Book excerpt: This book addresses the reception of Islamic visual culture by the northern Iberian kingdoms, by systematically comparing works of art from both sides and fleshing out their historical context. This study includes figurative and iconographic motifs, architectural forms, and even the spolia from constructions and Arabic inscriptions that were embedded in Christian buildings. The Islamic visual culture of al-Andalus was often transformed as it was recreated by Christian hands, bringing to the fore various nuances in the relationship between the two religious communities. Artistic transfer was conditioned by social coexistence between Christians and Muslims—both in the caliphate al-Andalus and in the northern realms—and military conflict. To approach the different ways in which Andalusi visual culture was received in the northern kingdoms, while embracing the vast diversity of case studies available, this book is divided into three thematic sections: Reinterpretation, Appropriation, and Artistic Transfers. This book will be of interest to scholars working in art history, visual culture, and medieval studies.

Esta es una de las conclusiones más importantes de nuestra conferencia. Desde la invención de la moneda en Lidia, al final del siglo 7 aC, a la monetización de los hispanos del norte-oeste, o del interior de la Galia y Germania en la época de Augusto, 600 años que abarca toda una cadena de acontecimientos históricos importantes tuvo que pasar a la monetización de ser aceptados en las economías sociales, culturales y políticas, ya que el uso del dinero, tal vez no en su origen, pero definitivamente después, ayudó a los polis en sus intentos de equilibrar el equilibrio social. De hecho, 200 años después que se inventara el dinero, Aristóteles seguía filosofando sobre esto, y escribió sobre las relaciones de intercambio entre las comunidades el derecho a la reciprocidad que mantiene la sociedad civil, sobre la base de la proporción y no en la igualdad ... es el objeto que marca una justicia equitativa y que se da expresamente la no misma palabra, que significa "lo que se debe", "lo que es proporcional", "la medida correcta".

This book highlights the potential of the concepts of scale and scale change for comparing and explaining medieval socio-spatial processes. It integrates regional and temporal variations in the fragmentation of the Roman world and the emergence of medieval polities, which are often handled separately by late antique and early medieval specialists. Book excerpt: The goal of this book is to discuss the theoretical challenges posed by the study of social and political inequality of local societies in Western Europe during the Early Middle Ages. Traditional approaches have defined rural communities as passive bodies, poor and unstable in the framework of a self-sufficient economy. In the last few decades the crisis on social approaches both in medieval history and archaeology have missed the opportunity to re-evaluate the role of peasantry and other subaltern groups, even if new written ad material evidences have eroded the traditional assumptions. Conversely, scholars focused on elites and aristocracies have promoted very powerful agendas and projects. As a consequence of the 2007-2008 recession, Social Sciences have begun to be interested in social and economic inequality, opening new avenues for a reassessment of social history. The Early Medieval period has been identified by different scholars as a key term for the analysis of political complexity and social inequality in a long-term perspective. The study of local societies has become one of the most fruitful arenas to innovate medieval archaeology and history, using approaches related to the microhistory. This book, dedicated to Chris Wickham, is formed by fourteen papers centred on the study, from both written and material records, of early medieval local communities, which tend to propose a complex framework of social inequality in the local scale.
