Book Synopsis Mathematics Across Cultures by : Helaine Selin
Download or read book Mathematics Across Cultures written by Helaine Selin and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 489 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mathematics Across Cultures: A History of Non-Western Mathematics consists of essays dealing with the mathematical knowledge and beliefs of cultures outside the United States and Europe. In addition to articles surveying Islamic, Chinese, Native American, Aboriginal Australian, Inca, Egyptian, and African mathematics, among others, the book includes essays on Rationality, Logic and Mathematics, and the transfer of knowledge from East to West. The essays address the connections between science and culture and relate the mathematical practices to the cultures which produced them. Each essay is well illustrated and contains an extensive bibliography. Because the geographic range is global, the book fills a gap in both the history of science and in cultural studies. It should find a place on the bookshelves of advanced undergraduate students, graduate students, and scholars, as well as in libraries serving those groups.

Book Synopsis A Commemoration Ritual for Senwosret I by : Christina Geisen
Download or read book A Commemoration Ritual for Senwosret I written by Christina Geisen and published by Yale Egyptological Studies. This book was released on 2018-06-15 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Commemoration Ritual for Senwosret I, better known under the term Ramesseum Dramatic Papyrus, is a document that was found in a late Middle Kingdom tomb in the Ramesseum necropolis, together with other manuscripts and artifacts, all primarily magico-medical in function. The present study discusses the occupation of the tomb owner based on an analysis of this exceptional find in its entirety. The main core of the book is dedicated, however, to the Ramesseum Dramatic Papyrus. It examines the fabrication of the manuscript and its present condition. An updated translation and a grammatical analysis of the text are provided and a discussion of the relationship of myth and ritual as well as of the dramatic aspect of the ritual is included. Based on the analysis of the content, the participants in the ritual, the representation of the king in the vignettes, and relying on the comparison between the rites occurring in this document and those included in other royal and statue rituals attested from ancient Egypt, it can be shown that the text features a ritual that was held in commemoration of the deceased king Senwosret I. The book also includes photographs of the manuscript as well as digital drawings of the papyrus.

Book Synopsis The Craft of a Good Scribe by : Steve Vinson
Download or read book The Craft of a Good Scribe written by Steve Vinson and published by Harvard Egyptological Studies. This book was released on 2017-11-14 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Craft of a Good Scribe, Steve Vinson offers a comprehensive study of the Demotic Egyptian First Tale of Setne Khaemwas (Third Century BCE), the first to appear since 1900. "First Setne" is the most important extant Demotic literary text, and among the most important fictional compositions from any period of ancient Egypt. The tale, which is by turns lurid, tragic and ultimately comic, deals with Setne's theft of a magic book written by the god Thoth himself, and subsequently Setne's punishment through a hallucinatory encounter with the ghostly femme fatale Tabubue. Vinson provides a new textual edition and commentary, and explores the tale's cultural background, its modern reception, and approaches to its interpretation as a work of literature.
Book Synopsis The Apis Embalming Ritual by : R. L. Vos
Download or read book The Apis Embalming Ritual written by R. L. Vos and published by Peeters Publishers. This book was released on 1993 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first complete edition of a hieratic-demotic papyrus preserved to this day in the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna. The papyrus dates back to the middle of the second century B.C. and contains a minute discription of a considerable part of the embalming and burial rites of the Apis, the sacred bull of the Egyptians. The Vienna papyrus is the only authentic document to give a coherent picture of the course of events during the embalming of the holy animal, adding substantially to what we know already from the Serapeum stelae and the classical writers. The book comprises a general introduction, a translation with commentary, an annotated transcription, a glossary, several indexes and photos of the text.
Download or read book Out of Order written by Donald J. Wold and published by . This book was released on 2009-05-01 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Homosexuality continues to be a much debated subject in church and society. Many people use the Bible to form their opinions on gay marriage, gays in the church, etc. In Out of Order, Dr. Wold thoroughly examines the biblical references to homosexuality while at the same time explaining the nature of same-sex relations in the ancient Near East. The author states: "What is needed in the current debate regarding the Bible and homosexuality is a spirit of reconciliation rather than condemnation or confrontation on the part of all who address this issue."
Download or read book Structures of Power written by Ilan Peled and published by Oriental Institute Press. This book was released on 2018-08-29 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume publishes the proceedings of the eleventh annual University of Chicago Oriental Institute Seminar. Its central goal is to present a cross-cultural study of the intersection between law and gender relations in the ancient world, with a focus on the ancient Near East. When reflecting upon the formation, perpetuation, and interactions of social structures that frequently come into conflict with each other, one discovers that gender constructs are used by mechanisms of social monitoring and control; structures of power. One such example is the realm of jurisdiction and legislation. This volume uses the sphere of legal institutions as a prism through which to consider gender relations in the ancient world, both in the Near East and beyond. The way in which similar issues were manifested in different cultural and historical contexts is examined, with the goal of identifying common denominators as well as particularities. The three themes discussed in this volume are examined through multiple historical-cultural examples.
