Book excerpt: The work treats dynamical systems given by ordinary differential equations in the form $\frac{dX^\varepsilon(t)}{dt}=\varepsilon B(X^\varepsilon(t),Y^\varepsilon(t))$ where fast motions $Y^\varepsilon$ depend on the slow motion $X^\varepsilon$ (coupled with it) and they are either given by another differential equation $\frac{dY^\varepsilon(t)}{dt}=b(X^\varepsilon(t), Y^\varepsilon(t))$ or perturbations of an appropriate parametric family of Markov processes with freezed slow variables.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book develops the theory of continuous and discrete stochastic processes within the context of cell biology. In the second edition the material has been significantly expanded, particularly within the context of nonequilibrium and self-organizing systems. Given the amount of additional material, the book has been divided into two volumes, with volume I mainly covering molecular processes and volume II focusing on cellular processes. A wide range of biological topics are covered in the new edition, including stochastic ion channels and excitable systems, molecular motors, stochastic gene networks, genetic switches and oscillators, epigenetics, normal and anomalous diffusion in complex cellular environments, stochastically-gated diffusion, active intracellular transport, signal transduction, cell sensing, bacterial chemotaxis, intracellular pattern formation, cell polarization, cell mechanics, biological polymers and membranes, nuclear structure and dynamics, biological condensates, molecular aggregation and nucleation, cellular length control, cell mitosis, cell motility, cell adhesion, cytoneme-based morphogenesis, bacterial growth, and quorum sensing. The book also provides a pedagogical introduction to the theory of stochastic and nonequilibrium processes – Fokker Planck equations, stochastic differential equations, stochastic calculus, master equations and jump Markov processes, birth-death processes, Poisson processes, first passage time problems, stochastic hybrid systems, queuing and renewal theory, narrow capture and escape, extreme statistics, search processes and stochastic resetting, exclusion processes, WKB methods, large deviation theory, path integrals, martingales and branching processes, numerical methods, linear response theory, phase separation, fluctuation-dissipation theorems, age-structured models, and statistical field theory. This text is primarily aimed at graduate students and researchers working in mathematical biology, statistical and biological physicists, and applied mathematicians interested in stochastic modeling. Applied probabilists should also find it of interest. It provides significant background material in applied mathematics and statistical physics, and introduces concepts in stochastic and nonequilibrium processes via motivating biological applications. The book is highly illustrated and contains a large number of examples and exercises that further develop the models and ideas in the body of the text. It is based on a course that the author has taught at the University of Utah for many years.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The general topic of this book is the ergodic behavior of Markov processes. A detailed introduction to methods for proving ergodicity and upper bounds for ergodic rates is presented in the first part of the book, with the focus put on weak ergodic rates, typical for Markov systems with complicated structure. The second part is devoted to the application of these methods to limit theorems for functionals of Markov processes. The book is aimed at a wide audience with a background in probability and measure theory. Some knowledge of stochastic processes and stochastic differential equations helps in a deeper understanding of specific examples. Book excerpt: The authors study the Lyapunov exponents and their associated invariant subspaces for infinite dimensional random dynamical systems in a Banach space, which are generated by, for example, stochastic or random partial differential equations. The authors prove a multiplicative ergodic theorem and then use this theorem to establish the stable and unstable manifold theorem for nonuniformly hyperbolic random invariant sets.

Book excerpt: Many notions and results presented in the previous editions of this volume have since become quite popular in applications, and many of them have been “rediscovered” in applied papers. In the present 3rd edition small changes were made to the chapters in which long-time behavior of the perturbed system is determined by large deviations. Most of these changes concern terminology. In particular, it is explained that the notion of sub-limiting distribution for a given initial point and a time scale is identical to the idea of metastability, that the stochastic resonance is a manifestation of metastability, and that the theory of this effect is a part of the large deviation theory. The reader will also find new comments on the notion of quasi-potential that the authors introduced more than forty years ago, and new references to recent papers in which the proofs of some conjectures included in previous editions have been obtained. Apart from the above mentioned changes the main innovations in the 3rd edition concern the averaging principle. A new Section on deterministic perturbations of one-degree-of-freedom systems was added in Chapter 8. It is shown there that pure deterministic perturbations of an oscillator may lead to a stochastic, in a certain sense, long-time behavior of the system, if the corresponding Hamiltonian has saddle points. The usefulness of a joint consideration of classical theory of deterministic perturbations together with stochastic perturbations is illustrated in this section. Also a new Chapter 9 has been inserted in which deterministic and stochastic perturbations of systems with many degrees of freedom are considered. Because of the resonances, stochastic regularization in this case is even more important.

Book excerpt: The author unifies various constructions of $C^*$-algebras from dynamical systems, specifically, the dimension group construction of Krieger for shift spaces, the corresponding constructions of Wagoner and Boyle, Fiebig and Fiebig for countable state Markov shifts and one-sided shift spaces, respectively, and the constructions of Ruelle and Putnam for Smale spaces. The general setup is used to analyze the structure of the $C^*$-algebras arising from the homoclinic and heteroclinic equivalence relations in expansive dynamical systems, in particular, expansive group endomorphisms and automorphisms and generalized 1-solenoids. For these dynamical systems it is shown that the $C^*$-algebras are inductive limits of homogeneous or sub-homogeneous algebras with one-dimensional spectra.

They introduce an adapted version of Carleson measure. They construct various examples showing that their results are essentially sharp. This construction applies to every smooth action of any diffeological group G preserving a closed 2-form w, defined on some diffeological space X. In particular, that reveals a universal construction, associated to the action of the whole group of automorphisms Diff (X, w). By considering directly the space of momenta of any diffeological group G, that is the space g* of left-invariant 1-forms on G, this construction avoids any reference to Lie algebra or any notion of vector fields, or does not involve any functional analysis. These constructions of the various moment maps are illustrated by many examples, some of them originals and others suggested by the mathematical literature."--Publisher's description.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author considers homomorphisms $H \to K$ from an affine group scheme $H$ over a field $k$ of characteristic zero to a proreductive group $K$. Using a general categorical splitting theorem, Andre and Kahn proved that for every $H$ there exists such a homomorphism which is universal up to conjugacy. The author gives a purely group-theoretic proof of this result. The classical Jacobson-Morosov theorem is the particular case where $H$ is the additive group over $k$. As well as universal homomorphisms, the author considers more generally homomorphisms $H \to K$ which are minimal, in the sense that $H \to K$ factors through no proper proreductive subgroup of $K$. For fixed $H$, it is shown that the minimal $H \to K$ with $K$ reductive are parametrised by a scheme locally of finite type over $k$.

Whether or not the converse holds is an open question, at least in dimensions greater than four. The author shows that for a particular type of concordance, constructed using the surgery techniques of Gromov and Lawson, this converse holds in the case of closed simply connected manifolds of dimension at least five.
