Book excerpt: How American bicyclists shaped the landscape and left traces of their journeys for us in writing, illustrations, and photographs. In the later part of the nineteenth century, American bicyclists were explorers, cycling through both charted and uncharted territory. These wheelmen and wheelwomen became keen observers of suburban and rural landscapes, and left copious records of their journeys—in travel narratives, journalism, maps, photographs, illustrations. They were also instrumental in the construction of roads and paths (“wheelways”)—building them, funding them, and lobbying legislators for them. Their explorations shaped the landscape and the way we look at it, yet with few exceptions their writings have been largely overlooked by landscape scholars, and many of the paths cyclists cleared have disappeared. In Old Wheelways, Robert McCullough restores the pioneering cyclists of the nineteenth century to the history of American landscapes. McCullough recounts marathon cycling trips around the Northeast undertaken by hardy cyclists, who then describe their journeys in such magazines as The Wheelman Illustrated and Bicycling World; the work of illustrators (including Childe Hassam, before his fame as a painter); efforts by cyclists to build better rural roads and bicycle paths; and conflicts with park planners, including the famous Olmsted Firm, who often opposed separate paths for bicycles. Today's ubiquitous bicycle lanes owe their origins to nineteenth century versions, including New York City's “asphalt ribbons.” Long before there were “rails to trails,” there was a movement to adapt existing passageways—including aqueduct corridors, trolley rights-of-way, and canal towpaths—for bicycling. The campaigns for wheelways, McCullough points out, offer a prologue to nearly every obstacle faced by those advocating bicycle paths and lanes today. McCullough's text is enriched by more than one hundred historic images of cyclists (often attired in skirts and bonnets, suits and ties), country lanes, and city streets.

Book excerpt: Cycling: A Sociology of Vélomobility explores cycling as a sociological phenomenon. Drawing on extensive ethnographic fieldwork, it considers the interaction of materials, competencies and meanings that comprise a variety of cycling practices. What might appear at first to be self-evident actions are shown to be constructed through the interplay of numerous social and political forces. Using a theoretical framework from mobilities studies, its central themes respond to the question of what it is about cycling that provokes so much interest and passion, both positive and negative. Individual chapters consider how cycling has appeared as theme and illustration in social theory, as well as the legacies of these theorizations. The book expands on the image of cycling practices as the product of an assemblage of technology, rider and environment. Riding spaces as material technologies are found to be as important as the machinery of the cycle, and a distinction is made between routes and rides to help interpret aspects of journey-making. Ideas of both affordance and script are used to explore how elements interact in performance to create sensory and experiential scapes. Consideration is also given to the changing identities of cycling practices in historical and geographical perspective. The book adds to existing research by extending the theorization of cycling mobilities. It engages with both current and past debates on the place of cycling in mobility systems and the problems of researching, analyzing and communicating ephemeral mobile experiences.

Even in an automobile dependent nation like the United States, bicycle commuting has become a growing trend within dense urban cities. Many have experienced the benefits of cycling in terms of how it has the ability to impact the larger environment, urban infrastructure, and promote personal health. Those who cycle know the bicycle is a viable mode of transportation, but the notion is not self-evident. Many are unaware of the bicycle as a utilitarian and cultural object. Cycle-graphic landscapes addresses this problem within Honolulu, Hawaii. The city of Honolulu is improving the capacity of its current cycling infrastructure, but has had difficulty generating higher participation rates. The encouragement of bicycle use in Honolulu needs to be made accessible physically and visually to the general public, which requires reinforcement by spatial means. This thesis shows how an architectural intervention can create an identity for the emerging Honolulu cycling system as a catalyst to generate visible bicycle culture. Cycle-graphic landscapes is a critique of Honolulu's response to urban density and alternative forms of transportation. In the face of rising urban density, Honolulu needs to reevaluate its approach towards urban infrastructure. With Honolulu's limited choices of existing transportation modes, the interjection of new modes are unavoidable, and certainly warranted. By leveraging the benefits of the developing light-rail transit and the proposed bicycle system, cycling can become more accessible, physically and visually, to residents of Oahu. Aimed at those who have not yet adopted cycling, for transportation and pleasure, the visual experience of the Cycle-graphic station showcases the act of cycling as an art and attempts to convey confidence in the equality of cyclist and motorist, the assurance that access is continuous and safe, and to promote the coolness and fun of cycling.

Book excerpt: When presented with routing options, bicyclists often make their choice based on a route's scenic and aesthetic qualities. Cross-state bicycle tours are typically promoted by showcasing these qualities of the state. This study analyzes bicyclists' preferences and perceptions of natural and cultural characteristics and features that are preferred in the Iowa landscape. This study also establishes the importance of using not just vision, but also smell, sound, touch, and taste to perceive the experience of biking throughout the state. A review of literature assessing scenic aspects of roadways and landscapes revealed that this literature does not specify characteristics that are preferred by bicyclists, nor does the literature explore cycling as a multi-sensory experience. In order to determine which characteristics bicyclists prefer in the Iowa landscape and how they use their senses, focus group research was conducted.

The book is significant in that it is among the first studies to explore the concept of journey experiences and to develop an interdisciplinary theoretical foundation of mobility spaces. It offers a comprehensive understanding and a benchmarking of the features of motorcycling and cycling journey experiences, a deeper market knowledge on motorcycling and cycling tourists, and a set of tools, techniques, and recommendations for future research on tourist experiences.
