Book excerpt: You just don't have the time you'd like to learn a language. There's school or work, your family, and other various activities you need to juggle on a daily basis. And as much as you'd like to finally learn a language, you're just too tired or too busy. You feel like you'll never be able to fit language learning into your schedule. But here's the thing...You CAN find the time learn a new language. Not convinced?Well, it's true...And I know that for a fact because I myself have done it.Over the last few years, I learnt several languages while working a full time job, performing as a professional musician, running my blog, Eurolinguiste, and maintaining my social/family life.It took me some time to figure out how I'd fit learning into my schedule, but after some experimenting I found several strategies that worked for me.And now I'd like to share them with you to help you save timeI created Language Learning Accelerator to share the exact strategies and tools that I use to be a productive language learner. I haven't always effectively managed my time, but with the experience of learning and maintaining close to ten languages, I've picked up a lot of tactics to change that.A lot of the techniques out there didn't work for me, so I decided to try a few things on my own. And that's when everything changed. With a full-time job, a full-time career, and as a new parent, figuring out how and when to study languages is a challenge. I've made a lot of mistakes along the way, but I've finally found a system that works for me.But I don't want you to spend all that time going through the same long and frustrating process that I did, which is why I've worked hard to include all of the best practices to fit language learning in to your busy schedule.Language Learning Accelerator combines the most impactful productivity strategies with tons of language learning tips to provide you with a time management system that will help you become a more effective language learner.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My Story! This summer I started learning Dutch. I bought myself a flashcards starter, a picture dictionary and beginner's book. I have to admit that after two weeks of using them I gave them away for free to my friends and I let them suffer from that poor selection of language education. What was the reason for my decision? Well, I was starting from scratch. I knew nothing about the Dutch language. Products I bought, despite being for "beginners" were teaching me complete nonsenses. Across many flashcards, I immediately have thrown away there were words like hooked nose or city council. What is the use for them for such a beginner like me? I couldn't say a sentence but I was able to name all the body parts and seasons. What's the point? I decided to change that so I have created a list of words I need to memorize to be able to read and understand at least half of the text in my video game magazine. I only needed 50 most frequent words and some knowledge of English to figure out what's going on in the text. It took some time but by learning the right vocabulary I was able to understand half of the text instead of two sets of flashcards 500 words each. It was really a boost. Frequency study? There are many words that you use way more often than others, which makes them more valuable to know. Therefore the simplest way to make a progress in your target language is to learn the right vocabulary. How many words? 250 - enough to go on holidays 1000 - covers 85% of speech 3000 - 98% of the spoken language As you see the key is to learn the right words. What's Inside? I selected the most frequently used words to give you the basics you need to understand the language. There are more than 300 words grouped into categories. Some words are also used in example sentences to help you understand the context.

Book excerpt: NATIONAL BESTSELLER • For anyone who wants to learn a foreign language, this is the method that will finally make the words stick. “A brilliant and thoroughly modern guide to learning new languages.”—Gary Marcus, cognitive psychologist and author of the New York Times bestseller Guitar Zero At thirty years old, Gabriel Wyner speaks six languages fluently. He didn’t learn them in school—who does? Rather, he learned them in the past few years, working on his own and practicing on the subway, using simple techniques and free online resources—and here he wants to show others what he’s discovered. Starting with pronunciation, you’ll learn how to rewire your ears and turn foreign sounds into familiar sounds. You’ll retrain your tongue to produce those sounds accurately, using tricks from opera singers and actors. Next, you’ll begin to tackle words, and connect sounds and spellings to imagery rather than translations, which will enable you to think in a foreign language. And with the help of sophisticated spaced-repetition techniques, you’ll be able to memorize hundreds of words a month in minutes every day. This is brain hacking at its most exciting, taking what we know about neuroscience and linguistics and using it to create the most efficient and enjoyable way to learn a foreign language in the spare minutes of your day.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Synthesis Lecture focuses on techniques for efficient data orchestration within DNN accelerators. The End of Moore's Law, coupled with the increasing growth in deep learning and other AI applications has led to the emergence of custom Deep Neural Network (DNN) accelerators for energy-efficient inference on edge devices. Modern DNNs have millions of hyper parameters and involve billions of computations; this necessitates extensive data movement from memory to on-chip processing engines. It is well known that the cost of data movement today surpasses the cost of the actual computation; therefore, DNN accelerators require careful orchestration of data across on-chip compute, network, and memory elements to minimize the number of accesses to external DRAM. The book covers DNN dataflows, data reuse, buffer hierarchies, networks-on-chip, and automated design-space exploration. It concludes with data orchestration challenges with compressed and sparse DNNs and future trends. The target audience is students, engineers, and researchers interested in designing high-performance and low-energy accelerators for DNN inference.

Book excerpt: This volume provides an unprecedented insight into current approaches to crosslinguistic influence (CLI). The collection investigates a range of themes including linguistic relativity, the possible contributions of neurolinguistics, the problem of cognitive development and the role of the frequency of structures in acquisition from distinct, overlapping and complementary perspectives. Chapters focusing on vocabulary, morphosyntactic categories, semantic structures, and phonetic and phonological structures feature in the volume, as do over 20 languages, in order to offer new insights into both theoretical and empirical issues in CLI, including the consequences of great or little similarity in structures between languages. The relevance of CLI research for teaching is discussed in a number of chapters, as is the phenomenon of multilingualism. The collection will appeal to researchers, graduate and postgraduate students, teachers and professionals interested in the field of CLI in SLA.

Book excerpt: This extensive undertaking, Accelerator Mass Spectrometry, conducts an elaborate and comprehensive summary of one of the foremost catalysts of progress in scientific research. Accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS), an innovative analytical technique, measures rare atoms at unprecedented levels of sensitivity, revolutionizing the science of radiocarbon dating and accessing new natural radioisotopes as environmental tracers and chronometers. This book demonstrates how AMS is applied in the studies of extraterrestrial materials, the earth sciences, the future of the global environment, and the history of mankind. This compendium also highlights the significant impact of AMS on several fields of scientific investigation, spurring remarkable studies in global climate change, ancient artifacts, pollution, nuclear safeguards, geochronology, and materials characterization. The myriad of sample types and variety of applications in this examination include: Meteorites from Mars Ancient air trapped in Antarctic ice The Shroud of Turin The dating of human bones The colonization of the Americas and Australia Ancient rock art The crown of Charlemagne Cancerogenic effects of cooked meat The consequences of the Chernobyl accident The role of aluminum in Alzheimer's Disease This unique edition has compiled the diverse set of scientific literature into a single volume, suitable as a text or resource on the major AMS-related outcomes, issues, and methods.
