Book excerpt: Acoustic Landmine Detection (ALD) using a laser vibrometry was studied using two acoustic ground excitation methods: acoustic (loudspeaker) excitation (AE) and laser excitation (LE). AE is suitable for detecting buried landmines but is a slow technique. A faster AE method based on a CMOS camera was proposed but not studied further. LE is potentially a faster technique but suffers from surface effects. An important surface effect is the relaxation of the surface after the disturbance by the laser excitation pulse. This relaxation lasts for more than 4 ms in the vicinity of the laser-excitation spot. Due to these surface effects, LE does not seem to be a viable technique in combination with laser vibrometry.

The ability to detect landmines in their host environment at a distance and to discriminate them from other objects would be valuable for countering the landmine threat. This paper explores a standoff acoustic/laser technique to discriminate landmines from other forms of man-made objects (clutter) in an urban environment. A novel approach currently under investigation by MIT Lincoln Labs, University of Mississippi, and other groups employs a non-contact acoustic/laser technique to detect landmines from a safe standoff range. This technique uses a sound source to excite vibrations in targets with an acoustic wave. These vibrations are in turn measured remotely with a Laser Doppler Vibrometer (LDV). In this thesis, the vibration responses of landmine variants are measured, analyzed, and compared to those of common urban objects likely to be found on a landmine field or roadside. The Fourier Transform of the vibration of the target as measured by the LDV is used to generate a target vibration spectrum. Target vibration spectra in response to a sound source were experimentally measured for 59 trials, 28 of which were of simulated landmine variants and the remaining trials were of urban clutter objects. Using an algorithm adapted from a methodology for mass spectral analysis, parameters of the target signatures are estimated; then individual target signatures are classified using a Support Vector Machine (SVM) with a training set composed of parameters from the remaining members of the total population. The best results obtained from this methodology had a 71% probability of detection and a 3% false alarm rate corresponding to 20 of 28 of the simulated landmine variants correctly identified and a single clutter object misidentified as a landmine variant.

Book excerpt: The phenomenon of the acoustic-to-seismic (A/S) coupling of airborne sound into the ground for buried anti-personnel and anti-tank landmine detection is well established [J.M. Sabatier and N. Xiang, IEEE Trans. on Geoscience & Remote Sensing, 39, pp 1146-1154 (2001); N. Xiang and J.M. Sabatier, J. Acoust. Soc. Am, 113, pp. 1333-1341 (2003)]. A sound source is used to insonify the ground surface. The airborne sound couples into the soil and excites the vibrational energy of the soil matrix. An anomaly in the vibrational energy occurs on the ground surface in a region very near a buried landmine. This anomaly can be detected with a vibration sensor. This paper will discuss vibration sensors that are currently being used to measure the vibrations due to the presence of a buried landmine. These instruments include a geophone, laser, ultrasonic and radar Doppler vibrometers, and a whole field optical sensor. The detection ability of fused sensors comprised of the A/S laser Doppler vibrometer based sensor and a ground penetrating synthetic aperture radar is also being investigated. Researchers at the University of Mississippi, Planning Systems Incorporated, and MetroLaser, Inc. are investigating all of the vibration sensors described above. This paper will present results of this research.

Book excerpt: The Office of Naval Research issued Grant N00014-02-1-0346 for Optical Measurements of Ground Vibrations to the National Center for Physical Acoustics at the University of Mississippi. The University of Mississippi is involved in an applied research program to develop an acoustic technique to detect buried landmines. In this technique, the ground is excited using acoustic or seismic sources which elicit resonance in buried mines. This resonance causes increased amplitude in the ground vibration over the buried object. The primary methods of measuring ground vibration involve laser Doppler vibrometry and tend to limit operational tempo due to long scanning times and be adversely affected by loose ground cover. Research has been performed to develop a Doppler acoustic technique for the measurement of ground vibration. Initial laboratory and field tests indicate this device has significant promise for overcoming the current limitations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The SEM Handbook of Experimental Structural Dynamics stands as a comprehensive overview and reference for its subject, applicable to workers in research, product design and manufacture, and practice. The Handbook is devoted primarily to the areas of structural mechanics served by the Society for Experimental Mechanics IMAC community, such as modal analysis, rotating machinery, structural health monitoring, shock and vibration, sensors and instrumentation, aeroelasticity, ground testing, finite element techniques, model updating, sensitivity analysis, verification and validation, experimental dynamics sub-structuring, quantification of margin and uncertainty, and testing of civil infrastructure. Chapters offer comprehensive, detailed coverage of decades of scientific and technologic advance and all demonstrate an experimental perspective. Several sections specifically discuss the various types of experimental testing and common practices utilized in the automotive, aerospace, and civil structures industries. · History of Experimental Structural Mechanics · DIC Methods - Dynamic Photogrammetry · LDV Methods · Applied Digital Signal Processing · Introduction to Spectral - Basic Measurements · Structural Measurements - FRF · Random and Shock Testing · Rotating System Analysis Methods · Sensors Signal Conditioning Instrumentation · Design of Modal Tests · Experimental Modal Methods · Experimental Modal Parameter Evaluation · Operating Modal Analysis Methods · Analytical Numerical Substructuring · Finite Element Model Correlation · Model Updating · Damping of Materials and Structures · Model Calibration and Validation in Structures · Uncertainty Quantification: UQ, QMU and Statistics · Nonlinear System Analysis Methods (Experimental) · Structural Health Monitoring and Damage Detection · Experimental Substructure Modeling · Modal Modeling · Response (Impedance) Modeling · Nonlinear Normal Mode Analysis Techniques (Analytical) · Modal Modeling with Nonlinear Connection Elements (Analytical) · Acoustics of Structural Systems (VibroAcoustics) · Automotive Structural Testing · Civil Structural Testing · Aerospace Perspective for Modeling and Validation · Sports Equipment Testing · Applied Math for Experimental Structural Mechanics Contributions present important theory behind relevant experimental methods as well as application and technology. Topical authors emphasize and dissect proven methods and offer detail beyond a simple review of the literature. Additionally, chapters cover practical needs of scientists and engineers who are new to the field. In most cases, neither the pertinent theory nor, in particular, the practical issues have been presented formally in current academic textbooks. Each chapter in the Handbook represents a ’must read’ for someone new to the subject or for someone returning to the field after an absence. Reference lists in each chapter consist of the seminal papers in the literature. This Handbook stands in parallel to the SEM Handbook of Experimental Solid Mechanics, where this Handbook focuses on experimental dynamics of structures at a macro-scale often involving multiple components and materials where the SEM Handbook of Experimental Solid Mechanics focuses on experimental mechanics of materials at a nano-scale and/or micro-scale.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Acoustic-to-seismic (A/S) coupling involving airborne sound is used to generate soil vibrations that interact with the top plate of a buried landmine. Due to scattering, the interaction at the soil-mine interface produces an enhanced and strongly nonlinear soil surface vibration directly over the buried landmine. Resonant tuning curves of the soil-mine system show that the nonlinear behavior observed near resonance for "on the mine" locations is considerably stronger that that seen "off the mine." This suggests that some false alarms due to the resonant effects of the ground's natural layering may be eliminated by comparing the frequency softening in resonant tuning curves between "off" and "on target" locations. Experiments with the soil-mass oscillator (SMO) apparatus show that the nonlinear acoustic landmine detection problem involves mesoscopic nanoscale nonlinear elastic behavior. Resonant tuning curves have linear backbones, a behavior also characteristic of certain geomaterials (sandstone). Elasto-slip (Iwan 1966) and LISA (Scalerandi et al 2002) models of hysteresis are used to explain this phenomenon. The soil-mine interface, which is modeled using a soil-plate oscillator (SPO) apparatus, is extremely nonlinear. The SPO is excited using both acoustic and electromagnetic means. A/S coupling experiments are employed to simultaneously measure vibrations at the underside of a buried clamped plate and the soil surface. Electrodynamic experiments determine the motional impedance of a combined soil-plate system. At large drive amplitudes, the backbone curves obtained from the SPO exhibit more complicated behavior, which is described using a bilinear hysteresis model (Caughey 1966). Nonlinear acoustic landmine detection experiments are performed in the anechoic chamber facility using both a buried acrylic drum-like mine simulant and a VS 1.6 plastic anti-tank landmine. Using an automated laser Doppler vibrometer, soil surface vibraions are profiled as a function of scan position. Elements of both the elasto-slip and bilinear hysteresis models appear in these experiments.

These include developments in explosive materials, sensors, control systems, robotics, satellite systems, and computing power, to name just a few. Such technologies have not only enhanced the capabilities of U.S. military forces, but also offer enhanced offensive capabilities to potential adversaries - either directly through the development of more sophisticated weapons, or more indirectly through opportunities for interrupting the function of defensive U.S. military systems. Passive and active electro-optical (EO) sensing technologies are prime examples. Laser Radar considers the potential of active EO technologies to create surprise; i.e., systems that use a source of visible or infrared light to interrogate a target in combination with sensitive detectors and processors to analyze the returned light. The addition of an interrogating light source to the system adds rich new phenomenologies that enable new capabilities to be explored. This report evaluates the fundamental, physical limits to active EO sensor technologies with potential military utility; identifies key technologies that may help overcome the impediments within a 5-10 year timeframe; considers the pros and cons of implementing each existing or emerging technology; and evaluates the potential uses of active EO sensing technologies, including 3D mapping and multi-discriminate laser radar technologies.

Book excerpt: This multi-contributed volume provides a practical, applications-focused introduction to nonlinear acoustical techniques for nondestructive evaluation. Compared to linear techniques, nonlinear acoustical/ultrasonic techniques are much more sensitive to micro-cracks and other types of small distributed damages. Most materials and structures exhibit nonlinear behavior due to the formation of dislocation and micro-cracks from fatigue or other types of repetitive loadings well before detectable macro-cracks are formed. Nondestructive evaluation (NDE) tools that have been developed based on nonlinear acoustical techniques are capable of providing early warnings about the possibility of structural failure before detectable macro-cracks are formed. This book presents the full range of nonlinear acoustical techniques used today for NDE. The expert chapters cover both theoretical and experimental aspects, but always with an eye towards applications. Unlike other titles currently available, which treat nonlinearity as a physics problem and focus on different analytical derivations, the present volume emphasizes NDE applications over detailed analytical derivations. The introductory chapter presents the fundamentals in a manner accessible to anyone with an undergraduate degree in Engineering or Physics and equips the reader with all of the necessary background to understand the remaining chapters. This self-contained volume will be a valuable reference to graduate students through practising researchers in Engineering, Materials Science, and Physics. Represents the first book on nonlinear acoustical techniques for NDE applications Emphasizes applications of nonlinear acoustical techniques Presents the fundamental physics and mathematics behind nonlinear acoustical phenomenon in a simple, easily understood manner Covers a variety of popular NDE techniques based on nonlinear acoustics in a single volume

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1989 the time was hot to create a workshop series dedicated to the dicussion of the latest results in the automatic processing of fringe patterns. This idea was promoted by the insight that automatic and high precision phase measurement techniques will play a key role in all future industrial applications of optical metrology. However, such a workshop must take place in a dynamic environment. The- fore the main topics of the previous events were always adapted to the most interesting subjects of the new period. In 1993 new prin- ples of optical shape measurement, setup calibration, phase unwr- ping and nondestructive testing were the focus of discussion, while in 1997 new approaches in multi-sensor metrology, active measu- ment strategies and hybrid processing technologies played a central role. 2001, the first meeting in the 21st century, was dedicated to - tical methods for micromeasurements, hybrid measurement te- nologies and new sensor solutions for industrial inspection. The fifth workshop takes place in Stuttgart, the capital of the state of Baden- Württemberg and the centre of a region with a long and remarkable tradition in engineering. Thus after Berlin 1989, Bremen 1993, 1997 and 2001, Stuttgart is the third Fringe city where international - perts will meet each other to share new ideas and concepts in optical metrology. This volume contains the papers presented during FRINGE 2005.
