Book excerpt: The report describes an experiment to obtain optical data for an unsteady, under-expanded axisymmetric jet issuing from a one inch diameter tube at supersonic velocity. A technique is described which has been found useful to obtain sequence photographic data for such transient processes. In this technique, a bleachable absorber is used to generate multiple laser pulses so that instantaneous images of the laser-illuminated event are swept onto a fixed film drum with a mirror rotating at approximately 16.2 mm/microsecond. (Comments on our experience with high voltage double-pulsing a Pockels cell are also included). Sequence (multiple frame) laser interferograms made by backlighting aMach-Zehnder optical interferometer used to observe the flow are shown and discussed. Single frame spark shadow photographs which give qualitative support to the interferograms are also shown. (Author).

The effect of these asymmetries on projectile yawing motion near first maximum yaw is measured in a ballistics range. The measured data is extrapolated back to the muzzle, and the projectile angular velocity upon penetration of the muzzle blast is evaluated. The projectile linear velocity imparted by the asymmetric gas dynamic loadings is estimated using the hypersonic equivalence principle. The total jump of the projectile trajectory due to both angular and linear velocity is computed and compared with measured values. (Author).

Book excerpt: The phase-contrast microscope of Zernike may be scaled in size and combined with 'giant pulse' ruby-laser illumination to make possible the observation of macroscopic moving tenuous objects, such as jets, shock waves and plasmas. The resulting instrument, referred to as the Laser Phase Macroscope (L.P.M.), has performance similar to that of an optical interferometer operated in the single-fringe mode. The operation of the phase macroscope is treated theoretically, first heuristically and then by diffraction integrals. Conditions for optimum imaging are derived. The 'phase plate' of Zernike is modified for use with focused laser illumination, and parameters for optimum imaging are given. Quite different mirrors are required for the full range of interesting plasmas accessible to the L.P.M. The experimental model is described. Phasograms of weak and strong shocks in air and argon down to .5 mm Hg pressure are shown. Rayleigh-Taylor instability behind the shock is observed. Gas jets of various refractivities are also used as test objects. Phasograms of vacuum sparks producing jets of ablated electrode material are shown. Many objects studied are invisible to schlieren photography using the same illumination and optics. (Author).

The success ratio was achieved despite the fact that control of pulse separation, number of pulses, duration of lasing action, and pulse-to-pulse intensity was not precise. There was more success with the passive technique than with an electronic, high voltage technique--described in the report--for multiple Q-switching of a Pockels cell.

The technique is applied to the flow from the muzzle of an M-16 rifle firing standard ball ammunition. Data is presented both as full discontinuity contours and as discontinuity trajectories along the axis of symmetry. The former indicate the details of muzzle jet-free air blast coupling; while the latter demonstrate the applicability of analytical techniques to the flow field. Additionally, a data reduction scheme is proposed which permits the inference of property values in the flow based on a combination of empirical and analytical techniques.
