Book Synopsis Discourse and Social Life by : Srikant Sarangi
Download or read book Discourse and Social Life written by Srikant Sarangi and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-06-11 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection brings together for the first time in a single volume many of the major figures in contemporary discourse studies. Each chapter is an original contribution which has been specifically commissioned for this book, and together they document the wide range of concerns and techniques which characterise the discipline at the turn of the century. Discourse and Social Life is concerned with a variety of different types of data - talk, text and interaction - and covers research sites which range from the home setting through the health care setting and the courtroom to the public sphere. The book not only provides a critical, historical overview of different traditions of discourse analysis, but also projects to some extent the possible developments of this field of study, as other allied disciplines (Philosophy, Psychology, Sociology, Rhetoric and Communication Studies) are taking a discursive turn. Readers are invited to draw parallels between these different approaches to studying discourse in its social context. The contributors are- Sally Candlin, Malcolm Coulthard, Justine Coupland, Nikolas Coupland, Norman Fairclough, Ruqaiya Hasan, Robert Kaplan, Geoff Leech, Yon Maley, Greg Myers, Celia Roberts, Srikant Sarangi, Ron Scollon, Theo van Leeuwen, Henry Widdowson and Ruth Wodak.

Book Synopsis Language, Culture and Identity by : Torben Vestergaard
Download or read book Language, Culture and Identity written by Torben Vestergaard and published by Aalborg University Press. This book was released on 1999 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Are people's identities an effect of their membership of linguistic, national regional and ethnic groups, and does such group membership create problems for "inter-cultural communication"? These questions are addressed in this collection of nine papers from the Third Annual Conference of the Nordic Network for Intercultural Communications. Answers are drawn from general, theoretical, pedagogical and empirical points of view. They agree on one fundamental issue: the language-identity-cutlure complex, dynamic and overlapping rather than static and isomorphic. This leads the contributions to touch upon the political implications of a relational and dynamic view on language, culture, human rights and regional identities in a Europe with crumbling national boundaries. Among the topics are whether a person's identity is bound to a certain place and whether it is constant. Others discuss cross-cultural communication, a post-structuralist stance, different values ascribed to words and actions; the ability of people to interact with different cultures; the cross-cultural language link in language teaching; what language choice says about people and their attitudes towards each other when more than one language is available; and a recognition that most of us are members of several cultural groups, which can create incompatible values and attitudes.

Download or read book Flutes of Fire written by Leanne Hinton and published by Heyday. This book was released on 1994 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Before outsiders arrived, about 100 distinct Indian languages were spoken in California, many of them alive today. Each of these languages represents a unique way of understanding the world and expressing that understanding. Flutes of Fire examines many different aspects of Indian languages: languages, such as Yana, in which men and women have markedly different ways of speaking; ingenious ways used in each language for counting. Hinton discusses how language can retain evidence of ancient migrations, and addresses what different groups are doing to keep languages alive and pass them down to the younger generations.
