Nelson Moore, one of the bowlers, has recently become a local hero by saving a teammate from choking on a happy hour chicken bone. Now he must deal with his newfound fame while coping with the early stages of dementia. This is an engaging and often moving novel about a group of senior citizens bound together by old friendships and romances, and by their determination to live life to its fullest. Senescence is not for sissies, but these characters show us that it is still a time to love, dream, and explore their own potential.

Liberty Lane and the One-Girl Rebelution is an entertaining tale about a girl caught up in an epic singing competition. Full of disastrous capers, hidden identities, and mischievous plots, Liberty’s plucky spirit and determination will keep readers madly flipping the pages! Delightful” Jennifer Lynn Alvarez, author of THE GUARDIAN HERD and RIDERS OF THE REALM book series. The confident but often stubborn spitfire, Liberty Lane O’Shea strongly stands for what she believes in; from standing on tables at school to boycott the high calorie foods they are serving, to standing in the pouring rain outside Target to protest their lack of chic rain attire. When the reigning queen of the Royal Crown competition is fired, the “King” of Sir Frederick Preparatory School and his talent scout search for the next big star. Liberty Lane is discovered and asked to compete. With nothing to lose and everything to gain, she agrees to vie for the crown. Everything Liberty Lane stands for will be tested when she encounters a malicious contestant intent to secure himself the crown by destroying his competition which just happens to include Liberty Lane herself! Reality TV at its best, Liberty Lane and the One-Girl Rebelution is chalked full of mischief, misfortune, capers, and clowning. Grab your imaginary seat in the front row of the studio audience and watch the escapades of Liberty Lane unfold live!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In her youth, Rose Wilder Lane supported the Russian Revolution, but a trip to Russia quickly dispelled her illusions. She realized that the mass politics of socialism necessarily suppressed individual freedom. America was founded on a different principle: individuals should take responsibility for their own lives. On this principle, America became the wealthiest of all nations and the hope of the world. The New Deal of 1933 struck against American individualism, substituting for it the tired collectivist programs of Europe. In Give Me Liberty, originally published in 1936, Lane called for a return to American individualism and a repudiation of the New Deal.

Book excerpt: On Liberty is the story of today's threats to our freedoms and a highly personal, impassioned plea in defence of fundamental rights, from Shami Chakrabarti, Britain's leading human rights campaigner On 11 September 2001, our world changed. The West's response to 9/11 has morphed into a period of exception. Governments have decided that the rule of law and human rights are often too costly. In On Liberty, Shami Chakrabarti explores why our fundamental rights and freedoms are indispensable. She shows, too, the unprecedented pressures those rights are under today. Drawing on her own work in high-profile campaigns, from privacy laws to anti-terror legislation, Chakrabarti shows the threats to our democratic institutions and why our rights are paramount in upholding democracy. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Does every increase in the power of government entail a loss of liberty for the people? James H. Read examines how four key Founders--James Madison, Alexander Hamilton, James Wilson, and Thomas Jefferson--wrestled with this question during the first two decades of the American Republic. Power versus Liberty reconstructs a four-way conversation--sometimes respectful, sometimes shrill--that touched on the most important issues facing the new nation: the Constitution, the Bill of Rights, federal authority versus states' rights, freedom of the press, the controversial Bank of the United States, the relation between nationalism and democracy, and the elusive meaning of "the consent of the governed." Each of the men whose thought Read considers differed on these key questions. Jefferson believed that every increase in the power of government came at the expense of liberty: energetic governments, he insisted, are always oppressive. Madison believed that this view was too simple, that liberty can be threatened either by too much or too little governmental power. Hamilton and Wilson likewise rejected the Jeffersonian view of power and liberty but disagreed with Madison and with each other. The question of how to reconcile energetic government with the liberty of citizens is as timely today as it was in the first decades of the Republic. It pervades our political discourse and colors our readings of events from the confrontation at Waco to the Oklahoma City bombing to Congressional debate over how to spend the government surplus. While the rhetoric of both major political parties seems to posit a direct relationship between the size of our government and the scope of our political freedoms, the debates of Madison, Hamilton, Wilson, and Jefferson confound such simple dichotomies. As Read concludes, the relation between power and liberty is inherently complex.

Book excerpt: A spirit-stirring debut about basketball, family, and an unlikely underdog who overcomes adversity to become a legend Basketball prodigy Jimmy “Kamikaze” Kirkus is destined for the NBA. But before he can sail off into a golden future, Jimmy must reckon with a tragic past and with a curse that has haunted his family for generations. His father had been a basketball great himself, but his dreams of stardom were traded in for a hasty marriage and parenthood. Born into a house haunted by wasted talent, alcoholism, and death, will Jimmy fall victim to the Kirkus Curse or break it once and for all? In the same vein as the wildly popular Friday Night Lights, Rules for Becoming a Legend uses sports as a lens through which to understand family, community, catastrophe, and hope. This spirit-igniting debut announces Lane as an extraordinary young writer to watch.
