Book excerpt: Excerpt from Landholding in England, Considered in Relation to Poverty My object in writing this sketch of the history of land in England is to give the general reader some account of the most salient features of landholding in the past, and of the causes which have made it what it is at present; and in doing this, I have tried to show the connection between our land system and poverty. Poverty has a very sharply-defined history, and that history runs parallel with the history of land. The depopulation of country districts is no accident, it is the direct and inevitable consequence of the disappearance of small holdings. We cannot understand the present without knowing something of the past. The history of the past often reveals to us that the evils of the present are not caused by the inevitable laws of nature, but by interference with those laws, and should not therefore be regarded as inevitable. Our land system is too often regarded as, on the one hand, of so reverend an antiquity that to touch it is to break with all the traditions of Englishmen, and on the other, as so great an improvement, in a democratic direction, on the system of the past, that we cannot materially improve it. But the change has been, not towards democracy, but towards more unlimited private ownership - a very different thing. My first intention was merely to mention in passing some of the ancient statutes relating to land, but I found that some further account of them was absolutely necessary. I should, however, have been afraid to venture on this, but for the assistance given me by Mr Richard Brown of Whitley Bay, Northumberland, who has most kindly helped me both with his knowledge of the subject and his criticism of the chapters dealing with the transfer of land after the passing of Quia Emptores. A portion of the matter of this book appeared, in a greatly abbreviated form, in the New Age of 1906. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Rise and Progress of Poverty in England, From the Norman Conquest to Modern Times: Extracted From Various Histories and Condensed By this Manorial or feudal system the people were in 'a great measure tied to their village homes, as they had no choice but to live where they were born, and to serve the master upon whose Manor they lived. SO long as they stayed in their native village they must serve their lord, in tilling his ground or looking after his cattle. For this they were paid no wages, but they had their cottages and the free use Of strips Of land to sow or plant for themselves. The land that was held by each man was not all in one place, but scattered amongst the strips that were held by his fellow villagers. They could not sell their land, nor leave the Manor without their lord's permission. In fact they could not give thelr daughters in marriage or sell an ox without consulting their masters. And yet they were not slaves, for slavery and serfdom had almost disappeared. Every few months they gathered together in the Manor Court and took part in the election Of the petty Manorial Officers, the Reeve, the Reaper, the Ale Taster, and others. At these Manor Courts, presided over by the Steward of the Manor, disputes as to the possession Of land, or inheritance, were decided, oftentimes by a jury Of the villagers. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Reform of the English Land System IN discussing the Reform of the English Land System, we have to consider how far it may be expedient to modify that System, either in the special interest of agriculture, or in the general interest of social and political well-being. But we cannot hope to form a just conception of the English Land System as it ought to be, without having a practical knowledge of the English Land System as it is that is, of those distinctive and typical features which characterise it among the Land Systems of the world. Such a study is especially interesting at the present moment, when the Irish Land System has just been subjected to radical changes, and when the English Land System itself has been placed on its trial, not only by the progress of democratic ideas, but also by the inevitable effect of agricultural depression, the severest and the most prolonged which has occurred within living memory. Book excerpt: Excerpt from English Land and English Landlords: An Enquiry Into the Origin and Character of the English Land System, With Proposals for Its Reform; With in Index The present volume treats of the historical growth, the distinctive features, and the prospective development, of the English Land System. It does not purport to deal with the Scotch or Irish land systems, in so far as they differ from the English, except where these differences may be significant, for purposes of illustration. Nor does it purport to describe fully the land systems of foreign countries, though I have thought it well to introduce a concise review of the more important among these, in order to exhibit in stronger relief the unique character of the agrarian constitution established in England by the joint operation of Law and Custom. The peculiar essence of that constitution is to be found in the marked separation of the agricultural community into three classes - landlords, farmers, and labourers. Of these classes, the first is at once the most powerful, and the most typical product of the English Land System. I have, therefore, associated "English Land" with "English Landlords," in the title of a work chiefly designed to set forth the reciprocal influence of social and agricultural relations in the past, the present, and the future. Book excerpt: Excerpt from In Darkest England, and the Way Out When but a mere child the degradation and helpless misery of the poor Stockingers of my native town, wandering gaunt and hunger-stricken through the streets droning out their melancholy ditties, crowding the Union or toiling like galley slaves on relief works for a bare subsistence, kindled in my heart yearnings to help the poor which have continued to this day and which have had a powerful influence on my whole life. At last I may be going to see my longings to help the workless realised. I think I am. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
