A data-gathering system, using the optical technique of laser speckle interferometry, was used to capture deformation of bodies under load on a film record. The speckle interferograms were analyzed by a computer-aided scanning system. A mathematical and geometrical interpretation of interferometric data is presented. The interferograms were analyzed at strategic image points on the test specimens to obtain displacement data which was used to calculate strains, shearing strains, and correlated with shearing stresses. Anisotropic elastic constants such as Young's modulus, shear modulus, and Poisson's ratio were calculated. A full-field aperture analysis was used as a tool to qualitatively observe the free edge effects of shear specimens. The techniques presented in this report are significant because full-field or discrete information can be obtained from any point rather than averaging data from a small region. (Author).

Book excerpt: One of the most common methods of experimentally determining residual stresses is Blind Hole Drilling (BHD). A new method which is a thermo-optical analog to BHD is being developed. This method uses local heating to anneal a tiny spot and uses laser speckle interferometry to measure the strain that results. This strain is used to determine the state of stress prior to heating. The peak temperatures are on the order of 200 Celsius so that for most metals, there will be no changes in phase or other material properties except for a slight reduction in yield stress. Preliminary experiments with type 304 stainless steel were performed using resistance heating. The experimental results were in excellent agreement with finite element model predictions of the process. Subsequently, the resistance heating was replaced with laser heating. The heat input (22.5 Watt peak) from a small sealed radio frequency excited Carbon Dioxide laser was used. In order to both control the heating temperature and efficiently couple the infrared photons from the laser into the test specimen, a substance known as Liquid Temperature Indicating Paint was used. Without this substance the laser power would be so large as to make this approach impractical. Furthermore the measurement and control for the heat input would be very complicated. Using this laser heating approach was successful in obtaining similar results to those obtained in other work. Since this laser based technique is a thermo-optical analog to blind hole drilling a simple stress model is required to interpret the measured results. This simple stress model is presented. As in BHD, the simple model must be modified by empirical coefficients to be useful. These empirical coefficients are determined by experimentation and/or numerical analysis.

A simple lumped parameter model is presented to provide a description of the method. This description is followed by presentations of the results of finite element analyses and experimental results with uniaxial test specimens. Excellent agreement between the experiments and the computer analyses were obtained.

Book excerpt: This report investigates the application of speckle interferometry for the measurement of strain when a material is subjected to various loading rates and elevated temperature conditions. The Medium Strain Rate Facility at the U.S. Army Materials Technology Laboratory was used to conduct uniaxial tension tests at strain rates of .00001/sec to .1/sec, temperatures up to 250 deg F and heating rates of 250 deg F/sec. Strain was measured by laser speckle interferometry technique and strain gages, the results of both methods were compared. Laser speckle interferometry was also used for the measurement of strain at large deformation, i.e., necking region of tensile specimens. The laser speckle interferometry results are in agreement with strain gage results at strain rates up to .1/sec for temperatures up to 250 deg F. This investigation also indicated laser speckle interferometry would be an excellent noncontact localized strain measuring device for adverse conditions if the following drawbacks were overcome. When using the ruby laser system, only one stress-strain data point can be obtained, the present system is not suited for strain rates over .1/sec and no results can be obtained if the specimen is heated to a point that it begins to emit intense red light. The shortcomings of laser speckle interferometry could be overcome by using another laser and data acquisition system. Stress analysis and measurement is an integral part of the design and management of structures, and is used in a wide range of engineering areas. There are two main types of stress analyses – the first is conceptual where the structure does not yet exist and the analyst has more freedom to define geometry, materials, loads etc – generally such analysis is undertaken using numerical methods such as the finite element method. The second is where the structure (or a prototype) exists, and so some parameters are known. Others though, such as wind loading or environmental conditions will not be completely known and yet may profoundly affect the structure. These problems are generally handled by an ad hoc combination of experimental and analytical methods. This book therefore tackles one of the most common challenges facing engineers – how to solve a stress analysis problem when all of the required information is not available. Its central concern is to establish formal methods for including measurements as part of the complete analysis of such problems by presenting a new approach to the processing of experimental data and thus to experimentation itself. In addition, engineers using finite element methods will be able to extend the range of problems they can solve (and thereby the range of applications they can address) using the methods developed here.
