This book was released on 1996-09-19 with total page 896 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Cambridge History of Latin American Literature is by far the most comprehensive work of its kind ever written. Its three volumes cover the whole sweep of Latin American literature (including Brazilian) from pre-Colombian times to the present, and contain chapters on Latin American writing in the USA. Volume 3 is devoted partly to the history of Brazilian literature, from the earliest writing through the colonial period and the Portuguese-language traditions of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries; and partly also to an extensive bibliographical section in which annotated reading lists relating to the chapters in all three volumes of The Cambridge History of Latin American Literature are presented. These bibliographies are a unique feature of the History, further enhancing its immense value as a reference work.

Book Synopsis Pedro Alcántara. En el Vórtice de las segunda mitad del siglo XX by : Julián Malatesta
Download or read book Pedro Alcántara. En el Vórtice de las segunda mitad del siglo XX written by Julián Malatesta and published by Universidad del Valle. This book was released on 2024-08-09 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Pedro Alcántara is situated in the pivotal vortex of the second half of the 20th century, where Latin American arts and literature display a special revitalizing thrust and where militancy of the creators faces the atrocities of the imperialr wars, the baleful dictatorships that darkened the sky of this young continent, and the endemic forms of violence that are a blindfold for the spirit. Addressing Alcántaras work oblíges one to place it in accordance to that rich and contradictory context of thought and history, allowing his work, as a man of culture, to find a more complex explanation that contributes, to the understanding of his inquiry and of his a esthetic scopes.

Book Synopsis To Defend the Revolution Is to Defend Culture by : Rebecca Gordon-Nesbitt
Download or read book To Defend the Revolution Is to Defend Culture written by Rebecca Gordon-Nesbitt and published by PM Press. This book was released on 2015-09-01 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Grounded in painstaking research, To Defend the Revolution Is to Defend Culture revisits the circumstances which led to the arts being embraced at the heart of the Cuban Revolution. Introducing the main protagonists to the debate, this previously untold story follows the polemical twists and turns that ensued in the volatile atmosphere of the 1960s and ’70s. The picture that emerges is of a struggle for dominance between Soviet-derived approaches and a uniquely Cuban response to the arts under socialism. The latter tendency, which eventually won out, was based on the principles of Marxist humanism. As such, this book foregrounds emancipatory understandings of culture. To Defend the Revolution Is to Defend Culture takes its title from a slogan – devised by artists and writers at a meeting in October 1960 and adopted by the First National Congress of Writers and Artists the following August – which sought to highlight the intrinsic importance of culture to the Revolution. Departing from popular top-down conceptions of Cuban policy-formation, this book establishes the close involvement of the Cuban people in cultural processes and the contribution of Cuba’s artists and writers to the policy and praxis of the Revolution. Ample space is dedicated to discussions that remain hugely pertinent to those working in the cultural field, such as the relationship between art and ideology, engagement and autonomy, form and content. As the capitalist world struggles to articulate the value of the arts in anything other than economic terms, this book provides us with an entirely different way of thinking about culture and the policies underlying it.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The meaning of dreams is one of the most fascinating topics of discussion and controversy since ancient times. The questions, Where do dreams come from? and How do dreams originate?, have had multiple answers in different times. For ancient civilizations, dreams were a form of communication with the gods. Some argue that they lack meaning, and for others, dreams are a reflection of our deepest desires, influence our behaviorthey are sources of inspiration and help us to solve problems. This book provides a global vision of dreams, beginning with the interpretation of ancient civilizations. Chapters dedicated to dreams in painting, in cinematography and, fundamentally, in literature. One chapter is devoted to the interpretation of dreams according to Freud and another to creativity through dreams that inspired inventions, novels, poetry, and musical pieces. The study of dreams by the neurosciences is also discussed.
Book Synopsis Otherness in Hispanic Culture by : Teresa Fernandez Ulloa
Download or read book Otherness in Hispanic Culture written by Teresa Fernandez Ulloa and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2014-06-26 with total page 615 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses contemporary discourses on a wide variety of topics related to the ideological and epistemological changes of the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries, and the ways in which they have shaped the Spanish language and cultural manifestations in both Spain and Hispanic America. The majority of the chapters are concerned with ‘otherness’ in its various dimensions; the alien Other – foreign, immigrant, ethnically different, disempowered, female or minor – as well as the Other of different sexual orientation and/or ideology. Following Octavio Paz, otherness is expressed as the attempt to find the lost object of desire, the frustrating endeavour of the androgynous Plato wishing to embrace the other half of Zeus, who in his wrath, tore off from him. Otherness compels human beings to search for the complement from which they were severed. Thus a male joins a female, his other half, the only half that not only fills him but which allows him to return to the unity and reconciliation which is restored in its own perfection, formerly altered by divine will. As a result of this transformation, one can annul the distance that keeps us away from that which, not being our own, turns into a source of anguish. The clashing diversity of all things requires the human predisposition to accept that which is different. Such a predisposition is an expression of epistemological, ethical and political aperture. The disposition to co-exist with the different is imagined in the de-anthropocentricization of the bonds with all living realms. And otherness is, in some way, the reflection of sameness (mismidad). The other is closely related to the self, because the vision of the other implies a reflection about the self; it implies, consciously or not, a relationship with the self. These topics are addressed in this book from an interdisciplinary perspective, encompassing arts, humanities and social sciences.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 458 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection is the final volume of a four book survey of the state of phenomenology fifty years after the death of Edmund Husserl. Its publication represents a landmark in the comprehensive treatment of contemporary phenomenology in all its vastness and richness. The diversity of the issues raised here is dazzling, but the main themes of Husserl's thought are all either explicitly treated, or else they underlie the ingenious approaches found here. Time, historicity, intentionality, eidos, meaning, possibility/reality, and teleology are the main concerns of this collection devoted to studies in aesthetics, metaphysics and literary interpretation, written by such authors as, among others, R. Cobb-Stevens, C. Moreno Marquez, J. Swiecimski, Sitansu Ray and M. Kronegger. These original studies of phenomenological aesthetics and literary theory by scholars from all parts of the world were gathered by the World Institute for Advanced Phenomenological Research and Learn ing during the year 1988/89 during its assessment of the phenomeno logical movement, fifty years after Husserl's death.
