Human communication is based on features that describe an event and capture emotions, needs, interests and fears. Language is used to resolve or escalate dispute. Opara (2016) asserted that People from different culture and social units perceive the world through the lens provided by their distinctive languages. Meaning that language provides a repertoire of words that name the categories into which the language users have divided their world. In fact, definitions of words are linguistically, culturally and contextually bound. Words carry meanings that make sense to members of a shared social environment. Conflict resolution relies heavily on word choices. Here language is key to dispute resolution because it is the words human beings in the world use as an accelerator to harmonious living or existential war fronts. There is an assumption in Kenya that conflict is best resolved when people can speak in one “nativity”, for instance, the kikuyu when faced with conflict can best sort out the issue in their native language because of the semiotics of the conflict. There is linguistic consistency where all the words used add value to the discourse. The researcher posits that in a country like Kenya, were national conflicts build from local dialectics, Kiswahili can be the unifying factor and a conflict resolution tool. Kiswahili as a trade language in Eastern Africa does accommodate the diversity of culture and language use. The paper explores the strengths of Kiswahili language in intercultural conflict resolution, and emphasizes the need to consider the uses of the language in national and transnational conflict resolution.

Not only the large variety of different ethnic groups, but also British colonial influences have left their marks on this diverse region. With English as the official language and Kiswahili as the national language, it seems that the language situation in Kenya should be clear cut and well defined. Yet, the search for a national identity, feelings of inferiority towards the “colonial” language English and the strive for a better political and economic life in Kenya confront the population with many challenges and problems. Kenyan society is shaped by 40 to 60 African ethnic languages, such as Maasai or Dholuo. The main means of communication among these different ethnic groups has become Kiswahili. But Kiswahili itself has seven dialects and several sub-dialects. In addition, several European languages were left behind by the colonial era and Arabic and Asian merchants have brought their languages with them too. Thus, the language situation in Kenya is extremely complex and considered to be a 3 + 1 language country. That means that most Kenyan citizens speak three languages (plus or minus one): the mother tongue (in most cases an African ethnic language), Kiswahili – the national language and most often also lingua franca, and English – the official language and therefore used for all educational and governmental purposes. But the competence and use of these communication systems varies largely. Like citizens of other imposed multilingual environment situations, Kenyans have developed their very own way to communicate with each other. But language is not only a pure means of communication – it carries different identities depending on social context. It serves to distinguish oneself from others as well as to express one’s membership to a certain group and thus influencing one’s understanding of culture. However, my aim in this paper is to analyse the current trilingualism in Kenya and explain the different levels of competence. I will put the main emphasis on English and Kiswahili, as they receive official recognition by the Kenyan government. When considering the interaction of the official languages and those inferior to them, I will also refer to some new language forms that might influence the Kenyan society considerably in the future.

There have been complaints about the poor performance of Kiswahili both at primary school level. The study recommends that schools should come up with clear and working language policies in order to promote the use of Kiswahili language. For example, all the teachers, workers and pupils should use Kiswahili when addressing each other, especially during assemblies and barazas. The findings of the study shall provide insight in understanding the role of school environment to the learning of Kiswahili at primary school level.

Research shows that it is recognised by both speakers and those in the wider speech community as a distinctive language variety used mainly, but not exclusively, by the younger generation. Sheng is linked to transnational African diaspora influences and global black culture, especially through social media, hip hop and reggae music. It has also entered mainstream domains of language use in the Kenyan media, as well as political and corporate advertising. It can be seen to be changing from a restricted, in-group and covert youth language into a vernacular of wider communication in Nairobi and beyond. Sheng is a language phenomenon that has a bearing on Kenya's national identity and its sociolinguistic future.

The introductory section is a general discussion of the political implications of language policies in multilingual nations and the problems resulting from attempts to institute instruction in the mother tongue. The design of the ensuing study is based on two major assumptions: (1) that educational policy and school texts are good indicators of societal "core" values and future orientations; and (2) that salient policy features and values will likely be translated into school texts. Content analysis is used to examine data from four sets of instructional contexts: Kenya/English, Kenya/Swahili, Tanzania/English, and Tanzania/Swahili. The findings are organized around the following broad categories: daily life, Africanization, bases for legitimating knowledge, self-help, egalitarianism, value of education, work emphasis, national integration, rural development, African traditions, and cooperative behavior. The subsequent discussion focuses on cross-national contexts (that is, English medium and Swahili medium perspectives irrespective of national boundaries) and within-nation contexts (relating to salient policy features in each country.
