Book excerpt: We report our work on diode laser frequency stabilization emitting near 850 and 1300 nanometers. In first, we demonstrate a single-mode operation from an initially multimode diode laser with an optical feedback on an external mirror.Secondly, a confocal Fabry-Perot cavity is used to feedback the beam from the diode laser and provide resonant optical stabilization of the semiconductor laser. We present a detailed theoretical analysis of the static and dynamic frequency noise power spectrum of the coupled cavity laser field. Experimentally we achieve static frequency noise reduction of 50-60 dB and obtain a dramatic reduction of the laser line with from 20 MHz to a few kHz.The frequency tenability of these coupled cavity diode lasers are achieved by a double servo-loop system and we have obtained a continuously frequency tuning of 7 GHz without laser spectral purity degradation.Applications of these techniques include optical pumping Cesium docks and frequency synthesis in the visible.

Book excerpt: The demands for higher performance for modern aircraft have led the wind tunnel community, which is an integral link in the design process, to develop more refined and cost effective measuring techniques. These technologies have gradually matured from laboratory novelties into instruments regularly used in aerodynamic testing. The development of these modern measurement techniques has greatly extended the capability and accuracy of the classical methods for measurement techniques and provided better insight into flow physics. This Symposium provided a forum for active researchers to address the state-of-the-art, to exchange experiences and ideas, and for the practitioners to obtain an overview of the technology and learn how to appy it.

Appeared in the mid 60’s as solid-state alternatives for liquid dye lasers, they recently gained a new dimension after the demonstration of organic semiconductor lasers in the 90's. More recently, new perspectives appeared at the nanoscale, with organic polariton and surface plasmon lasers. After a brief reminder to laser physics, a first chapter exposes what makes organic solid-state organic lasers specific. The laser architectures used in organic lasers are then reviewed, with a state-of-the-art review of the performances of devices with regard to output power, threshold, lifetime, beam quality etc. A survey of the recent trends in the field is given, highlighting the latest developments with a special focus on the challenges remaining for achieving direct electrical pumping of organic semiconductor lasers. A last chapter covers the applications of organic solid-state lasers.

Book excerpt: Presenting a comprehensive account of oscillator phase noise and frequency stability, this practical text is both mathematically rigorous and accessible. An in-depth treatment of the noise mechanism is given, describing the oscillator as a physical system, and showing that simple general laws govern the stability of a large variety of oscillators differing in technology and frequency range. Inevitably, special attention is given to amplifiers, resonators, delay lines, feedback, and flicker (1/f) noise. The reverse engineering of oscillators based on phase-noise spectra is also covered, and end-of-chapter exercises are given. Uniquely, numerous practical examples are presented, including case studies taken from laboratory prototypes and commercial oscillators, which allow the oscillator internal design to be understood by analyzing its phase-noise spectrum. Based on tutorials given by the author at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, international IEEE meetings, and in industry, this is a useful reference for academic researchers, industry practitioners, and graduate students in RF engineering and communications engineering.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive and pedagogical account of the various methods used in the quantum theory of finite systems, including molecular, atomic, nuclear, and particle phenomena. Covering both background material and advanced topics and including nearly 200 problems, Quantum Theory of Finite Systems has been designed to serve primarily as a text and will also prove useful as a reference in research. The first of the book's four parts introduces the basic mathematical apparatus: second quantization, canonical transformations, Wick theorems and the resulting diagram expansions, and oscillator models. The second part presents mean field approximations and the recently developed path integral methods for the quantization of collective modes. Part three develops perturbation theory in terms of both time-dependent Feynman diagrams and time-independent Goldstone diagrams. A fourth part discusses variational methods based on correlated wavefunctions, including spin correlations. The approximation schemes are formulated for fermions and bosons at eigher zero or non-zero temperature. Although the formalism developed applies to both finite and infinite systems, the book stresses those aspects of the theory that are specific to the description of finite systems. Thus special attention is given to mean field approximations, the ensuing broken symmetries, and the associated collective motions such as rotations. Conversely, some specific features of systems with infinite numbers of degrees of freedom (such as the thermodynamic limit, critical phenomena, and the elimination of ultraviolet divergencies) are deliberately omitted. Jean-Paul Blaizot and Georges Ripka are associated with the Centre d'Etudes Nucleaires de Saclay.
