Book excerpt: Laos stands at the center of mainland Southeast Asia, sharing borders with all the main states in the region including China, so that when one touches on Laos, one touches the heart of the region. This study of culture and society in Laos inevitably leads into broader issues associated with all the surrounding societies and cultures concerning their origins and contemporary developments. Essays focus on the creation of the idea of Laos and its culture, whether it be through literature, tourism, or the activities of nationalists, thereby contributing to more general debates on the nature of Southeast Asian nationalism. They look at questions of minorities in Laos and issues of ethnic change. And they look at Laos in its regional context, and at Lao businessmen in their new global context. Grant Evans is reader in anthropology at the University of Hong Kong.

Book excerpt: Changes in the character of the political regime in Laos after 2000, a massive influx of foreign investment, and disruptions to rural life arising from improved communications and new forms of mobility within and across the borders have produced a major transformation. Alongside these changes, a group of young scholars carried out studies that document the rise of a new social, cultural and economic order. The contributions to this volume draw on original fieldwork materials and unpublished sources, and provide fresh analyses of topics ranging from the structures of power to the politics of territoriality and new forms of sociability in emerging urban spaces.

Download or read book Globalization, Culture and Society in Laos written by Boike Rehbein and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2007-08-13 with total page 371 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Incorporating original fieldwork carried out over a period of more than ten years, combined with innovative theoretical argument, Globalization, Culture and Society in Laos presents one of the first sociological investigations into modern Laos. Boike Rehbein gives a fascinating overview of contemporary Lao culture and society, whilst linking local and national phenomena to tendencies of globalization and the history of the region. The book introduces a new theoretical approach based on the sociology of Pierre Bourdieu, applying this sociology to the interpretation of Lao history. It also examines various aspects of Lao culture and society, including economics, politics, language, higher education, music, and religion. Rehbein concludes by attempting to synthesize these cultural elements with the impact of globalization to give a synopsis of contemporary Lao society. Written by an expert in Lao history and culture, familiar with the language and the people, this book will be of huge interest to students and scholars of Laos, Southeast Asia, social theory and globalization.

Book Synopsis Laos and Its Expatriates in the United States by : Kou Yang
Download or read book Laos and Its Expatriates in the United States written by Kou Yang and published by America Star Books. This book was released on 2013-07 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book covers Laos, its past and present as well as its land, its peoples, and its interaction with Laos' former citizens living in the Unites States of America. It also includes a brief coverage of Laos in the re-orientation of the U.S. priority in the Asia-Pacific. The book highlights the Secret War and its impact on the country, the refugee exodus and their adaptation to the United States, postwar relationship between Laos and the United States, and the process of healing the scars from the war years. To tell the story of Laos and its mystique, fascinating culture and belief systems, the book includes many folk stories and local legends that led to certain beliefs, festivities, and/or gave name to certain mountains and local villages. This discussion also includes traditions and cultural festivities, rituals and ceremonies and their meaning and ramifications. The discussion of war to peace or healing scars of the war-adds an important meaning to the book and special hope to the peoples of Laos and Laos' expatriates in the United States. Another important point of the book is its cover on the influences from its neighbors. More specifically and significantly, the impact of "Sino Neo-colonialism" has on Laos and its peoples. Another important aspect of the book is its overall narrative, which is from the point of view of an academic and native of Laos, who sees the diverse peoples of Laos as having peacefully co-existed since ancient time, and making significant contributions to the making of Laos as well as being key players in Laos' quest to be rid of foreign domination. Despite their experiences of many periods of turbulent wars, internal division, and economic hardships, the diverse peoples of Laos have always survived and moved from one chapter into another chapter of their history. The book is designed to provide information that might explain some of the issues of the past, present and future. It should provide needed facts and figures to the general public, the Hmong and Laotian Americans, and the peoples in Laos. It can be very useful for tourists as well as entrepreneurs who want to go to Laos. The book can also be used as reference for teaching topics related to the Vietnam War, Secret War, Southeast Asia or Asian American Studies.
Book Synopsis Post-war Laos by : Vatthana Pholsena
Download or read book Post-war Laos written by Vatthana Pholsena and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2006 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Three decades after the conclusion of the civil war that brought the communist Pathet Lao to power, the leaders of the Lao People's Democratic Republic are still searching for a compelling and unifying national identity. As detailed in Postwar Laos--a rigorously researched, cogently argued, and pathbreaking book--Laotian nationalism is caught between the rhetoric of preservation and the desire for modernity. Using fine-grained analysis of substantial ethnographic and archival material, Vatthana Pholsena sheds light on the politics of identity, the geographies of memory, and the power of historical narrative in contemporary Laos.Pholsena pays particular attention to the country's ethnic minorities, who had been marginalized--politically, administratively, and symbolically--by the French colonial government, which ruled for fifty years, and by its Royal Lao successor. Many members of these minorities fought for the Lao People's Liberation Army in the country's civil war (1960-1975), though, and were thus exposed to the processes of modern politics. The first book to examine the impact of such forces on Laos's ethnic minorities and their perception of Laotian nationalism, Postwar Laos also refines established theories of nationalism. Pholsena addresses a weakness common to all: the tendency to deny agency to individuals, who may in fact interpret their relationship to, and place within, the nation in a variety of ways that change according to time and circumstance.Postwar Laos offers a new perspective on the history of Southeast Asia and, more broadly, on the formation of national identity that will be welcomed by historians, political scientists, sociologists, ethnographers, and cultural anthropologists alike.
