The book is structured across 11 core axes to aid healthcare professionals in understanding the topic. The axes address issues such as health promotion and quality of life, the transition from ephemerality to chronicity throughout life, the presence of chronicity in childhood and adolescence, violence against transgender people, the coexistence of communicable and non-communicable chronic diseases in the community, work-related chronic diseases, chronicity in the elderly, and strategies for sustainable development in this context. It discusses the importance of palliative care for patients facing finitude and explores the role of spirituality in coping with chronicity. In summary, the book aims to present a comprehensive and multidimensional perspective on chronicity, providing valuable insights for the teaching, research, extension, and care sectors.

Book excerpt: This international handbook brings together researchers and teachers from 25 countries of the five continents to share their experiences of teaching health promotion in undergraduate and graduate courses related to different health professions. Chapter authors share teaching methodologies used in classes, discuss the competencies students need to learn and indicate research opportunities. Readers will be provided with real-world examples of empowering, participatory, holistic, intersectoral, equitable and sustainable teaching/learning strategies that aim to improve health and reduce health inequities. This handbook was edited by an editorial board formed by 12 members of the International Union for Health Promotion and Education (IUHPE) from seven countries – Brazil, Belgium, Canada, Israel, New Zealand, Taiwan and UK –, and includes 45 chapters organized in seven thematic sections, each one dedicated to a different aspect of the process of teaching and learning health promotion: The health promotion curriculum Making health promotion relevant to practice Pedagogies for health promotion Special topics for health promotion Health promotion assessment and quality assurance Health promotion as a transformational practice Students’ reflections The International Handbook of Teaching and Learning in Health Promotion: Practices and Reflections from Around the World aims to encourage a dialogue between teaching and learning practices carried out locally and the possibilities of replicating these experiences globally, recognizing cultural differences and similarities. This handbook is intended for a wide range of readers, including education and training providers, health professionals and health care students. Due to its intersectoral and interdisciplinary approach, it will also be of interest to teachers and students in other fields of the Social Sciences, such as Urban Planning, Social Work, Public Policy, International Relations and Population Studies.

Book excerpt: This volume offers a description and a deep examination of discourse genres across four disciplines (Psychology, Social Work, Industrial Chemistry, and Construction Engineering), in academic and professional settings. The study is based on one of the largest available corpus on disciplinary written discourse in Spanish (PUCV-2006 Corpus of Spanish containing almost 60 million words). Twelve chapters range from the theoretical guiding principles of the research in terms of genre conception, the detailed description of each corpus (academic and professional), computational analysis from multi-dimensional perspectives, and the qualitative analysis of two specialized genres (University Textbook and Disciplinary Text) in terms of their rhetorical macro-moves and moves. Theoretically speaking, a multi-dimensional perspective (social, linguistic and cognitive) is emphasized and special attention to the cognitive nature of discourse genres is supported.

Book excerpt: The Pan American Sanitary Bureau gathers information on, and examines issues relating to, the disparities in health conditions and services in the Americas, especially as they relate to socio-economic indicators such as education, income, class, ethnicity and race, geographic location and gender. The concept of equity has emerged as a guiding principle for the Bureau's work. The articles gathered in this publication discuss how this idea can underpin the Bureau's work at the operational level, and can be incorporated into technical co-operation activities. Many of the perspectives expressed in the collection come from conceptual work developed through the Bureau's ongoing work with collaborating institutions, such as the Rockefeller Foundation and the World Bank, as well as academic and professional bodies in the region.

This book was released on 2014-08-12 with total page 389 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This reader reflects the genesis, scope, and direction of women’s activism in a single Latin American country. It collects the voices of forty-one diverse women who live in Costa Rica, some radical, others strongly conservative, and most ranging inbetween, as they write about their lives, their problems, their aspirations. Unlike the comparative studies of women’s issues that look at several different countries, the reader provides an insider’s view of one small, but quintessentially Latin American, society. These women write of their own experience in organizing and working for change within the Costa Rican community. Some represent groups fitting into traditional “women’s movement” that wants to improve certain aspects of women’s and families’ daily lives. Still others, the “feminists,” argue forcefully that true improvement requires a profound change of power relations in society, of women’s access to power and decision making. The articles are organized into thematic groups that range from the definitions of Feminism in Costa Rica to women in Costa Rican history, women’s legal equality, discrimination against women, and the status of Women’s Studies. The brief biographies that identify each author underscore the leadership of Costa Rican women in Latin American Feminism. The founders and editors of Mujer, one of the most influential Feminist journals in Latin America, are among the authors represented in the reader. The audience for this book will include specialists interested in Latin America, in women in Latin America, and in the international women’s movement.
