Book Synopsis Regulating Religion by : James T. Richardson
Download or read book Regulating Religion written by James T. Richardson and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 573 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Regulating Religion: Case Studies from Around the Globe presents, through the inclusion of contributions by international scholars, a global examination of how a number of contemporary societies are regulating religious groups. It focuses on legal efforts to exert social control over such groups, especially through court cases, but also with selected major legislative attempts to regulate them. As such, this analysis falls within the broad area of the sociology of social control and more specifically, legal social control, a topic of great interest when studying how contemporary societies attempt to maintain social order. The factual details about social and legal developments in societies where religion has been defined as problematic include Western and Eastern Europe, Asia, Oceania, and the Americas. This book will be of interest to researchers and students in the sociology of religion, the sociology of law, social policy, and religious studies as well as policy makers.

Book Synopsis The Politics of Religion and the Rise of Social Catholicism in Peru (1884-1935) by : Ricardo Daniel Cubas Ramacciotti
Download or read book The Politics of Religion and the Rise of Social Catholicism in Peru (1884-1935) written by Ricardo Daniel Cubas Ramacciotti and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2017-10-23 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Politics of Religion and the Rise of Social Catholicism in Peru (1884-1935) Ricardo Cubas Ramacciotti provides a lucid synthesis of the Catholic Church’s responses to the secularisation of the State and society whilst offering a fresh appraisal of the emergence of Social Catholicism and its contribution to social thought and development of civil society in post-independence Peru. Making use of diverse historical sources, Cubas provides a comprehensive view of a reformist yet anti-revolutionary trend within the Peruvian Church that, decades before the emergence of Liberation Theology and under divergent intellectual paradigms, developed an active agenda that addressed the new social problems of the country, including those of urban workers, and of indigenous populations.
Book Synopsis Popular Religion and Modernization in Latin America by : Cristian G. Parker
Download or read book Popular Religion and Modernization in Latin America written by Cristian G. Parker and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2015-10-14 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This landmark work constitutes a complete historical, sociological, and political view of religion as a cultural expression in Latin America. Parker shows how, beginning with the arrival of the conquistadors, religion has played a transcendent role in shaping the national cultures of the region, particularly its popular cultures, and continues to do so. Parker argues that while capitalistic modernization and urbanization do lead to secularization, this process is not linear or progressive. Secularization in Latin America does not destroy its religious fabric but rather transforms it, accentuating its pluralistic character. Christianity, and particularly Roman Catholicism, has influenced Latin American identity and culture most profoundly. But it has by no means been the sole influence, nor has Christianity itself remained unchanged in the process. As a product of history and capitalistic modernization, the trait of religion that emerges most clearly is that of cultural and religious pluralism.

Book Synopsis El elemento religioso en J.J. Rousseau by : Ferrando López, Andrés
Download or read book El elemento religioso en J.J. Rousseau written by Ferrando López, Andrés and published by Editorial UOC. This book was released on 2016-10-03 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
Book Synopsis Power, Politics, And Pentecostals In Latin America by : Edward L Cleary
Download or read book Power, Politics, And Pentecostals In Latin America written by Edward L Cleary and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-02-07 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today over forty million Latin Americans classify themselves as Protestant, of which the overwhelming majority belong to some form of Pentecostalism. The rapid dissemination of Pentecostal beliefs has produced vibrant alternatives to traditional dominant culture and changed relations within the family, locality, and workplace. This volume introduces broad issues in the Pentecostal movement, including gender relations, political power and organization, and inter-Pentecostal and ecumenical relations. These themes are then examined more specifically in the country case studies, which address the historical foundations of the Pentecostal movement, patterns of and explanation for its growth, and the consequences of its expanding presence, including increased political influence.

This book was released on 2019-08-16 with total page 873 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Download or read book Salve Regina written by Erica Fuentes and published by Casablanca Publishing. This book was released on 2010-12-09 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Synopsis Revolution, Revival, and Religious Conflict in Sandinista Nicaragua by : Calvin L. Smith
Download or read book Revolution, Revival, and Religious Conflict in Sandinista Nicaragua written by Calvin L. Smith and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2007-03-31 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This interdisciplinary study breaks new ground by exploring relations between Protestants (mainly Pentecostals) and the Sandinistas in revolutionary Nicaragua, which to date have received scant attention. It challenges the view that most Protestants supported the Sandinistas (in fact, the majority vigorously opposed them) and establishes why many believed Nicaragua was heading towards communism or totalitarianism. Meanwhile, the Sandinistas expressed irritation with Pentecostalism’s otherworldliness and support for Israel. Pentecostals were harassed, even brutally repressed in the northern highlands, leading many to join the Contras. That a minority of Protestants supported the Sandinistas caused further problems. Pentecostals and Sandinistas were ideological rivals offering an alternative vision to the poor: revolution or revival. As Pentecostalism exploded, a collision between the two was inevitable.

Book Synopsis Religion and Politics in Comparative Perspective by : Ted Gerard Jelen
Download or read book Religion and Politics in Comparative Perspective written by Ted Gerard Jelen and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2002-04-01 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Religion is resurgent across the globe. In many countries religion is a powerful source of political mobilization, and in some a potent social cleavage. In some religion reinforces the state, in others it provides the space for resistance. This book contains a series of detailed studies examining religion and politics in specific countries or regions. The cases include countries with one dominant religious tradition, and others with two or more competing traditions. They include Catholicism, Protestantism, Islam, Hinduism, Shinto and Buddhism. They include states where religion and politics are closely linked, and others with at least a low wall of separation between church and state. The cases are organized by the type of religious marketplace, but allow many other comparisons as well. We develop some generalizations from the cases, and hope that they will be a fertile source of theorizing for others.
