Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A work on turbulent premixed combustion is important because of increased concern about the environmental impact of combustion and the search for new combustion concepts and technologies. An improved understanding of lean fuel turbulent premixed flames must play a central role in the fundamental science of these new concepts. Lean premixed flames have the potential to offer ultra-low emission levels, but they are notoriously susceptible to combustion oscillations. Thus, sophisticated control measures are inevitably required. The editors' intent is to set out the modeling aspects in the field of turbulent premixed combustion. Good progress has been made on this topic, and this cohesive volume contains contributions from international experts on various subtopics of the lean premixed flame problem.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The hydroxyl radical is known to be one of the most important intermediate species in the combustion processes. The hydroxyl radical has also been considered a dominant oxidizer of soot particles in flames. In this investigation the hydroxyl concentration profiles in sooting diffusion flames were measured by the laser-saturated fluorescence (LSF) method. The temperature distributions in the flames were measured by the two-line LSF technique and by thermocouple. In the sooting region the OH fluorescence was too weak to make accurate temperature measurements. The hydroxyl fluorescence profiles for all four flames presented herein show that the OH fluorescence intensities peaked near the flame front. The OH fluorescence intensity dropped sharply toward the dark region of the flame and continued declining to the sooting region. The OH fluorescence profiles also indicate that the OH fluorescence decreased with increasing height in the flames for all flames investigated. Varying the oxidizer composition resulted in a corresponding variation in the maximum OH concentration and the flame temperature. Furthermore, it appears that the maximum OH concentration for each flame increased with increasing flame temperature.

Book excerpt: An attempt to apply Hydroxyl radical laser induced fluorescence temperature measurements to high pressure solid propellant flames is described. The requirement for broadband spectral collection is discussed. In high pressure propellant flames of AP, HMX, and AN, the broadband detection decreased the light rejection of the system to the point that scattered laser light overwhelmed the OH LIF signal and rendered the measurement unsuccessful. Earlier CN and OH LIF experiments using narrowband data collection were successful, allowing radical profiles to be obtained. The difference between the two sets of experiments illustrate the need for high light rejection efficiencies in any laser-diagnostic measurement in the highly scattering environment of a propellant flame. Keywords: Solid rocket propellants, Combustion spectroscopy, Combustion diagnostics. (aw).

Book excerpt: Extensively using experimental and numerical illustrations, CombustionPhenomena: Selected Mechanisms of Flame Formation, Propagation, and Extinction provides a comprehensive survey of the fundamental processes of flame formation, propagation, and extinction. Taking you through the stages of combustion, leading experts visually display, mathematically explain, and clearly theorize on important physical topics of combustion. After a historical introduction to the field, they discuss combustion chemistry, flammability limits, and spark ignition. They also study counterflow twin-flame configuration, flame in a vortex core, the propagation characteristics of edge flames, instabilities, and tulip flames. In addition, the book describes flame extinction in narrow channels, global quenching of premixed flames by turbulence, counterflow premixed flame extinction limits, the interaction of flames with fluids in rotating vessels, and turbulent flames. The final chapter explores diffusion flames as well as combustion in spark- and compression-ignition engines. It also examines the transition from deflagration to detonation, along with the detonation wave structure. With downloadable resources of images that beautifully illustrate a range of combustion phenomena, this book facilitates a practical understanding of the processes occurring in the conception, spread, and extinguishment of a flame. It will help you on your way to finding solutions to real issues encountered in transportation, power generation, industrial processes, chemical engineering, and fire and explosion hazards.

This book was released on 2011 with total page 197 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two advances to tracer-based planar laser-induced fluorescence (PLIF) diagnostics are presented in this work. The first improvement is the development of a 3-pentanone fluorescence quantum yield (FQY) database and model for a wide range of conditions in support of quantitative PLIF diagnostics. In addition, this work presents a sensitive, time-resolved tracer-based PLIF diagnostic, accomplished by using a continuous-wave (CW) laser with the high-FQY tracer toluene. Because of its ease of use and desirable photophysical properties, PLIF diagnostics using 3-pentanone as a tracer are common, particularly for internal combustion engine (ICE) diagnostics. Thus, there is a need for 3-pentanone FQY measurements and modeling over a wide range of temperatures, pressures, and excitation wavelengths. For insight into the collisionless process in the FQY model, measurements were made in 3-pentanone vapor at low-pressures across a range of temperatures using a flowing cell. Laser excitation with 248, 266, 277, 308 nm wavelengths were utilized, and Rayleigh scattering of the laser beam was used to calibrate the optical efficiency of the collection optics and detector. This low-pressure data allows calculation of the 3-pentanone fluorescence rate and non-radiative de-excitation rate in the fluorescence model. The vibrational relaxation cascade parameter for 3-pentanone collisions was also determined. Measurements of 3-pentanone FQY were also made over a range of temperatures and pressures relevant to diagnostic applications, and, in particular, combined high-temperature and high-pressure conditions applicable to internal combustion engines (ICE). These data were collected in a custom-built optical cell capable of simultaneous high-pressure and high-temperature conditions. The behavior of the FQY in nitrogen for temperatures up to 745 K and in air up to 570 K was examined for pressures from 1 to 25 bar. These data were used to further optimize the parameters in the FQY model representing collisional processes. The large quantity of data with 308 nm excitation allowed optimization of the nitrogen quenching rate, and data in air were used to optimize the oxygen quenching rate. These data were also used to optimize the vibrational relaxation parameters for nitrogen and oxygen. The model with the updated parameters is consistent with the data collected in the current work, as well as with fluorescence measurements made in optical ICEs up to 1100 K and 28 bar. Another area of tracer-based PLIF diagnostics development is time-resolved imaging. Because PLIF diagnostics are often performed using pulsed lasers, the time resolution of measurements is limited to the pulse rate of laser. Use of a high-powered visible laser with an off-the-shelf cavity frequency doubler is shown to produce a moderate-power CW beam in the ultraviolet wavelength regime. Application of this CW source to excite toluene, a high-FQY tracer, yields a sensitive, time-resolved tracer-based PLIF diagnostic. Fluctuation detection limits for tracer mole fraction were investigated by applying the diagnostic to an atmospheric temperature and pressure nitrogen jet seeded with 4% toluene, and detection limits of better than 1% of the maximum toluene mole fraction were achieved for detection of fluorescence signal at a point, along a line, and over a plane. The diagnostic was also demonstrated on a turbulent jet for line and planar detection and demonstrated the potential for toluene time-resolved PLIF diagnostics with CW lasers.

Book excerpt: This book contains selected papers prepared for the NATO Advanced Study Institute on "Unsteady Combustion", which was held in Praia da Granja, Portugal, 6-17 September 1993. Approximately 100 delegates from 14 countries attended. The Institute was the most recent in a series beginning with "Instrumentation for Combustion and Flow in Engines", held in Vimeiro, Portugal 1987 and followed by "Combusting Flow Diagnostics" conducted in Montechoro, Portugal in 1990. Together, these three Institutes have covered a wide range of experimental and theoretical topics arising in the research and development of combustion systems with particular emphasis on gas-turbine combustors and internal combustion engines. The emphasis has evolved roughly from instrumentation and experimental techniques to the mixture of experiment, theory and computational work covered in the present volume. As the title of this book implies, the chief aim of this Institute was to provide a broad sampling of problems arising with time-dependent behaviour in combustors. In fact, of course, that intention encompasses practically all possibilities, for "steady" combustion hardly exists if one looks sufficiently closely at the processes in a combustion chamber. The point really is that, apart from the excellent paper by Bahr (Chapter 10) discussing the technology of combustors for aircraft gas turbines, little attention is directed to matters of steady performance. The volume is divided into three parts devoted to the subjects of combustion-induced oscillations; combustion in internal combustion engines; and experimental techniques and modelling.
