In daytime driving, when the visibility of the road in clear weather is unobstructed, this is normally not a problem. However, when driving at night on dark roads with low beams, it is often quite difficult to see the direction the road is taking. Indeed, drivers state that poor road guidance is their main problem in night driving. To overcome this problem, roads are fitted with retroreflective pavement markings, which are visible in night driving. This study was conducted to review the role, effects, and functioning of lane marking in night driving. The report consists of five sections. Section 1 details the scope and the limitations of this report. Section 2 presents a discussion of drivers’ needs for road guidance by means of pavement markers in general and lane markings in particular. Section 3 reviews the voluminous previous research on lane markings, focusing primarily on visibility and photometric characteristics of lane markings in night driving. Section 4 provides a summary of the issues related to lane markings. Section 5 presents the general conclusions and proposals for research topics and technical developments. The overall conclusion is that while drivers need both long-range guidance (a preview time of at least 5 s) and short-range guidance (a preview time of up to 3 s), present pavement markings often offer only short-range road guidance, especially in wet road conditions. Despite the extensive past research on pavement markings, many general and specificquestions remain to be answered.

Book excerpt: Vehicle, road, sign, and signal lighting are provided to enable drivers to reach their destinations quickly and safely. However, the attention given to how these forms of lighting function is likely to change as new technology is introduced and understanding of ergonomics and human factors improves. Lighting for Driving: Roads, Vehicle, Signs and Signals, Second Edition shows the crucial role lighting plays in road safety and examines how it could be used more effectively. With light-emitting diodes (LEDs) becoming the lighting source of choice for transport planners and vehicle designers, this book integrates information on road lighting, vehicle lighting, signs, and signals in one handy volume. International in scope and updated for this new edition, this book features lighting examples from the USA, the UK, France, Germany, The Netherlands, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland, Japan, Australia, and New Zealand. Lighting in common vehicle types including cars, vans, trucks, and motorcycles is covered as well as the visibility of pedestrians and cyclists to drivers. Coverage extends to road lighting, traffic markings, vehicle designs, and internal lighting and weather conditions. Now fully updated, a final chapter looks at the future of lighting in relation to driving. The book will help the reader to understand how lighting systems on roads and vehicles work by explaining the thinking and scientific reasoning behind various forms of lighting and analyzing their contribution to the driver’s understanding of real and potential road hazards. This book will be an ideal read for ergonomists and engineers engaged in transport and road engineering, transport planners, civil engineers, vehicle designers, and electrical engineers.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this research was to determine the safety, motorist opinion, and cost-effectiveness of pavement marking materials used by the Virginia Department of Transportation and to develop guidelines, where possible, as to when each type of material should be used. Interstate and primary road segments that had been remarked with a different type of pavement marking material were identified to perform a before-and-after accident analysis. When possible, segments that were remarked using the same pavement marking material were included to provide comparison sections. The number of sites and accident count data were insufficient to support a finding that the use of a particular pavement marking material reduces the number of target accidents. The results of a motorist survey indicated that the participating drivers were more satisfied with pavement markings with higher retroreflectivity values than those with lower values. Participating drivers over the age of 65 were generally less satisfied with the brightness of the pavement markings than were participating drivers under the age of 65. Using a large contract for paint was the most cost-effective for two-lane roads under most volume conditions and four- and six-lane low-volume roads. Using polyurea and a large contract for paint were the most cost-effective for high-volume two- and four-lane roads. Polyurea and waffle tape were the more cost-effective durable markings for high-volume six-lane roads. Changes in the use of pavement markings were recommended. Specifically, the Virginia Department of Transportation should (1) consider increasing the use of large paint contracts and minimizing its use of small paint contracts when possible; (2) consider a performance-based specification for durable markings; (3) continue consideration of a holistic approach for pavement management and markings, and (4) re-evaluate its pavement marking policy and include the recommendations of this study.

Markings in good condition typically provide adequate delineation under dry nighttime conditions, but performance is generally reduced in wet-night conditions. Wet reflective pavement markings can provide improved visibility in wet-night conditions. This research project identifies continuous wet retroreflectivity levels to include in Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) standards based on a comprehensive review of past research, an analysis of available data sources, and a human factors study. The human factors study included 43 participants who evaluate the visual performance of pavement markings with varying levels of retroreflectivity, color, and width in a simulated rain condition. The results indicate that a minimum maintained continuous wet retroreflectivity level of 50 millicandelas per meter squared per lux (mcd/m2/lux) will provide adequate visibility to most drivers. A new install value of 200 mcd/m2/lux is recommended. The new install value is based on anticipated continuous wet retroreflectivity degradation using literature and MnDOT-supplied continuous wet retroreflectivity degradation levels, a desired four-year service life, and the recommended minimum maintained value. These recommendations are not marking width or color dependent..
