Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New technological innovations and advances in research in areas such as spectroscopy, computer tomography, signal processing, and data analysis require a deep understanding of function approximation using Fourier methods. To address this growing need, this monograph combines mathematical theory and numerical algorithms to offer a unified and self-contained presentation of Fourier analysis. The first four chapters of the text serve as an introduction to classical Fourier analysis in the univariate and multivariate cases, including the discrete Fourier transforms, providing the necessary background for all further chapters. Next, chapters explore the construction and analysis of corresponding fast algorithms in the one- and multidimensional cases. The well-known fast Fourier transforms (FFTs) are discussed, as well as recent results on the construction of the nonequispaced FFTs, high-dimensional FFTs on special lattices, and sparse FFTs. An additional chapter is devoted to discrete trigonometric transforms and Chebyshev expansions. The final two chapters consider various applications of numerical Fourier methods for improved function approximation, including Prony methods for the recovery of structured functions. This new edition has been revised and updated throughout, featuring new material on a new Fourier approach to the ANOVA decomposition of high-dimensional trigonometric polynomials; new research results on the approximation errors of the nonequispaced fast Fourier transform based on special window functions; and the recently developed ESPIRA algorithm for recovery of exponential sums, among others. Numerical Fourier Analysis will be of interest to graduate students and researchers in applied mathematics, physics, computer science, engineering, and other areas where Fourier methods play an important role in applications.

Book excerpt: The contributions contained in the volume, written by leading experts in their respective fields, are expanded versions of talks given at the INDAM Workshop "Anomalies in Partial Differential Equations" held in September 2019 at the Istituto Nazionale di Alta Matematica, Dipartimento di Matematica "Guido Castelnuovo", Università di Roma "La Sapienza". The volume contains results for well-posedness and local solvability for linear models with low regular coefficients. Moreover, nonlinear dispersive models (damped waves, p-evolution models) are discussed from the point of view of critical exponents, blow-up phenomena or decay estimates for Sobolev solutions. Some contributions are devoted to models from applications as traffic flows, Einstein-Euler systems or stochastic PDEs as well. Finally, several contributions from Harmonic and Time-Frequency Analysis, in which the authors are interested in the action of localizing operators or the description of wave front sets, complete the volume.

Book excerpt: This book includes the texts of the survey lectures given by plenary speakers at the 11th International ISAAC Congress held in Växjö, Sweden, on 14-18 August, 2017. It is the purpose of ISAAC to promote analysis, its applications, and its interaction with computation. Analysis is understood here in the broad sense of the word, including differential equations, integral equations, functional analysis, and function theory. With this objective, ISAAC organizes international Congresses for the presentation and discussion of research on analysis. The plenary lectures in the present volume, authored by eminent specialists, are devoted to some exciting recent developments, topics including: local solvability for subprincipal type operators; fractional-order Laplacians; degenerate complex vector fields in the plane; lower bounds for pseudo-differential operators; a survey on Morrey spaces; localization operators in Signal Theory and Quantum Mechanics. Thanks to the accessible style used, readers only need a basic command of Calculus. This book will appeal to scientists, teachers, and graduate students in Mathematics, in particular Mathematical Analysis, Probability and Statistics, Numerical Analysis and Mathematical Physics.

Book excerpt: Mood disorders, such as depression and bipolar disorder, are a global public health problem because of their high prevalence, chronicity, and recurrence throughout the lifespan as well as increased risk of mortality. These disorders are often associated with anatomical and functional brain alterations. In the last few decades, brain imaging research has made it possible to investigate these alternations in patients with neuropsychiatric illnesses. In particular, novel neuroimaging methods (e.g., structural/functional magnetic resonance imaging), have allowed researchers to further understand both anatomical and functional deficits in patients with mood disorders.

Book excerpt: The present volume of Time and Science series is devoted to Physical Sciences and Cosmology. Today more than ever, the question 'is Time an ontological property, a necessary ingredient for the physical description of the world, or a purely epistemological element, relative to our situation in the world?' worry physicists and cosmologists alike. For many of them, Relativity (and particularly General Relativity), as well as its reconciliation with quantum mechanics in the elaboration of a quantum theory of gravitation, points to a negative answer to the first alternative, and leads them to deny the objective reality of time. For others, the answer is nuanced by the evidence of an emerging temporal property when one climbs the scales of the complexity of systems and/or the applicability of the statistical laws of thermodynamics. But for some, the illusion of the unreality of time comes from certain confusions that they denounce, and plead for the re-establishment of time at the heart of physical theories.
