In Landing on the Right Side of Your Ass, Michael B. Laskoff--a Harvard M.B.A. who has flown high and flamed out more than once--offers essential advice for those of us who have recently been laid off, restructured, or plain ol' fired. He's been through the job-loss/job-search drill more than once, and since he consistently has gone on to do better in terms of compensation, responsibility, and job satisfaction, he's the perfect ex-employee to share with you some hard-won wisdom, such as: -How long to wait before launching yourself into the job arena-How to channel anger, fear, and revenge fantasies into useful job-search tactics-How to snag recommendations (and compensation) from ex-bosses-How to determine your interviewers' hiring problems and then present yourself as the solutionWhether you're concerned about the emotional issues of unemployment (from denial and depression to anger and acceptance) or are looking for invaluable nuts-and-bolts advice (what to say about your ex-employer in an interview, how to handle financial issues, and what on earth you should do with all that free time between jobs), Landing on the Right Side of Your Ass is a straight-up, no-chaser survival guide for picking yourself up, getting back out there again, and winding up with a job that's better than the one you lost.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When I was young, like so many other young men of my generation, I gave our country what we thought was our obligation to our country. Like the generation of our fathers and the generation that came after us. I never minded a persons belief in being against the war in Vietnam. But they forgot that the ones that served were good people too. They found us in contempt. But they were wrong. We did what this generation is doing in Iraq and Afghanistan. There is no difference. Things have changed over the years and people now thank us for our service as they do the new generation. That is nice, and should be said. The misnomer that we lost the war is not accurate. We won every major battle in Vietnam we fought. Often times out-numbered. The Communists only fought major battles when they had the advantage. The Tet offensive of 1968 hurt them severely, completely wiping out the V.C. Army and making the N.V.A. Army rebuild. If North Vietnam would have honored the peace treaty, it would have been like the Korean War with the south and the north. America did not though support South Vietnam after our troops moved out. Congress did not appropriate funds to the South Vietnamese government. But I think our country could no longer fund in money and lives. It always would come down to that. Stats of Marines in Vietnam: 26% casualty rate. Highest of any combat group in South Vietnam.

The novel unfolds in one day’s action as viewed through the eyes of Elmer Blizzard, a troubled ex-deputy; Mrs. McNulty, a lonely widow who refuses to leave her doomed shack by the river; her loyal, aging dog, Percy; and a rapacious politician, State Senator Aubrey Terrell, for whom the new lake is named. A story of land grabs, loss, wounded families, bitterness, hypocrisy, violence and revenge in the changing South, Fall Line is populated by complex characters who want to do the right thing but don’t know how. Joe Samuel Starnes’s novel is a memorable, beautiful, and heartbreaking tale of a backwater hamlet’s damaged people and its transformed landscape.

Book excerpt: Book two of Country Roads Jonah Alcott found his true calling as the PR director of Hawkins Hardwood. He's a master of mediation, but the Black Cherry Canyon project has pushed him to his limit—beautiful but obstinate park manager Zury Castellano crossed a line when she enlisted the help of known eco-terrorists to protect "her" land. For Zury, the unspoiled, scenic Black Cherry Falls State Park is more than a job—it's the only place she's ever considered home. And she'll stop at nothing to ensure Hawkins Hardwood doesn't touch a single twig in it, even if that means agreeing to spend the weekend with corporate drone Jonah. He might think they're working toward a compromise, but Zury has no intention of backing down. Infuriating but irresistible, Zury teaches Jonah that the beauty of the mountains can't be bought. But Jonah will need to prove he's on her side—in life and in love—and show her who the real bad guys are, before it's too late… 63,000 words

Book excerpt: Lurps is the revised edition of the memoir of a juvenile delinquent who drops out of ninth grade to chase his dream of military service. After volunteering for Vietnam, he joins the elite U.S. Army LRRP/Rangers—small, heavily armed long-range reconnaissance teams that patrol deep in enemy-held territory. It is 1968, and the Lurps find themselves in some of the war's hairiest campaigns and battles, including Tet, Khe Sanh, and A Shau. Readers witness all the horrors, humor, adrenaline, and unexpected beauty through the eyes of a green young warrior. Gone are the heroic clichZs and bravado as compelling narrative and realistic dialogue sweep the reader along with a powerful sense that this is actually happening. This poignant coming-of-age story explores the social background that shaped the protagonist's thinking, his uncertain quest for redemption through increased responsibility, the brotherhood of comrades in arms, women and sexual awakening, and the baffling randomness of who lives and who dies.
