comparisons between velocity measurements from the 5-hole pressure probe and the laser velocimeter indicate that the pressure probe does a reasonable job of measuring the flowfield quantities where the velocity gradients in the flowfield are low. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the astrophysical scale of a swirling spiral galaxy, through the geophysical scale of a hurricane, down to the subatomic scale of elementary particles, vortical motion and vortex dynamics have played a profound role in our understanding of the physical world. Kuchemann referred to vortex dynamics as "the sinews and muscles of fluid motion. " In order to update our understanding of vortex dominated flows, NASA Langley Research Center and the Institute for Computer Applications in Science and Engineering (ICASE) conducted a workshop during July 9-11, 1985. The subject was broadly divided into five overlapping topics vortex dynamics, vortex breakdown, massive separation, vortex shedding from sharp leading edges and conically separated flows. Some of the experts in each of these areas were invited to provide an overview of the subject. This volume is the proceedings of the workshop and contains the latest, theoretical, numerical, and experimental work in the above-mentioned areas. Leibovich, Widnall, Moore and Sirovich discussed topics on the fundamentals of vortex dynamics, while Keller and Hafez treated the problem of vortex break down phenomena; the contributions of Smith, Davis and LeBalleur were in the area of massive separation and inviscid-viscous interactions, while those of Cheng, Hoeijmakers and Munnan dealt with sharp-leading-edge vortex flows; and Fiddes and Marconi represented the category of conical separated flows.

This book was released on 2003-01-01 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The vortical flow over the suction side of a 650 sweep delta wing at high angles of attack is investigated in the University of Washington water tunnel using digital particle image velocimetry (DPIV). The method is first validated and then used to qualitatively and quantitatively describe the development of the leading edge vortex (LEV) both upstream and downstream of vortex breakdown. The circulation and azimuthal velocity profile in the vortex are measured and reveal that the maximum circulation of the LEV increases nearly linearly in the downstream direction up to the point of vortex breakdown. Circulation and velocity measurements in the solid-body rotational part of the LEV core, however, reveal that once the core is formed near the apex of the wing, the circulation there remains constant until just prior to breakdown, and no further vorticity is added to the core from the shear layer. The secondary vortex is found to be the key player in separating the primary vortex core from the shear layer. This model of the flow field contradicts the generally accepted conical nature of delta wing flow. Current vortex breakdown suppression methods are analyzed in light of this new model. A numerical simulation based on the vortex filament method is also used to further the self-induction theory of vortex breakdown.
